to 10 4-0 wins for the league season in their two latest Second Divi sion fixtures against Blackburn Northern D and Towneley. In the Blackburn

vr

match, Derek Parrott was joined for the first time by mercurial Paul Ainger in what many courtside described as the “dream team”, and their contrasting styles

complimented each other well. Ainger’s whip crack

service action and Par ro t t’s heavy returns made for a short after noon’s work as they dom inated both their match es 6-1, 6-2 against the top pair, and 6-1 6-1 against the second. Daniel Bush again

joined senior player Steve Pym and they were as reliable as ever, although they were taken to a tie break in the first set by a talented young pair, eventually winning 7-6,6-2. Against the top pair

they had found their footing and dominated the match 6-1,6-1. In the Towneley

match, Roger Raven- scroft and Phil Mileham unusually dropped the only set of the match against a spirited side from Towneley, as the veteran Mileham tired - still suffering from a mid season malaise. Steve Pym and Daniel

Bush made light work of both their matches to secure maximum points for the Clitheroe side, each showing a great understanding of each other’s game without either player needing to communicate a great deal with each other. In the cup competi

tion, Clitheroe A had a walkover as Whalley were unable to put out a team in the semi-final match. The Clitheroe side will

once again play in the district cup final, and hope to go one further than they have in the last couple of years, finishing runners-up on both occa sions. In the Mixed League

First Division, Clitheroe have a very strong team, who are also pushing for the title in their league this season. . At the weekend

-f t

Clitheroe beat Burnley A in convincing fashion, 7- 1. Steve Pym and Mary Brass easily won both their matches in warm conditions. Steve and Maiy, two of

the best mixed players in the league, combined well with a fine array of shots, giving their opponents little chance. The second pair of Phil Mileham and Julie Pym played well enough, although neither played their best tennis, to win one match and draw the other.

RIBBLE Valley pentath- letes replicated last year’s success at the British Mod ern Pentathlon Champi onships at Millfield School in Somerset. Youth A Under 19 cham

pion Sam Murray retained her title and last year's Under 13 champion, Alice Fitton, took the Under 15 category this time out. The competition started

on Friday evening with fencing for the senior class es and both Louise Highton and Sara Burns featured in this group. Louise stated badly with a run of defeats but soon

was back in form, leading the competition by the end of the session, finishing with 14 victories and six defeats for 1,000 points. Saturday started with

the shoot for the seniors, with Louise disappointed with her score of 162 from her 20 shots. Next to shoot were Sam

Murray and Elizabeth Highton in the Under 19 age group with Lizzie scor ing 170 for third place and Sam 166 in fifth. The 200m swim was next

for the seniors and a long course personal best for Louise who took third place

with 2:15.73. Lizzie then emulated her

sister by winning the fence in her group to record 17 victories to 7 defeats and 1,000 points with Sam just one hit behind in third. The ride followed for the

seniors, this is a show-jump ing course of 12 fences including a double and a tre ble to a height of 1.1m with the horses drawn by lot. Louise was happy with

her draw and completed the course with two rails down and a seven second time penalty equivalent for 1,116 points to hold third place overall.

The senior competition

concluded with the 3000m run and a disappointing time of 12 minutes 23 sec onds for Louise which dropped her to sixth place overall and third in the jun iors. Meanwhile in the Under

15 group Alice Fitton had started with a score of 72 from 10 shots and a 100m swim of 1:03.36. The day concluded for

the Under 19 group in the pool with Sam first in 2:18.75 and Lizzie fourth but still holding an overall lead.

Sunday morning started

Poor Whalley book final place

WHALLEY produced their worst Twenty20 display of the season on Friday night, and still came away from Cliffe Park with a place in the final as Great Har wood snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Batting first, the villagers failed

to come to terms with a slow pitch and some tight bowling form Har wood, but still should have amassed more than the 118 they did without using up their full quota of overs. No real major contributions from

anyone helped, as John Rain top scored with 26, and Mark Fallon hit a rapid 22 off just eight deliver ies - including a mighty six. But the game was all about the

second innings, with Harwood strolling to what seemed a straight forward victory, aided by a poor dis play in the field and a couple of dropped catches. David O'Neill had dismissed pro

fessional Jermaine Lawson, but old campaigner Peter Sleep survived a chance before he was run out. Paul Houldsworth anchored the

reply well, as Harwood needed just five runs off two overs with five

Barnoldswick, while Clitheroe almost got in a full game, only to see the second innings cut short. Clitheroe scored 171-

9 against Great Har wood, having taken to the crease first, and Great Harwood scored

wickets remaining, this in spite of some fine bowling from O'Neill, Neil Cordingley and Declan Fitzhenry - again showing excellent control for one so inexperienced at the higher level. Cordingley was tasked with

bowling the last over but one, and he sent Houldsworth back for 48, then snapped up another when, stu pidly, Stuart Maher tried to end proceedings with the first ball he faced, only he holed out and went for just one run in the over. So it was all down to Whalley's

Sri Lankan paid man Bradman Ediriweera to ball the final over in the gathering gloom, and Har

behind, another followed with the fourth ball, and it was three needed off two.

A dot ball meant Whalley had

become favourites for the first time, Ediriweera kept his nerve and Rain executed a run out to see Whalley home and dry to the amazement of the fine Friday night crowd. Maybe not the finest all-round

performance from Whalley, but they achieved what they set out for, and will look forward to the final against Blackburn Northern.

with the ride for the Under 19 group, same course but to a height of one metre, Sam had three rails down for 1,116 points and Lizzie a clear round, 1,200 points and best ride for being clos est to the optimum time. Elsewhere, the fence for

the Under 15 group was taking place and 1040 points for Alice put her in second behind an Irish com petitor ineligible for an award, so effectively first overall. The 1,000m run followed

with Alice consolidating her position by taking first in 3:26.

The next run was the

Under 19s with Lizzie knowing that she would struggle to hold on to a top six place.

Sam completed the '

course in 12:00 to retain the title and Lizzie held on to sixth place overall.

The last event for Alice

was the ride which she com pleted with 1,152 points - just behind her Irish rival but well clear of all the British opposition to become champion again. Abigail Fitton competed

in the Under 13 class finish ing 12th and Sara Burns finished 21st in the seniors.

71-8, having been hit more than once by the rain. Whalley had Edenfield

on the rack at 97-6, with Richard Palmer behind the stumps taking four catches, before the rain yet again won the day. This week Read are

at home to Edenfield, Ribblesdale Wanderers entertain Padiham and Whalley welcome O s w a ld tw is tl e Immanuel. Clitheroe are the only local team on the road, as they travel to Earby. Wickets are pitched at 1-30 p.m.

On Saturday, the first team

entertain Oswaldtwistle Immanuel, wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m. as they aim to push on for a top four finish. But the highlight of the weekend

comes on Sunday when a large crowd is expected at Station Road for the semi-final of the Ramsbot- tom Cup when Whalley meet cur rent league leaders Baxenden.

side, but the reward of a spot in the final should be a big enough incentive for everyone as they, look to continue their recent run of good results. Hopes MU be high for Ediriweera

to find form, and that the other 10 men all play their part.

Revenge time for Waggon Cobras cruise

THE Clitheroe and District Midweek Cricket League returned to league action, with the Waggon and Hors es gaining revenge for their cup exit at the hands of Low Moor. Batting first, Low Moor

hit 91-3, which would nor mally be a winning score at Roefield. However, 30 from G.

Salmon made sure that Waggon eased home for the loss of just one wicket. There was plenty of runs

at Whalley where Sabden bowled first and reached 85 all out. In reply, Calderstones

made 86-4, thanks largely to Dave Seedall's first score of 30 (retired), the captain's effort being well received by all his team-mates. Rimington kept up their

outside hopes of winning the league with victory over Chipping Ramblers. Batting first, Rimington

reached 125-4, with Ian Bythell retiring on 30. In reply, the Ramblers

reached 94-8, with Garth retiring on 30. In the final match, league

leaders Chipping A over came St James', who scored 53-7, which proved too few for the churchmen to defend.

Chipping A's reply of 54-

2 kept them unbeaten and at the top end of the league. The cup final date has

been finalised. The two matches will

take place at Ribblesdale Wanderers on September 2nd. The Bradlow Cup Final

will start at 10-30 a.m., fol lowed by the Catholic Cup Final at approximately 1 p.m.

CLITHEROE Cobras Under 13s A had a convinc ing victory at Cherry Tree. On a rare fine evening, Clitheroe chose to bat first on a firm, lively wicket. Openers Banks (21) and

Dent (10) laid a sound foundation. Nuttall (24) played

another good innings as the Cobras took control. Other significant contributions from Parkinson (16), Houldsworth (12) and Le

Breton (10) left Clitheroe with an excellent net total of 92 off their 16 overs. In reply, Cherry Tree

were never in a position to threaten the target due to some excellent all round bowling and fielding from Clitheroe.

Wicket takers were Dent

(1-8) Kay (1-16) and Banks (1-7) enabling the Cobras to run out comfort able winners.

pitched last year’s semi finalists, Sydney Street, against Second Division Free Gardeners A, while the other semi-final was an all- First Division clash between Globe Heys and Clitheroe CC A. Free Gardeners A halted

Sydney Street’s challenge 171-167, as Clitheroe CC A came from behind to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against favourites Globe Heys (159-151).

Free Gardeners then took

the final 17G to Clitheroe's 169 in a real tussle of a game. After the first four

games, Free Gardeners A led by seven chalks, but Clitheroe CC A then went three in front after two good wins. Pat Holt’s win over Ian

North restored the Garden ers advantage, and victory was confirmed with a nar row defeat of Lee Edmond son by Mick Yerkess. Winning captain, Mary Wright, is pictured receiv- ♦ ing the trophy from league secretary Steve Dowber. (s)
