Bruising clash hurts the Blues
Warrington Town . . .1 ClUheroe .................. 1
Simon Garner By ADRIAN CAPSTICK
SIMON Garner, Gregg Anderson and Ryan Fisher have all agreed new terms to stay at Ciitheroe Football Club for at least another season. After Bradford Park Avenue came
in with a "substantial financial deal" for captain Garner last week which the defender turned down, co-man ager Neil Reynolds is pleased to announce that "the number one left- back in the league" has committed to the Blues. Anderson has also extended his
current deal by two years and Ryan Fisher has agreed to a one-year con tract, with two more players set to follow suit. The Blues boss and fellow manag
er Pete Smith are intent on keeping together what looks to be the start of a winning formula, and the fact that Garner has now had three clubs express an Interest in him this season suggests there is something worth staying for at Shawbridge. Reynolds said: "Bradford made
Simon a fantastic financial offer that Ciitheroe couldn't begin to compete with, but it's not about money, the lads enjoy playing together and take great pride in pulling on a blue shirt. "Simon is the best left back in the
entire UniBond First Division, he's my captain and I'm sure he would not look out of place at Conference level.
"He took a week off work and
trained with Southport last week, and acquitted himself \yell, and if a club like that came in for him then I wouldn't stand in his way." He added: "There were several
scouts at Tuesday's game and we don't want any of our players to go anywhere. We're not the best finan cially rewarding club but we aim to make strides forward." This news comes after a 5-1 win
over Kidsgrove Athletic on Satur day and a bruising 1-1 draw at War rington Town on Tuesday that left Reynolds fuming. He said: "If Warrington want to
use tactics like that all season then fine, but the way they set out their stall to spoil our game was shambolic. "They were just out to kick us oft
the park. Anthony Daniels is lucky to escape with just bad bruising after a tackle both the linesman and referee missed. "Kris Matthews has a black eye
and a huge swelling over his cheek which he suffered the indignity of a booking for, which was according to the referee for 'feigning injury and over acting'! And the horrendous tackle on
Pete Smith had him seething Reynolds added: "In my years
playing football I've never seen a tackle like it. The fact their player gets just a yellow card when Ryan Fisher got the same for handling the
ball in their area baffles me. "It was three foot off the ground,
by the same player that injured Anthony, and the mark it left was down to the bone. I was very upset but the way the lads conducted themselves has to be commended as they didn't allow themselves to be brought down to Warrington's level. "W'e've instilled discipline in the
side at the request of the chairman and it was a credit to the lads." Reynolds is hoping that Will
Exton will be back on board for a difficult trip to Eastwood Town on Saturday. Lennie Reid (hamstring) is 50-50 in making that fixture and the Blues boss expects both Daniels and fellow Smith will have to sit out that game and Tuesday's trip to Cammell Laird. However he has lined up two new
additions to the side in a centre half and a central midfielder/right-back. The defender is 19-year-old
Jonathan Forbes who was at Kendal Town at the beginning of the season after training at Manchester United last year. He has just returned from America where he has been playing University football.
And the midfielder/right-back is
currently with a UniBond Premier Division club.
The coach to Eastwood Town will
be leaving Shawbridge at 10-30 a.m. on Saturday, with available space for fans priced at £5 per person.
Smith and Anthony Daniels both needed a trip to casualty after Warrington's heavy handedness on a cabbage patch of a pitch. Smith needed stitches
to a down-to-the-bone gash foliowing a horren dous two-footed tackle, and Daniels needed an x- ray to his achilles after studs were raked down the back of his leg. And they weren't the
only ones, as Kris Matthews was very lucky not to have a bro ken cheek bone after an elbow to the face swelled his eye up and unbeliev ably got him a booking for feigning injury! Apart from Daniels'
incident, which happened in the first 10 minutes and wasn't witnessed by referee or linesman, the final two occurred in the last 20 minutes. The game itself saw
Ciitheroe by far create the most goal scoring opportunities as if it had n't been for the wayward finishing of Craig Sarge- son and Chris Ward the Biues couid have quite easily had three or four goals. The best missed effort
of the first half saw a right wing cross fall at the feet of an unmarked Sargeson in the six-yard box but the winger mis
ROUGH-house tactics denied Ciitheroe three points on Tuesday and hospitalised two Blues players In the process. Co-manager Pete
timed his shot and missed the ball. However the Mng man
made up for it in the 44th minute as he rose high in the Warrington box to nod home Simon Gar ner's edge of the area free kick. The 1-0 lead looked to
be how the game would finish as Warrington had but one other attempt on target other than their equaliser, while Ward spurned two clear-cut chances at the other end. First the Biues striker
headed over from 10 yards out an inch-perfect Sargeson cross that had seen the winger skip past two defenders to get his ball across. And then a through
ball over the top saw Ward and substitute Chris Heslop run to a point behind the Town defence only to see the former take the ball and put his effort \yide with only the keeper to beat. Which typically left
Matthews to get a punch to the face and then War rington to net by a route one ball from the home keeper. James Mann come out
to meet it and the Ciitheroe defence failed to clear, allowing substi tute Phil Mitchell to round the lot and slot in a 90th minute equaliser. Warrington set their
stall out to stop Ciitheroe playing by any means necessary and on the face of it a point and no bro ken bones was a good result!
Byrom’s hat-trick crowns invigorating display
ClUhcroe....................5 Kidsgrove Athletic . . .1 A JOEL Byrom hat-trick capped an invigorating Ciitheroe performance against Kidsgrove Athlet ic on Saturday. The former Blackburn
midfielder's inspired touch dispatched a deft lob to break the deadlock as early as the 12th minute, before two more after the break ensured victory. He was joined on the
scoresheet by the return ing Chris Ward, who came

off the bench late in the first haif to smash home a Craig Sargeson corner and retake the iead. Goai number three fol
lowed, supplied by the lethal right toot of Ryan Fisher. Kidsgrove keeper Chris
Martin didn't know what day it was as Clitheroe's' play caught him coid, and even ied to the odd mix- up with his own defenders. It wasn't as though the
travelling team were a poor side, as the league's
leading goalscorer Michael Lennon took his tally for the season to 39 with a 42nd-minute equaliser. But the introduction of
Ward for the exceptional ly hard-working Will Exton, and Pete Smith for the injured Lennie Reid, tipped the baiance. It was Exton's relent
less running, though, that brought about Byrom's delectable opener. The striker made one of ‘
his now characteristic challenging runs on the
keeper, which would be deemed a lost cause by many. His speed unsettled the
out-coming Martin, whose poor 18-yard clear ance was volleyed back over his head by a quick thinking Byrom. Fisher's second half
strike was instigated by left back Simon Garner, as the club captain devel oped the left-wing move that teed up his team mate with an 18-yard bul let of a shot.
Ward and Smith both
went close with further opportunities, before Byrom capitalised on a poor defensive take down following a Ciitheroe goal kick, latching onto a through ball to race clear and slot home. And Byrom rounded off
a stunning team display when he made the most of the confusion between Martin and Kidsgrove captain Ashiey Woolis- croft, tapping home an easy effort after the centre
back headed over his own keeper. It could have been more
to as link-up play between Fisher and Jason Jones, and then Jones and Ward, could quite easily have made it seven. All this and the Blues have now gone four games without a booking too! Ciitheroe: Mann,
Daniels, Garner, Matthews, Anderson, Fish er, Sargeson (Reynoids), Jones, Exton (W'ard), Byrom, Reid (Smith).
