A CONCERT to raise funds for Victim Support Lancashire was hailed a success by organisers despite a poor turnout. Julie Young, chief executive of
the charity, said: “Despite the poor turnout because of the bad weath er, a brilliant time was had by all and we will have raised £500 wlien all the donations are collected.” Held at St Michael and St
John’s Social Centre, Lowergate, Clitheroe, The Backbeats provid ed music at the concert, which was attended by around 80 people. The
money raised will be used to fund the charity’s on-going running costs, which include the cost of recruiting, training and supervis ing Victim Support Lancashire’s army of volunteers who support the victims of crime and witnesses attending court. Mrs Young said; “Many people
don’t realise we arc a charity and that it costs £350,000 a year to maintain the level of support we offer.” She added this meant the chari ty relied heavily on grants and

donations, which made fund-rais ers such as the one just held vital for the charity’s survival. To support the charity or to
make a donation contact Mrs Young on 01772 828422 or email areaof fice@ victim support-

heard the overflow killed nearly all the life in a 700m stretch coating the stream bed with a grey sewage fungus. United Utilities, based in
Warrington, pleaded guilty to causing a discharge of sewage into the tributary of Pendleton Brook. It was fined £8,000 and ordered to pay £2,080 costs. Mrs Jane Morgan (pros
ecuting) for the Environ ment Agency, said the problem stemmed from a blocked pump at Fairfield Drive pumping station in Ciitheroe. As a result sewage had
backed up and escaped into the surface water sys

tem via a cross connection. Mrs Morgan said the com pany had not been aware of the problem until alert ed by an environmental officer and it was clear the pumping s ta tio n alarm system had failed. “Because the pumping
station was unmanned the company was dependant on having a robust alarm system,” said Mrs Morgan. “The presence of sewage fungus, which takes time to develop, indicates the problem had been going on for more than just the day it was discovered.” Mr Joseph H a rt, for
United Utilities, said the company took problems such as the one a t Clitheroe very seriously. "With a network of some
40,000 kilometres of pipes it is inevitable some prob lems will occur, but the company does everything

Mr H a r t said the con
nection between the foul and surface systems was a legacy of the 1970s when sewage had been the responsibility of the local authorities. He said like many others
the connection was not included in the maps and plans inherited by United Utilities when it took over from North West Water. He said as soon as the
leakage was reported the problem with the pumps was rectified, the alarm system failure analysed and corrected and a sec ondary alarm system installed and contractors had moved swiftly to clean up the affected brook. Mr H a r t said the con
nection had been sealed up so the overflow could not be repeated.

The rich, full life of ‘Baker Bob’
by Julie Magee
POPULAR local character Mr Robert Veevers, who loved to live life to the full, died peace fully on Thursday after a short illness. Born in May 1949, Mr Veevers
(pictured), who everyone knew as Bob, grew up in Shawbridge post office and bakehouse in Pendle Road, Clitheroe. It is now demolished and replaced by Pendle Court sheltered accommodation. He was the eldest son of
Mr and Mrs Ambrose and Ruth Veevers and attended Pendle Junior School before joining Ribblesdale High School. Born into a family of
bakers. Bob was always des tined to join the family firm and before he even left school was working in the family’s bakehouse. With the closure of the
post office, the bakehouse business moved to Market Place, Clitheroee after the family bought the estab lished Crabtree’s cafe, turn ing it into a bakery. Bob continued to work as
a baker for the next 40 years, not retiring until two years ago at the age of 55. At the bakery. Bob worked side
by side with his younger brother, Alfred, his parents and, in earlier days, his grandfather. ’The job called for long hours
with Bob getting up at 5 a.m. most mornings. During Easter, a period known

The Friends have also provided two new interactive white-

Children have been
invited to go into the Abbey Grounds on Wednesday when the Queen’s cousin, the Duke of Glou cester, will be visit ing.
£5K Group To raise approximate ly £5,000 to offset expenses occurred during the past few years at Whalley Methodist Church,
Joan Davies, a church official, came up with the idea of raising this money, calling the group 5K. “Many groups hire the church hall and we are sure we will be well support ed,” said Joan.
Each first Sunday in the month a lunch of soup and sweet will be served. On Satur day, March 24th,
Outside the bakery. Bob pursued
his love for sport and his passion for the United States of America, particularly New York, a city where Bob said he could easily live. Always keen to support sport at
grassroots level. Bob was treasurer for the Ribblesdale Table Tennis League, was a member of the
in the business as “hot cross bun time”. Bob would often have to work through the night. However, these demanding hours
did not detract from Bob’s love for the job. He particularly enjoyed baking
bread and making Russian cake. He also used to bake wedding and birthday cakes, which his father then used to ice.
White Lion pub’s cricket team and later was an umpire for Wadding- ton Cricket Club. He also played for several local pub pool teams and was a huge fan of boxing. Only last May, he travelled to
America to watch one of his local boxing heroes, Ricky Hatton, fight in Boston. Bob was also a lifelong Burnley
FC fan and could always be seen wearing the Clarets’ scarf and sweatshirts. Bob’s other passions
included music, his laid back manner reflected in his eclectic musical taste. His favourite artist was
Van Morrison, for whom he had “roadied” when he played in Clitheroe in the ’60s. He bought every one of his singles, regardless of their critical acclaim. A devoted family man.
Bob had two children, Ann and Martyn, with his first wife, Christine. Latterly marrying his long-term partner Cyn thia Procter, he gained three step-children, John, Katherine and Jeffrey. He also had eight grandchil dren. A private funeral for
family only will be held at Accrington Crematorium
tomorrow, followed by a “Service of Celebration” at Clitheroe Parish Church at 3-15 p.m. Everyone is then welcome at the New Inn in Clitheroe from 4 p.m. onwards. Any donations should be made
