Organisers threaten to pull plug on concert
ORGANISERS of a fund raising event in fields above Rimington are threatening to pull the plug following health
and safety demands. Emma Robinson and partner
Ian O’Reilly, of Lower Gazegill, had intended to stage the 24- hour music event on their land off Howgill Lane at the end of the month. They applied for a temporary
event licence from Kibble Valley Borough Council which was granted on July 3rd and limited to 500 people. A council official said that no
objections were received, but added that the scope for objec tions was very limited, basically
being confined to the police. Two years ago, a similar ex'ent
was held with more than 600 people present. Local residents had expressed the hope that it would not be repeated after police attended, following com plaints in the vicinity. Ribble Valley’s MP Nigel
Evans expressed his concerns on Monday. His spokesman, unaware at
the time th a t the licence had been granted, told the Advertiser and Times that he would contin ue to monitor the situation and that his main concern was that any such event should be in keeping with the surrounding area. He added, “clearly, if the event
is anything like the one two years ago (where condoms and needles were found on neighbour ing land) then he will be vigor ously opposing the granting of a Temporary Event Notice”. The organisers said on Tues
day that the event was planned to be a fund-raiser for North West Air Ambulance. They anticipated some £5,000
could be raised. Excess money from the previous event had been donated to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. They had, they said fallen foul of red tape and bureaucracy with regards to health and safety, and in particu lar the Events Safety Advisory Group (ESAG). “We have been told we have to
comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act. This is a real case of bureaucracy gone mad. If you have a wedding in your back garden and put a marquee up, you would not do i t ,” they added. Asked why the event could not
be held nearer to the farm prem ises, they said that the site had a fantastic panoramic view with some of the most beautiful coun- tyside in the world on the doorstep. To organise it near their home
would be bordering the village and would not be the best option. An extraordinary meeting of
ESAG was due to take place yes terday.

O O NLINE Toddler h u r t in street
A TODDLER required hospital treat ment after being hit by a runaway car in the centre of Clitheroe. The accident happened around 3-30 p.m
last Wednesday in King Street. A red Peugeot 306, was parked outside
the Post Office in King Street facing downhill while its driver ran an errand, leaving a passenger inside. It is thought that the car’s handbrake
failed and it began to roll downhill, veer ing across the road to hit the stone pillar between the frontages of Byrne’s wine merchants and Seasons clothes shop, com ing to rest against Seasons’ shopfront. A woman and two children were stand
ing on the pavement outside Seasons and one child, thought to be of pre-school age, was struck by the runaway car. Police and an ambulance crew were
quickly at the scene and the toddler was taken to hospital for a check-up and treat ment for minor injuries.
Royal Lancs falls victim to weeks of torrential rain
by Faiza Afzaal
UNSEASONAL downpours have led to the cancellation of this year’s Royal Lancashire
Show. Organisers of the three-day
annual extravaganza stated this week that, if it had gone ahead, it would have been sheer incompe
tence. The show, which should have run
from July 20th to 22nd, attracted 60,000 visitors last year. The deci sion was take to cancel after weeks of heavy rain waterlogged the site. The oldest agricultural show in
the country, the Royal Lancashire Agricultural Society can trace its roots back to 1767. This year was going to be the fifth and final time it was to be staged at the pictur esque showground in the grounds of Salesbury Hall, in Ribchester. Plans had already been made for next year’s event to be moved out of the Ribble Valley and held at a new site in Myerscough, near Garstang - providing a permanent home for the historic show. Mr Gordon Roberts, show chair
man told the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times th a t the organising committee could not afford to take
any chances. “We had been assessing the site
for weeks and had concerns because the ground was so wet. Weather forecasters predicted fur
ther torrential rain and after an emergency meeting on Sunday, we decided to cancel this year’s show,”
he said. “We are deeply disappointed
because we had been preparing for this year’s event for so long. It has been raining heavily for the past few weeks and we cannot risk going ahead with the show. “Because of the bad weather the
cars would sink in the mud and it would be extremely difficult for people to walk across the field with more rainfall predicted to fall on the showground.” He added: “We are, of course,
disappointed that we have had to cancel the event. We are disap pointed for the competitors, exhibitors and thousands of visi tors that were looking forward to attending. This year’s show was supposed to be a record breaker and we were expecting more than 60,000 visitors over the three day period. There was a record number of cattle entries, milking demon strations and a companion dog show run under kennel club rules, but we have to think of the health and safety of people.” Mr Roberts went on to say that since news of the show cancellation
broke, people have been very sym pathetic. “Everyone has been very sympathetic and farmers under stand because they have experi ence difficulties with the weather first hand.” Similar views have been
expressed by Mr John Heap, Rib ble Valley Borough Council’s direc tor of community services, said: “We are sorry that the show will not be going ahead this year, espe cially given the hard work of the society’s members and volunteers in preparing for it, but health and safety must come first and we fully support the society’s decision.” Ex-farmer and ex-committee
member Mr George Hibbert, who for years exhibited pedigree Lim ousin cattle and Suffolk sheep at the show, said: “It’s a major event for the Ribble Valley and i t ’s a shame that it has had to be can celled. The Salesbury Hall site is a beautiful venue, but unfortunately it hasn’t been a happy site to stage the show. “There were a lot of problems
with the weather in 2003 when organisers had to cancel the third and final day of the show because the ground turned into a quag mire.”
