Yes, the majority of cars sold still go
directly to fleets, but the Vectra has at last become a car that you could con ceivably buy with your own money. Especially if it is a CDTilSO diesel version. Let’s face it, none of us enjoy fork
ing out for fuel. If you enjoy driving as much as I do, you are faced with a quandary. You can choose a light weight sports car that does not ham mer the fuel, choose a car converted to run on LPG or opt for one of .the latest generation sports diesels. If you have got a family, the last of
these options is probably the most practical, as LPG conversions are still few and far between and are hard to come by on cars that offer the driver any real fun.

agenda with a car like the Vectra CDTi 150. As the name suggests, there is a
hefty 150 b.h.p. on tap, which is very creditable indeed for a car that sups from the black pump. More impor tantly, this engine can generate a stump-pulling 315Nm of torque. You will believe th a t nugget of
information the very first time you accelerate down an on-ramp to merge with fast flowing motorway traffic, the seamless urge of the turbo-charged engine offering genuinely rapid accel eration. Even from a standing start - where
diesel engines rarely post good figures -
the Vectra will notch oft the sprint
to 60 m.p.h. in a mere 8.8 seconds, running on to a top speed of 134 m.p.h. The estate version is marginally
slower, getting to 60 m.p.h. in 10 sec onds and running out of steam at a still rapid 132 m.p.h.
The CDTi engine is a four-cylinder
unit of lOlOcc displacement and is fully compliant with the Euro4 emis sions regulations. This means that the Vectra side
steps the usual 3% surcharge that company car drivers often get stung by, reducing their benefit in kind tax bill. The engine’s efficiency owes much
to the turbo-charger with variable tur bine geometry and huge intercooler. With four valves per cylinder and common-rail architecture the engine is bang up to date, the big payoff being a combined fuel economy figure of 48.6 rti.p.g. for the hatchback and 46.3 m.p.g. for the estate. There is even a six-speed automatic gearbox option. I t has taken quite,a while for the
Vectra, and the diesel models in par ticular, to elevate themselves to a posi tion where they can credibly challenge ■ for class honours. With the CDTilSO models, that
time has now arrived. Vauxhall is understandably proud of this car. More power to it.

started to put a bit of substance behind the sales, but it was not until the Mk 10 model appeared in late 2001 that Toyota genuinely had a car to be proud of. With excellent build quality
and a range of top-notch engines, the Corolla put up a worthy chal lenge to cars like the Ford Focus and the Honda Civic. With three-door and five-door hatchbacks, a saloon, a compact estate as well as Verso mini-MPV models, tour trim levels and six engines to choose from, choice is niot a problem. Buyers of used cars benefit from Toyota’s peerless reputation „ for reliability and a market that
J has not realised what a great car the Corolla is.

the Verso mini-MPV is a very worthwhile choice. Underrated by many car buyers, the Verso starts at £7,400 for a 1.6-litre T2, with 1.8-litre power costing from £8,000. The pick of the Corolla line-up is arguably the 90 b.h.p. Verso 2.0-litre D-4D with prices

What To Look For The Corolla has forged a repu
tation for monotonous reliability, and while drivers of old Corollas may well have hoped in vain for a broken timing chain or an electri cal fire to interrupt the car’s clock work tedium, there i’s no such issue mth this version. As long as the service records have been properly adhered to, it is difficult to imagine a more trouble-free car in its class.
On the Road Being a new design from the
ground up, body stiffness is mas sively superior to its baggily shop worn predecessor. Although the Corolla cannot deliver the aggres sive handling of a Ford Focus, it nevertheless cosies up to the Golf and the Fiat Stilo in the go/stop/steer department. Somewhat disappointingly for
such an otherwise clean-sheet design, the engines have been lift ed from the current Toyota team sheet. A 97 b.h.p. 1.4-litre opens negotiations, followed by a 110 b.h.p. 1.6 and a 135 b.h.p. 1.8. For the first time in years, per
formance enthusiasts have a Corolla worthy of their wedge with the 187 b.h.p. 1.8-litre flag ship T Sport version. Those look ing for a decent diesel are well served by two variants of the 2.0- litre common rail, offering up either 90 b.h.p. or a perky 110 b.h.p.. The T Sport is worth a look if
you cannot get along with a Civic Type-R or stretch to a Ford RS Focus. The five-door option also means it can double up as viable family transport.
Overall The Toyota Corolla is at last a
car of which owners can be proud. I t is also quite an unusual range insofar as the “halo model” designed to boost the range’s image - the T Sport - is probably the least convincing of the lot. The best buy is definitely diesel
and quite possibly the unsung Corolla Verso mi'ni-MPV variant. Whichever model you choose, expect matchless reliability and commonsense design.
• I t is a car that rewards you over time; a car that impresses you with small touches betraying a manic depth of engineering. If you know cars, you will appreciate quite what a solid used buy this Corolla represents.
