Bay walk will keep vaccines safe from sun in Ethiopia
THIRTY members of a Clitheroe medical practice will be putting their best feet forward for charity next month. On July 21st, staff from The
Castle Medical Group will be walking across Morecambe Bay to raise funds for UNICEF’s Ethiopia Cold Chain Project. UNICEF - United Nations
Children’s Fund - is the largest non-governmental organisation involved in helping children around the world. The Castle Medical group is
currently sponsoring this char ity and more specifically the Ethiopa Cold Chain Project which helps with the distribu tion of vaccines to some of the poorest children in Africa, who often die from infections that could easily be prevented with immunisations.
A PROJECT to redevelop a Ribble Valley play area has been boosted by a £5,000 grant from Biffaward, a multi-million pound environment fund man aged by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts. Sabden Play Park Trust
made a successful application for funding through Bif- faward’s small grants scheme, introduced to enable groups to access lower levels of funding in order to improve the quality of life in their community. “Biffaward” is a fund set up
Biffa Waste Services. It uses tax charged on waste taken to Biffa landfill sites to benefit environmental projects near those sites. Sabden Play Park Trust is a group of local parents who
Some parts of Ethiopia are
so remote that vaccines cannot be transported to them with out deteriorating. Refrigerated buildings keep vaccines cool and enable them to be deliv ered to children living in these areas. Each store costs £25,000
pounds to build. The Castle Medical Group
has already organised a num ber of fund-raising activities over the past months and hopes that this sponsored walk will boost the total further. Anyone wanting to support
the practice can fill in the spon sorship form a t the Castle Medical Group reception or send a donation to The Castle Medical Group, Railway View Road, Clitheroe, BB7 2 JG. All cheques should be made
payable to The Ethiopia Cold Chain Project, (s)
Grant to improve play area
wanted to provide more mod ern facilities for local children. As well as a new zip slide, there will be goal posts and basket ball hoops designed to allow the area’s teenagers to socialise and interact directly through sporting activity. The current sports equipment available is limited and in poor condition. Martin Bettington, chair
man of Biffaward, said: “The members of Sabden Play Park Trust have worked extremely hard over the previous two years. “Without their organisation
and fund-raising efforts none of this would have been possible and we’re delighted to be able to provide a helping hand to enhance the facilities for such a dedicated community.”
