as a solid back nine gave him a nett 69. But experienced past captain Ray
Ashley took second spot after a card play-off on the same score. Six competitors finished on nett 71,
and scrutiny of cards resolved that Paul Hamer finished fourth ahead of Orville Hudson, Paul Connolly, Denis Greenup, Dave Chippendale and Brian Ross. Carl Drinkwater and Nathan Dunn
won the gross prizes, and a packed club house showed their appreciation for the winners, on a day when more than 40 players no-returned, when the president handed over the prizes at the presenta tion dinner. Ian Walsh topped the leaderboard in
the midweek medal. His nett 68 was one shot better then

Nigel Clowes, who, in turn, finished a shot clear of Gary Moores. The winning trio, along with Mark Jones, qualified for the Tradesman’s Trophy Final next month. As the weather relented at Clitheroe,
there were lots of outstanding perform ances - none more so than the efforts of 13-year-old Tom Forrest, son of respect ed professional golfer Jane Forrest. He started by winning the junior sta-
bleford with 44 points, seven more than the total posted by runner-up William Kenyon. The annual competition between the
junior section and the club’s council is played in memory of Tom’s grandfather, Keith Panter. It was, therefore, appropriate that the
young star and his partner should tri umph 3 and 2. And the icing on the cake came when
Tom holed his tee shot on the par-three 14th to record his first-ever ace. The seniors section are a lively bunch
at Clitheroe and enjoy a busy competi tive programme. John Naylor took first place in the lat
est senior event with 39 points, one more than Norman Entwistle, who took sec ond by a shot from Bernard Bithell. John and Jean Holt showed impressive
teamwork to lead the qualifiers for the ELGA Mixed Foursomes with a nett 69. Chris Thompson and Sarah Walton

playing partner Paul Wood topped the leaderboard in Sunday’s fourball with 42 points, one more than the total amassed by Daniel and Eddie Preedy. The LGU Medal and Jack Tattersall
Trophy saw success for Janette Ranson in the latter, also topping the bronze divi sion of the medal. Her return of 101-35-66 earned her a
five-shot handicap reduction and a seven shot win over Jean Cole. Silver division honours went to Jean
Holt (94-19-75) and Colette Leaver (91- 13-78). William Kenyon came good in the jun
ior medal with a sparkling nett 63, and both Jacob Foley and Jack Rothwell earned further handicap reductions as they finished second and third respec tively.
IAN McDonnell (77-10-67) took Divi sion One honours in the August Medal at Stonyhurst Park, while John Buxbaum (86-19-67) topped Division Two. Lady captain Sue Kirk won the ladies’
medal ahead of Carolyn Blockeel and Sue Tipton. Ann Hudson won the subsidiary nine-
hole event.
JOHN Berry 82-11-71 won the second round of the Algarve Medal, in a "winner takes all", and wins an expenses paid trip for two to play golf in Portugal. This prize is generously sponsored by
the Mytton Fold Hotel and Golf Com plex.
That was followed by the annual Cap
tain's Weekend. Members competed in an eclectic com
petition where the best score at each hole over the two days counted on the card. Despite the previous few weeks of bad
weather, the course was in excellent con dition, having been prepared by Patrick Maher and his team over the previous week. The overall winner of the Captain's
Prize was Josh Davies with an eclectic score of 62, narrowly beating Mark Green on a back-six card play-off. Saturday’s leader was Chris Chadwick
(72-5-67) ahead of Malcolm Heyworth (82-12-70), with divisional honours going to John Berry (82-10-72), Chris Hughes (92-20-72) and Chris Czyzyk (96-23-73). And on Sunday Peter Kiddie
(91/23/68) won after a card play-off with Phil Chadwick (82-14-68), and the divi sional prizes went to Paul Barrett (77-7- 70), Gary Davies (84-15-69) and Nick Avino (103-28-75). Paul Sergeant was nearest the pin at
the first, and Frank Tunstall took the nearest the pin in two at the 15th. Lady captain Jean Sanderson lost on a
card play off to Allison Nuttall, who managed to amass a 14 point haul on the last 3 holes! Allison also took the two ladies spot
prizes of longest drive on the seventh and also nearest the pin in two on the 18th - with a two.
THE men’s outing from Whalley Golf Club to Hall o'the Hill at Chorley was, as usual, fully subscribed. On a beautiful sunny day, and with the
course inexcellent condition, there was some low scoring. The morning glory went to Trevor
Thornber with 22 ponts over nine holes, narrowly beating captain Richard Cross- ley (21) into second place. In the afternoon competition, in-form
Stua r t Herd, partnered by Martin Byrne, took first place with 44 points. Second, with 43, were Gary Bradley
and Ed Gierat and Trevor Thornber, partnered by Colin T Elliott, was again in the prizes taking third place with 42. On Saturday, in conditions as far
removed from the previous sunny day as possible, members competed for the Leslie Haynes Trophy. Bruce Craig's 41 points spreadeagled

victorious in the Valley Trophy for the third consecutive year. Played as a team event between Whal
ley, Clitheroe, Stonyhurst and Lon- gridge, the Whalley team of Fran Gier at, Sally Blenkinship, Bridget Rees, Maggie tfarvey, Ann Prior and Wendy Green defeated Clitheroe by a single point - a victory made all the sweeter as the event was played at Ciitheroe!

Antipodean adventure
tour of Singapore and Australia on a high - they played 10 games and won nine of them, some by a comfortable margin. Between matches they also enjoyed
something of an adventure. Away from the pitch they went on a
night safari in the jungle, toured the rain forest and met a killer crocodile, went snorkelling off the Great Barrier Reef, white water rafted down the Tully River, surfed off Australia’s Gold Coast and cruised around Syd ney Harbour. Their first game was against St
Andrew’s Junior College, last season’s Singaporean Schools’ champions at first and second team level. Despite suffering from jetlag, the
the first team played some tight, organised rugby and ran out 57-0 win ners with tries from Dane Cimpoias (2), Daniel Layzell, Phil Leonard, Adam Morgan, Robert Plumbridge, Matthew Richardson, Peter Small and Greg Wood. Morgan also convert ed six times. The second team did almost as well,
winning 57-7 with tries from Harrison Collins (3), Freddie Eaves (3), Char lie Cruz (2) and Albert Isola. Max Fullalove kicked six conversions. The second two games, in Cairns,
were an altogether tougher challenge. Playing St Mary’s Catholic College,
the style of the opposition’s play was evident from the first whistle. In true Australian manner, it was physical and aggressive, with offensive play intent on disrupting Stonyhurst and not allowing them time to settle and put their game plan into action. For the first 10 minutes the Stony
hurst boys were clearly ruffled, but their composure grew and a t the inter val they were 10-0 up. The physicality of the game then
crossed the line of what is acceptable, and boiled over into a series of ugly exchanges. Order was restored and the game
resumed its hard-fought, but legal, style, and Stonyhurst managed to confirm a 22-7 win with tries from Rob Plumbridge (2), Tom Capstick and Daniel Layzell, with a conversion from Adam Morgan. To the seconds’ great credit, they
also stood up to the challenge of a fiercely competitive side and ultimate ly won 26-0 quite convincingly, through disciplined, committed and skilful rugby. Tries came from James Cathcart (2), Matt Pickles and Toby Weigh-

UTSTANDING young rugby players from Stonyhurst Col lege have returned from their
man. Max Fullalove converted three times. The next stop was Brisbane to meet
up again with the boys from Toowoomba Grammar School, who visited Stonyhurst in December. The seconds played first, and after
a cut-and-thrust affair, with some stand-out performances from Charlie Cruz and wingers Matt Pickles and Pete Small, they secured a solid 19-0 win over a well-drilled, organised and motivated Toowoomba side. Tries were scored by James Cathcart, James Garlington and Matt Pickles, with Max Fulialove converting twice. The first team got off to a shaky
start as Toowoomba raced into a 19-7 lead, cutting lines through Stony- hurst’s backline seemingly a t will, with their clever decoy runners con fusing the visitors’ defensive struc tures. Half-time saw Stonyhurst trail ing 14-19. Whatever was said at half-time cer
tainly seemed to do the trick, and the next 35 minutes saw one-way traffic as Stonyhurst controlled the game from the first whistle to the last, and ran out winners a t 45-19. Tries were scored by Greg Wood (2), Luke Cop ping, Freddie Eaves, Adam Morgan and Rob Plumbridge. In a faultless display, Adam Morgan kicked six con versions and a penalty. Playing school sides on tour is one
thing, but playing club sides is a dif ferent kettle of fish - particularly in Australia. As the boys travelled west of Brisbane for their fourth match block against Helensvale Hogs, they really had no idea what to expect.

the breakdown and the fantastic way in which they manage to recycle the ball had caught them unawares in ear lier games, but the visitors looked a team that had come to terms with the Antipodean style of play and were

brought the Stonyhurst boys to arguably the strongest rugby-playing school in Australia, St Joseph’s Col lege, in Sydney. Having produced 53 Wallabies and
fielding 49 rugby teams every Satur day, including 11 senior teams, the vis itors quickly realised they were mixing it with the very big boys. Under the battle-cry of “No
Regrets”, captain Charlie Cruz led the seconds to the field for the final time.' Max Fullalove kicked off and, as
expected, early exchanges were fierce from the outset. The ball moved from end to end, with neither side able to breach the other’s defensive wall.

same, with the intent to move the ball quickly and keep it alive evident. This was typified by the final try of
the game which saw the ball move through 12 pairs of hands before Albert Isola finished off the score to guide Stonyhurst to a 25-0 win, and an unbeaten tour for the seconds. Tries were scored by Freddy Eaves, Albert Isola, Nick Isola, Sam Morgan and Tom O’Donnell. Having watched their touring
mates win their own encounter with Joeys, the first team were determined to continue the trend.
% Unfortunately, they struggled to
come to terms with what was simply a very, very good side full of sharp han dlers, aggressive hitters, masters of the turnover ball and above all else, ridicu lously quick. The record will show that Stony
hurst went down 0-28, but this is no disgrace against arguably one of the best rugby schools in the country, if not the world.
.The best side won on the day, and Stonyhurst had no complaints.
