The sharky front grille, the voluptuous flanks and the bejewelled rear light clusters are all superbly detailed. The £17,550 Kumano also features dark brushed 1G in. alloy wheels to emphasise its sporting credentials. Certainly, in five door format, this car just looks sportier than anything comparably priced and with metallic or mica paint and unique Kumano badging, the picture is complete. This variant is based on the
popular and highly specified five- door hatchback TS 2 model hut as already mentioned, sports additional exterior and interior equipment. Inside for example, there is blue/black seat trim and a piano black centre console. Outside, this variant boasts pow erful Xenon headlights, with auto headlamp and auto wind screen wiper operation. Both the 147ps petrol-engined MazdaG 2.0 Kumano and the 143ps diesel- powered MazdaG 2.0D Kumano (which costs £1S,650) come in a choice of two colours - Titanium Grey Metallic or Stormy Blue Mica paint. While the Kumano package
has a total value of £925, the price of the petrol model is increased by no more than £370 and the diesel by £380 - com pared to the TS 2 derivative - representing a customer saving of £555 and £545 respectively. It’s also worth bearing in mind that standard TS2 kit runs to a BOSE
Premium audio system with six- CD autochanger and seven speakers, steering wheel audio controls, an electric sunroof, elec tric heated door mirrors, climate control air conditioning, cruise control, electric windows front and rear, plus leather wrapping for the steering wheel, gearknob and handbrake lever. Safety-wise, there’s Dynamic Stability Con trol (DSC) and a Traction Con trol System (TCS). Interior space is a strong point, swoopy styling notwithstanding. The steering wheel and drivers seats adjust in a multitude of direc tions, making it easy for almost anybody to get comfortable. The MazdaG Kumano is a
marketing-orientated attempt to entice new customers to this growing Japanese marque - but that doesn’t mean to say that it won’t he an effective tool in fur ther increasing the brand’s pres ence on the UK market.

HAVE always thought the Mondeo rather staid. I need a practical car, but I like some thing with a bit of class. I’ve tend
ed to prefer a hatchback model, too. With the latest version, I won dered whether such pre-concep tions much be in for a change after a week behind the wheel of the Mondeo in popular 2.0 TDCI Duratorq form. Even before I turned on the
engine I felt cosseted. The adjustable lumbar supports on the front seats are a masterpiece of design. They hug you in - and if you’ve been sitting at a PC all day, as I often do, you’ll soon feel the tension in your back ease away.
The Practicalities Despite my ill-founded prejudice

against the range, I have to admit that the latest Mondeo, even in standard form, offers a good all round family package. It ’s roomy inside, with a sensible boot. When I first took a seat in the
car, I immediately noticed the high-quality surfaces, materials

and finishes. As with the outside, dynamic lines and styling curves are again evident, plus the low-pro- file instrument panel provides very generous cabin space for front seat occupants. The dashboard is clear and the major controls for the elec tronics systems largely intuitive although the wood veneer finishes fitted to the Ghia model I tried I could have done without. I was surprised to find how close
the cabin now is to that you’d find in a BMW or an Audi.
Behind The Wheel Even though the version I tried
was a 130PS 2.0-litre TDCi rather than the top flight 140PS version, it seemed well up to the job. The car itself will, I believe, appeal to a lot of women who like a challeng ing drive as well as something that looks good. Use the traction con trol, though. I’d no idea what it would do, but it stopped the car scrubbing all its power away in dis

concertingly wheelspin when try ing to get out of T-junctions in the rain. An orange light on the dash board tells you that it’s on (though you can switch it off - but why?). Though the 2.0-litre TDCi ver
sion tested here is not generally recognised as a performance saloon, nought to 60 in 9.3 seconds for the lJOPS variant means that this is still a fairly fast car.
Value For Money Prices start at £14,995 for the
entry-level Edge 1.6-litre HOPS five-door and rise to £24,195 for the 2.5T 220PS Titanium X estate. The diesels (a choice of two 1.8s and two 2.0-litre units) cost from around £16,500. On average the latest Mondeo is priced £300 below the outgoing equivalent models. That’s despite the fact that it bene fits from £700 worth of added equipment across the range.
Could I Live One? It does everything I need a car to do, and a lot more besides.
