IT seems strange watching panto a week before spring arrives, but it paid off for Read Amateur Theatrical Society in their depar ture from the traditional panto season last week. They put on a rollicking per
formance of “Treasure Island” which filled Read School Hall for three performances and made the hall’s timbers fairly shiver. Aye aye me hearties, it did. For this village group have
years of experience and know what their audiences want. Obvi ously it is traditional comedy, for the jokes flowed constantly and the landlubbers of Read and dis trict loved it. You had to be alert, however, or you would have missed a few. There was much banter from the pirates and cast who mastered the pirate tongue pretty well and the audience responded enthusiastically. The group did an excellent job
with the constraints of a school hall and a small stage. The light ing and effects were very good, but unless you were on the front row behind the children in the audience it wasn’t easy to see all the action on stage. Maybe this is why there was a lot of interaction with the audience. The chap sitting next to me

obviously wasn’t put off, howev er, because he laughed raucously and clapped enthusiastically from start to finish. It was that sort of show; there were a few for gotten lines.but the cast ad- libbed their way through them with a smile. Jeff Makinson as Aunt Sally Forth was e.xcellent. His over-the-top make-up and numerous colourful costumes, his perfect timing and ability to ad lib made him an e.\cellent dame. He ruled the stage and bubbled with confidence throughout.
Alongside him Alexander Bond was an extremely likeable Long John Silver who had obviously done his homework in “pirate speak” and it paid off. This panto told the story of
Long John Silver, captain of the Hispaniola, arriving at the Admiral Benbow Inn searching for a treasure map which the innkeeper. Aunt Sally, had hid den about her person. The hilar ious adventures began and con tinued until the final curtain. Other cast members were Paul Haworth as Jack, Sarah Howorth as Mary, Alec Slater as Jolly Roger, Sue Lightbown as Blind Pugh, Lewis Garforth as Squire Trelawney, Carol Makinson as Dr Livesey, Aman da Clews as Jim Hawkins, Katie Wlodarczyk as Israel Hands, John Bond as Ben Gunn, Clive Bennett as chief pirate, and

James Hobin, Bradley Robin son, Alice Vaughton and Ilona Worsley as the lost pirates. But possibly the star of the
show was young Matthew Turner as Spot the dog. He was absolutely superb, never forget ting to stay in character and did not need to utter a word to be so fun and likeable as he guarded his bone, frequently nipped peo ple’s shins and romped about the stage. Whoever did his cos tume and make-up, well done, it was “spot on”. I would have liked to have
heard a few more popular songs such as when the whole cast burst into a rendition of “Tarantara” from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “Pirates of Penzance” - great. I never thought I’d hear G & S at a panto, but what fun it was. And the junior chorus were

“IT’S not what you drive, but how you drive it,” is the message from BARSA - the Blackburn Area Road Safety Association. Set up more than 40 years ago with the
aim of promoting better and safer driving, BARSA is a non-profit organisation with many members across the Ribble Valley. It runs regular “Better Driving” courses,
which are open to all drivers and deliver practical, friendly advice on all levels, from making drivers more aware of hazards on the roads to teaching the defensive driving techniques advocated by the Police. The next Better Driving course starts on
Sunday, March 18th, at 10 a.m. on the Aldi car park opposite Blackburn Rovers FC, in Ewood, Blackburn. The six-week course individual member
