Racist abuse man had been drinking after wake

AN Asian woman sitting at a Clitheroe bus stop was subjected to racist abuse by a man who came out of a nearby takeaway. When a taxi driver remonstrated

with her abuser, he was pushed to the ground and kicked by the same man. Daniel Joseph Woodhead (33), of

Henthorn Road, Clitheroe, pleaded guilty to racially aggravated threat ening behaviour towards 31-year-old Miss AVaheeda Begum and to assaulting Mr Mohammed Rizwan

Khan. He was given a conditional discharge for two years and ordered to pay each of his victims £250 in compensation and £300 in court costs. Miss Catherine Allan (prosecut

ing), said Miss Begum was sitting at the bus stop at 11-20 p.m. waiting for a bus to Blackburn. There were two girls at the bus stop and Wood- head came over and started talking to them. “AWthout any warning he turned

to Miss Begum and called her a ‘black nigger’,” said Miss Allan.

“She hadn’t said anything to the defendant and was really shocked by his behaviour.” Miss Begum was so upset that she

walked away, intending to get a taxi home. One of the taxi drivers who witnessed the incident, Mr Khan, told Woodhead he wah out of order and the defendant asked what he was going to do about it. Mr Khan said he wasn’t going to

do anything and Woodhead then s ta r ted throwing punches and pushed him to the floor where he was kicked on the leg twice.

Mr David Leach (defending) said

on the day of the incident Wood- head had been to the funeral of a close friend and had drunk heavily at the wake. “He has little recollection of the

incident, but accepts the prosecu tion version of events,” said Mr Leach. “My client is full of remorse and

this is something that was complete ly and utterly out of character. “He has many friends and work

colleagues who are from the Asian community and he is not a racist.”

MOTORISTS are being urged to be extra considerate when parking in Chatburn. . Due to building work at Chatburn Prima

(ECSO) Karl Elliott, of Clitheroe Police, is urging drivers not to cause parking chaos when dropping children off at school, but to park wisely. He said: “The situation is worse between

8-45 and 9-15 a.m. and 3-15 and 3-45 p.m. when parents are dropping their children off at school. “There have been complaints from local

residents about the manner in which motorists are leaving their cars outside homes. Be considerate when parking.”
