smoking cessation. Statins reduce the chances of having a stroke by 25%, but they have side effects including muscle pain, headaches and insomnia, among others, and should be used with caution where people have liver problems.. After taking questions from

members, the speaker was thanked by chairman Mr G Dixon.

Firm’s boost will help elderly folk stay home

SUPPORT from 3M a t Clitheroe has enabled Age Concern Lancashire to provide extra help for older people to stay safer in their homes. The charity has used a

£400 donation from the company, which makes aerosol valves and compo nents for the pharmaceuti cal industry a t its Clitheroe factory, to buy 100 night-lights and 80 room thermometers. The night-lights, with

an automatic sensor to come on at dusk and off at dawn, can help prevent people from falling if they get out of bed in the mid dle of the night, while the thermometers can be used to check whether their rooms are at the right tem perature for good health. Age Concern Lan

cashire’s area manager, Linda Salazar, said: “These aids are a great benefit to older people and we will be distributing them to the most vulnera ble across the district over the next few months. I would like to thank 3M for giving us this opportunity to continue our work to help older people live inde pendently at home. ” 3M has recently cele

brated the achievement of one million hours without a single lost time accident at its Upbrooks site. Site

Welcome to our ‘neighbours’

A CLITHEROE company opened its doors to let school- children and visitors look behind-the-scenes. Over two days Johnson

M a t th ey C a ta ly s ts invited schools, local residents and guests to its base on the Pimlico Industrial Estate. The aim was to show visitors

what happens on site and demonstrate how the company is developing links with the local community and surrounding

areas. The purpose of inviting pupils along on the first day was to help build relationships between education and industry. Feedback from the day demon strated that it had been a great success. Visitors were given a brief

overview of the company, a site tour and in a marquee they were able to view some of the different aspects of the life on the Clitheroe site such as environ mental work, health and safety,

creative thinking and recruit ment, laboratory demonstrations and customer information. A large contingent of retired

employees was also present, along with the Mayor of the Rib ble Valley. Coun. Doreen Taylor, and her consort, Mr Gordon Taylor, who also enjoyed the tour. There was face painting, bal

loon modelling and Punch and Judy, as well as children’s enter tainer Brian Gore.

MP meets and greets traders

AN invitation to meet and greet market traders and shoppers was taken up by local MP Nigel Evans. He spent time talking to

traders, learning that many goods sold at Clitheroe mar ket are produced and supplied locally. As well as sampling prod

ucts, Mr Evans had a look behind the scenes at some stalls. He had been invited along

by the local branch of the National Market Traders’ Federation as part of an ini tiative to generate support from local MPs. During his visit he also

joined the Mayor and May oress of the Ribble Valley, Coun. Doreen and Mr Gor don Taylor, in receiving a cheque for £165 raised from a tombola with prizes donated by traders. The money is to be given to
