Statues for school garden

WORLD-FAMOUS British sculp tor Antony Gormley has inspired new additions to the children’s gar den at Sabden Primary School. Years 1 and 2 children devel

oped their understanding and appreciation of sculpture with the expert guidance of television artist Bizi Lizi, by experimenting with different materials such as wood, wool and metal and going on a trip to see real statues. Using their new skills, each child

made a terracotta figure, emulat ing Gormley’s famous work, The Field, where hundreds of figures were made. However, while Gormley’s stat

ues were plain and featureless, Bizi Lizi - real name Lizi Botham - encouraged the children to person alise their figure with small details. She said: “I said they could

make the statues belong to them and they came up with something that had meaning for them.” Years 1 and 2 teacher Juliette

Rawnsley praised the work the children had done in her class with the former CBeebies presenter, who she described as being full of enthusiasm. “It’s been a very exciting, enjoy

able time and the models they have made are unique,” she said. “They have seen the process of

making a clay statue for them selves. The workshops have increased their confidence to express themselves.” Lizi, who lives in Wesley Street,

Sabden, has run many different workshops at the school in the past year. She opens her Craftastic chil

dren’s workshop at Trapp Forge, Simonstone, with an open day this Sunday. Our pictures shows pupils Grace

Lodge (7), Josh Tetley (7), Alicia Heywood (6) and Ella Hargreaves (6) with some of the statues. (B120707/4).

Green ideas turn out to be winners

YEAR 6 pupils from Bolton- by- Bowland Primary School were delighted at being asked to attend the Primary Schools’ “Greener Future” conference at Pen- wortham, near Preston. They worked very hard to pre

pare for the event at which they gave a display on how remember ing to use the 3Rs of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle can have an effect on wildlife around us. All their efforts were rewarded

when they won the competition with their display and were thrilled to be presented with a wormery to put in the school grounds. The same 3Rs message was rein

forced when Recycler the Rapping Robot visited the school to encour

age the children to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, both in school and at home. The staff and pupils were thoroughly entertained by Recy cler’s funky songs to teach them

about the benefits of being “green”. Our picture shows some of the

Jungle celebrations of ‘better life’ money

A CLITHEROE-based children’s centre is roaming into rural areas. The Ribblesdale Children’s Cen

tre has launched a pilot project to develop services and opportunities to families in outlying villages. Funding for the Ribblesdale

Roamer scheme of £60,000 has come from the Lancashire Eco nomic Partnership. The centre will be working in

partnership with Ribble Valley Community Transport and Lan cashire library service. To celebrate getting the bid, the

centre is running five “Rumble in the Jungle” sessions at Chipping’s new pre-school, which is a t Bra-

bin’s Endowed Primary School, variety of jungle themed sessions. Children from Chipping and other Our picture shows children at the areas will be working through a pre-school.(s)
