Champions see off the pretenders

CHAMPIONS Clitheroe stared defeat in the face at Padiham on Saturday before mounting a spirited comeback to defeat the pretenders to their throne. The table-topping

Arbories side looked to have the game licked only for the treble winners' resolve to shine through and see them home by the slimmest of margins. Simon Coulter's men

showed they're not about to give up the league title without a fight. And thanks to the bowl

'(>

ing of Josh Marquet (3-3G) and Haslingden sub-profes sional Dan Christian (2-74) the locals cleaned up. As despite sizeable

knocks from Kashif Sid- dique (47), UmarSaddique (45) and Peter Usher (40) putting the home side easi ly on course to their 200 target, some calculated

bowling and two suicidal run outs proved Padiham’s downfall. On a very wet Arbories

pitch it was thought that play wouldn't be possible, but after a half-hour delay it was decided to give it a

go. Winning the toss, Padi

ham skipper Andy Robin son put Clitheroe in to bat as he probably thought his table-toppers would take early wickets. Clitheroe captains old

and new opened the batting and took the score to 45 before the first wicket when Coulter was caught by Anthony Hall off the bowl ing of Qadeer Ahmed for 25.

Neil Bolton was then

partnered by Christian and the pair batted superbly. Boundaries were the

order of the day for the New South Wales paid man as his first three scoring

* ' -V \ X M fm

shots were 4,4,6, and he went on to score 83 in 70 balls with seven sixes and four fours. At the other end Bolton

was also scoring quickly through the good use of sweep and pull shots. The former captain scored 74 in 94 balls with three sixes and five fours. So at the end of the

innings 205-0 was an excel lent effort as Nesir Mah- mood was the pick of the Padiham bowlers with 3-45 off nine. Padiham didn't get off to

a great start as an early wicket from Marquet saw Phil Metcalfe (1) caught by

a blistering catch by Mark Hargreaves at gully for just 12 on the board. However, big hitting

Padiham paid man Sid- dique, partnered by Sad- dique, took the Clitheroe bowlers apart with fours and sixes all over the park as the home side raced past 100 in 12 overs. Clitheroe needed at least

one of these batsmen out to stand any chance of victory and Chris Brown produced the goods by playing a major role in the dismissals of both batsmen. Rushing for a quick sin

gle Siddique (47) was superbly run out by a div

ing under arm throw by Brown right above the stumps leaving Coulter just to whip off the bails and, just one over later, a flight ed ball from Bolton was skied by Saddique (45) and Brown again took a great catch under pressure. This silenced the crowd

and home players as they knew they had a game on their hands. Two more quick wickets

followed with that of Anthony Hall (0), bowled by Hargreaves, and Mehmood was another run out victim, this time from a superb throw by Marquet as the game opened up.

However, Padiham contin-

uedtoscorethe required rate of take them to what looked an easy victory, which meant Clitheroe had to bowl out their hosts to win. Tom Mustoe (18), Peter

Shirtcliffe (15) and Peter Usher (40) almost gave the home side another 10 points but Marquet returned for his second spell and bowled ferociously to take two late wickets. Add one more by Christ

ian, who returned at the football end after a spell from Bibby to take the final wicket of keeper Gavin Kelly, and it was job done for Clitheroe as Padiham.

Double disappointment for Read c r

READ haven’t had the best of fortunes over the last week or so. Saturday saw them hum

bled by local rivals Ribbles- dale Wanderers, which put a huge dent in their title aspirations. And that came after the

news that they will be with out the services of Thomas Odoyo for the remainder of the season. The Kenyan has been

summoned by his country to return home for their Twenty20 World Cup qual ifiers. And that means Satur

day’s game at Clitheroe is likely to be his last for the club for this year. Following the news last

week, you would have thought he would want to go out with a bang. But Wanderers contained

SP

him superbly, leaving the Read professional wicket less and with only two runs to his name. Even five wickets from

Frank Barden wasn’t enough, as the hosts cruised

READ Cricket Club first team. (A090G07/9A)

home by 92 runs. And it was the tandem

howling attack of Joe Scud- eri and David Howard that were the destroyers in chief. The pair took nine of the

10 wickets on offer as Read were skittled for just 90 in their reply. Only Dave Swarbrick

survived being a victim of either, as he was run out

having made just four. In fact, only the top three

made double figures, in response to Wanderers’ first innings score of 182-8. In a match reduced to a

37-over contest due to the conditions, Will Driver made 20 before being pouched by Martin Peel off Scuderi, while Joey Mar shall was castled by

Howard for 11. Kyle O’Connor found the

safe hands of Terry Braith- waite for 12, before the freefall of wickets began. As well as Driver and

O’Connor, Scuderi also picked up the scalps of Odoyo (2), Michael Whal- ley (1) and Andrew Rush- ton (0), to end with 5-42 from his 15 overs.

Howard added 4-39 hav

ing bowled throughout, as the hosts got the job done with five overs in hand. Earlier, Alistair Marsh

had top-scored with 55 opening alongside Scuderi, as the pair built a solid foundation for the rest to follow. Each of the top six got in,

only to fall just as the opportunity arose to con tribute heavily. It was Barden who was

the main thorn in the side, as he picked up 5-44 from his 13 overs. Odoyo and Rushton

opened the bowling, but both failed to yield a wicket as Wanderers gained the early initiative. And it would stay with

them throughout the con test, as Wanderers got their own season back on track. Read will look to get

back to winning ways at Clitheroe on Saturday (wickets pitched 1-30 p.m.). Meanwhile, Driver and

O’Connor both featured for the Ribblesdale League as

they were knocked out of the JW Lees Cup on Sun day. The locals took on the

Lancashire County League at Church Meadow, and lost out by 86 runs. Having elected to field,

their opponents made 205 before the Ribblesdale League were skittled for just 119. Driver made 13 and

O’Connor made 14 with the bat, while Driver failed to grab a wicket with his three overs with the ball. « RIBBLESDALE Wan derers are recruiting for a summer coaching course. Church Meadow is the

venue and Monday, August 27th, to Friday, August 31st, is the date. Cost for the 10 a.m. to 4

p.m. sessions, aimed at seven to 15-years-olds, is £60 for the week and all ses sions are run by qualified ECB and CRB-checked coaches. For further details contact Michael Britcliffe (428190) or Terry Braith- waite (428190).

Chatburn’s big win

CHATBURN seconds had an emphatic nine wicket victory over Pendle Forest in the Mewies Solicitors Craven Cricket League to continue their push for pro motion. The Fence-based side

batted first and were bowled out for 65. Chris Mulhearn (5-21) was the pick of the bowlers as the other wicket takers were Geoff Lambert (2-29), Robin Kennerley (2-3) and Ben Frankland (1-6). In reply Mark Holmes

(38 not out) and John Moore (20 not out) ensured an easy victory. Meanwhile, the first

team's league match at Embsay was cancelled but Sunday saw the side enter tain and nearly snatch vic tory from First Division leaders Thornton in the quarter-finals of the Wynn Cup. Chatburn batted first on

a difficult wicket and after a poor display were all out for 90. David Price top-scored

with 20 and the only other two players to reach double figures were Bob Devine (13) and Nick Hutchinson

(13). This modest total should

n't have been a problem to Thornton but the Chatburn bowlers and fielders per formed admirably. Wickets fell at regular

intervals, and with the last two batsmen at the crease eight further runs were required as Thornton took victory by a single wicket.

Cobras’ battle

AFTER several weeks without a match, a rusty Clitheroe Cobras Under 13s A side had a hard earned win against Edenfield at Chatburn Road. Batting first on a difficult

wicket, Clitheroe struggled to adapt to the conditions and lost early wickets. However, Nuttall (19),

Bowness (10) and Parkin son (10) steadied the innings and a final flourish by Le Breton (24) left Clitheroe with a total of 63 from their 16 overs. In reply Edenfield were

never ahead of the required rate due to some tight bowl ing and excellent fielding from Clitheroe, finishing some 25 runs adrift. Pick of the Clitheroe

bowlers were Bowness (1-3) and Banks (1-2).
