o w n s iz in g is a current motor industry buzz word. Effectively, it refers to buyers who are choosing to buy a car a size
smaller than they normally would in a bid to cut costs. These people however, want to
retain all of luxury they were used to. Hence the up-market, up-spec ver
sions of city cars, Superminis and family hatchbacks you can buy. Let’s take family hatchbacks as a specific example. Though the market leader, Ford’s Focus, sta rts at around £11,000, a surprising number of buy ers opt to pay nearly £4,000 more and get what effectively is the same car but with plush Ghia trim. These are people that in the past, would have been buying Mondeos. But what if you could downsize,
get all the luxuries you’ve been used to, yet not pay a ridiculous price to do so? That’s the thinking behind Proton’s GEN-21.6 GSX. All right, so you’ve never heard of
it, let alone seen one. So what? All you need to know is that it’s afford able and that it has been developed by Lotus. Enough said? Well maybe not. Protons of the past were, to put it politely, less than class-leading. This GEN-2 won’t be troubling Ford or Vauxhall sales figures too much but it ’s a huge amount better than anything the Malaysian marque has produced before. The GSX sits above more basic 1.6

engine develops reasonable torque in the mid and upper ranges but you’ll need to resort to the gearbox to make progress in the lower gears. Fortu nately this isn’t too much of a hard ship as the standard manual gearbox is a slick system. This GEN-2 will cover the sprint to 60mph from rest in 12.6 seconds and run on to a top speed of 118mph. A combined fuel consumption figure of 39.2mpg and CO2 emissions of just 169g/km are both extremely competitive. The cabin is a bit of a treat if

you’re used to acres of dull grey and boring details. I t ’s styled by the Lotus Design Studio and features a set of vertical air-conditioning knobs on the centre console support and a nice metallic finish that together really are a cut above the class stan dard in terms of aesthetics. The lat est models feature darker plastic for the dash and door trim inserts and buyers have the option of specifying leather for the seats. The steering wheel is also massively more sporting than the apologetic tillers seen in most cars of the Proton’s ilk as is the instrument panel with it s twin cowled binnacle and metallic look to the dials themselves. Everywhere you look there are neat design touches, from the unorthodox handbrake grip to the semi-circular door pulls.

10-Second Review The rather unloved post ‘06 Jetta makes a
canny used buy if you’re not a stickler for a hatchback. You’ve got a licence to haggle hard and land yourself a bargain, especially as many sellers will be anxious to shift stock. Go for a 2.0-Iitre petrol or diesel model with metallic paint.
What You Pay You’ll probably pay a good deal less than
you think and you should certainly strive to pay a fair slug less than the vendor is asking for.
The car you’ll find most often on dealer
forecourts will be the 1.9-litre TDI, probably in S specification. These start at around £10,750. You’ll need
to budget around £12,500 to land one of the earlier 2006 55-plate 2.0-litre TDI SE mod els but they’re a good deal more refined and have plenty of poke. Petrol-engined cars start at just shy of

What To Look For Keep a look out for cars that have been
flogged by corporate users and ensure that servicing has been attended to diligently. Check the car’s specification carefully, as despite the Jetta’s improved trim levels over an equivalent Golf, there are some quirks in the model ‘walk up’ which means that buyers often had to resort to the options list for seemingly straightforward features and may try to reflect this in the price. Don’t have any of that nonsense, and nego
tiate hard as Jettas are sticky sellers and any knowledgeable retailer will know this. The only option that will command serious money is the DSG gearbox. Mechanically speaking, the Jetta is a car that can be hnucrht with confidence.

On the Road The Jetta does without the poverty-spec
1.4- litre engines that kick off the Golf line up, the opening point instead being the llSb.h.p. 1.6-litre FSI unit. Next up is the intriguing 1.4- litre TSI turbocharged and supercharged engine in 140 and 170b.h.p. form and then a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine shared with the Golf GTI that’s good for 197b.h.p.. There’s also a pair of TDI diesel engines. The 105b.h.p. 1.9-litre is best ignored, many feel ing that the more modern 2.0-litre 138b.h.p. unit is worth the extra expense. Both diesel engines are offered with Volkswagen’s pio neering DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) system.
Overall The Volkswagen Jetta is one of those cars
that will never work in this country. We’re just too accustomed to hatchbacks
in this class and it will always be a minor player. While this may result in long faces for
those who bought one from new, it’s good news for the used buyer who can get equip ment levels way beyond standard Golf fare at lower prices and have something a little more individual to boot. Mechanically rugged, the Jetta is best
when fitted with a 2.0-litre engine, petrol or diesel. Our tip would be to try to find a ven dor who has specified the DSG sequential gearbox on his 2.0-litre Jetta but isn’t asking a big premium.
