Young woman in custody following repeated breaches of ASBO terms

A CLITHEROE woman wlio repeat edly breached Anti-Social Behaviour Orders is facing another prison sen

tence. Blackburn magistrates ruled their

powers of punishment were insuffi cient to deal with 20-year-old Rachael Linford who, they said, had shown a complete disregard for court orders.

Linford, of Siddows Avenue, plead

ed guilty to two breaches of an ASBO and was committed in custody to Pre ston Crown Court for sentence. Miss Catherine Allan (prosecuting)

said the first breach was in December when police found her in Siddows Avenue under the influence of alcohol, which was in breach of the order.

On February 24th she was seen in

Blackburn town centre, again under the influence of alcohol. She was approached by a police offi

cer who thought he recognised her and she initially gave false details. Miss Allan said Linford had received previous prison sentences for breach of ASBOs.

The current order was the second ,1 - _____1

that had been made against her and at the beginning of February she had been made subject to a community supervision order for breaching the

order. Mr Daniel King (defending) said

the supervision order had been made because Linford had been doing so

pool. “Her supervising officer was sur

prised to hear of this latest breach because of the progress Rachel was making,” said Mr King. “It seems she is on the cusp of finally realising that she has to demonstrate some maturity and responsibility.”

pumps for the mother-of- two who has fulfilled her life-long desire of running her own pub. Having worked as a bar

maid at the De Lacy Arms, in Whalley, for the past 16 years, Janet is now the new landlady there. “I t’s like a dream come

true,” she said. “I always wished to run my own pub and had my heart set on running the De Lacy, so when I was given the opportunity to buy it I jumped at it.” Situated in the heart of

Whalley, for years the hostelry has provided a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for local peo ple. Janet says she is looking

forward to running the community pub. She said: “I want it to be

a traditional boozer where customers can relax'and enjoy good ale. I don’t want to go down the route of serving food. “People can come in,

enjoy good beer and get into the spirit of things by

enjoying Sky Sports and pool, darts and domino competitions that we will be organising.” Janet added that the pub

is currently being treated to an interior revamp, but it will remain open as usual

out. Our picture shows Janet

with her partner, John Taylor, looking forward to welcoming regulars to the traditional, community pub. (CR160207/1)

Chess club’s most successful year to date

MEMBERS of Clitheroe Chess Club have continued their most successful season ever in 2007, though not without a few losses along the way. The A team, newly promoted to the first

division of the East Lancs Chess League, are currently fourth out of eight teams. They were beaten in January by Great Har wood A and in early February by Burnley, defeats that were not unexpected as these

clubs have dominated the chess scene for many years. Later in February the team returned to

winning form as they dispatched Blackburn A 3.5 to 1.5. In the semi-final of the Lucas Shield Knockout, they face Crusaders A, which should make for an interesting match. 'The B team has normally struggled to

maintain its place in the second division, but this season players are third out of eight teams. In Januarj' they faced Pendle A, of

Nelson, twice, losing the away fixture, but gaining a point from a draw at home. Also in January they defeated Blackburn 3.5 to 1.5 away and Crusaders B 3.5 to 1.5 at home. The next match was the knock-out encounter with Crusaders C from the third division. In theory the C team should be weaker than the B, so it should have been easy for Clitheroe. Crusaders were able to call up their

strongest C team and after a tough battle they won by three boards to two. The most recent B team game was against Blackburn B at home. After winning at Blackburn in the knockout and in the league, the home result was no more than a 2.5 each draw. The A team still has four fbttures to com

plete before the end of the season and the B team has a further three. On paper at least, both teams should collect more points.
