WHALLEY Community spirit wins praise

VILLAGERS in Rimington and Middop have won well-deserved praise for their outstanding com munity spirit. Their parish was “Highly Com

mended” in the 2007 Calor Lan cashire and Merseyside Village of the Year competition, one of only three such commendations across the region. The annual competition is

organised by the Lancashire Asso ciation of Parish and Town Coun cils (LAPTC), with sponsorship provided by Calor - the UK’s leading supplier of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). Unlike some com petitions which judge towns and

villages purely on their pretty appearance, this one looks at what lies beneath the picture postcard

veneer. While still recognising villagers’

efforts with brooms, bulbs and bin bags, it also focuses on other important aspects of rural village life - the things that make a place a thriving community. The six judging criteria are community life, business, young people, older people, the environment and information communication tech

nology. Overall winner this year was

Borwick, near Carnforth, with Wrea Green, near Lancaster, a

close second. Prizes will be pre sented to all the award winners at a ceremony in Penwortham next month. Competition co-ordinator Mar

ion Gelder commented: “Our con gratulations go to all the success ful villages; our judges were extremely impressed with all of them and had a difficult task awarding the prizes. However, we must particularly congratulate Borwick on gaining the overall title. For a tiny village with just 162 electors, they have so much going on and such good communi ty spirit and they really deserve the top spot.”

Wind generator plan goes back to council

A PLANNING application has been re-submitted to Ribble Val ley Borough Council for installa tion of a 1 Okw wind powered gen erator on a 12m free-standing col umn on land to the north of Clerk Hill Road, Wiswell, and to the rear of the abattoir. Comments on the proposal at abbattoir site, off Clerk Hill Road

(number 0699) must be made to the council by August 10th. Other plans submitted include: Read: Proposed side orangery

area of 429 sq m. at Lower Edge Farm, Tinklers Lane (0696). Wliallcv: Change of use to
