and thunk the shifter into Drive and you will start checking your rear view for blue lights, no matter how virtuous your driving. Fit one with a set of chromed spinners,
hydraulic suspension and a thumping sub woofer and it would be the perfect San Fer nando Valley low rider. Whether it acquits itself quite so well in the Kibble Valley is open to debate. After all, for the £33,550 Chrysler is ask
ing tor the V8 300C, there is quite an array of tempting'alternatives, although to be fair, prices actually start at £26,250 it you go for a six-cylinder version (allow up to £1,500 more if you want the Touring estate body style). The car's history will also be lost on many.

Chrysler first C300 was launched way back in 1955, fitted with a 5.4-litre hemi (named after the hemispherical combustion cham bers) engine. Billed as America’s most powerful car, the
300 cleaned up in various road racing events, including Nascar and the Mexican Carrera Panamerica. Fast forward to the modern day and the
300C offers Chrysler’s third iteration of the hemi power plant. It is not an inherently efficient engine
design, the shape of the combustion cham bers and pistons combining to fire a good deal of unburnt fuel down the exhaust. Still, Chrysler has pulled out all the stops
to make a hemi engine relevant today. A cylinder cut out system switches the engine to four cylinders when cruising under part throttle, but even then the combined fuel economy figure of 28 m.p.g. seems very opti mistic. To appeal to those buyers who cannot
meet the asking price and fuel bills of the V8 model, Chrysler also imports a pair of V6 engined cars; a 3.0-litre V6 CRD diesel or a 253 h.h.p. 3.5-litre petrol. For those who think 5.7-litres of V8 is not
£12 995
enough, there is a 6.1-Iitre SRT-8 version also on offer and more space is provided by the Touring estate model.

I HERE is just something about the Chrysler 300C that gives it a “bad to the bone” image.
Settle behind the wheel, fire up the engine By ANDY ENRIGHT The V8 is an engine you never need to
work too hard to achieve some serious num bers on the speedometer. Torque is astonishing and you will end up
scratching your head, wondering how Chrysler’s test drivers managed to accelerate the car to the quoted figure of 6.2 seconds when it feels so much quicker. Quite what the top speed of 155 m.p.h. feels like I am unable to verify. If you are in the market for a distinctive
saloon with plenty of straightline urge and attitude to match, the 300C is a very inter esting bet. The only car that approximates the big
Chr3'sler’s appeal is Vauxhall’s Australian- sourced Monaro coupe, but this lacks the interior space and styling elan of the 300C. Designer Ralph Gilles highlights the
300C’s appeal. He says: “People in America want things to be good again. This car is extremely timely. It’s a can-do American car.”
naleaoiv guide City slickers
■ N an age of niche marketing, I it is rather refreshing to come
X across a class of car that should appeal to almost every
body. . Apparently, 80% of British
motorists travel no more than 20 miles each day to and from work, and of those 80% work in urban areas. These are the people targeted
by the city car, a smaller spin on the standard supermini concept, aimed at those who think that verj' small is very beautiful. ■rhe Japanese tried - and failed
- to launch this class of car in Europe in the early '90s, having been forced into the production of such models by their own over crowded roads. British buyers were having none
of it: apart from burning their fin gers with the odd Fiat Panda, just about the only thing they were prepared to consider that was smaller than a supermini was Rover’s ubiquitous Mini - and that was seen as pretty eccentric. Only with the launch of Fiat’s
Polish-built Cinquecento in 1993 did attitudes begin to change and sales rise to the kind of numbers that industry analysts had pre dicted years before. When Ford’s Ka arrived in
1996, followed shortly afterwards by the SEAT Arosa and VW Lupo twins, customers at last had the kind of choice they had been crav ing, particularly as the Far East ern makers had tried again and were pumping more Europeanised city cars into Europe as fast as they could make them. Since it took the city car sector
so long to get properly started, it is only now that the used buyer

an awful lot of sense. The appeal of a bike that cannot fall
O
oyer never really gets old and the addi tional stability of that front end means you can load it up with gear in the hefty luggage compartment and not worry about it feeling inherently unbalanced. Piaggio is aiming the MP3 at gadg
et lovers, fashionistas and commuters who don’t trust bikesiTwo models are available to UK customers. The 125cc version costs £3,999, while another £300 will net you the punchy 250cc variant. This is serious money and a long way removed from standard footer fare. Perhaps the closest rival in terms of quirky appeal was BMW’s
I enclosed Cl, but the appeal of this model quickly waned when buyers realised they needed to wear a helmet.
NCE you have laughed off all those jokes about training wheels, the Piaggio MP3 makes
By ANDY ENRIGHT. Options include a winter screen and a
TomTom GPS. The 125cc model can be ridden by
anyone over 17 with a CBT certificate, although it might well be worth wait ing until you have got your full test, so that you can get the added poke of the 80 m.p.h. 250cc model. For tax pur poses, the MP3 is classed as a powered two-wheeler as the front wheels are less than 420mm apart. Rather unexpectedly, the Piaggio
MP3 handles almost exactly like a scooter with one front wheel. Cynics will doubtless wonder why you should fork out all that money for a clever engineering answer to a question nobody’s asking, but the MP3 does offer some key safety advantages. For a start, it is very difficult to wash the front end out on the sort of
leaves, diesel or wet manhole covers that are often found in city centres. Either one or the other of the front tyre contact patches always seems to have grip. Grab the brakes mid comer and where a normal scooter would have taken to the tarmac, the MP3 just slows down. This is just as well as the MP3
weighs more than a lOOOcc super sports model. Extra rubber
at.the front also means better braking power and Piaggio claims a 25% decrease in typical braking distances. Press the Seif Stand button and the bike locks upright, so it cannot fall over. I was certain that the Piaggio MP3
would prove a temporarily amusing diversion, but would fall to pieces under closer examination. Sometimes i t ’s great to be proved wrong. Although it is expensive and complex, there are real benefits to the three- wheel configuration.

can, for the first time, enjoy a real ly wide choice of alternatives. Cars like these were not much
cheaper than their larger supermi ni stablemates when they were new, so do not expect it to be any different on the used market. You can, however, expect to add the benefit of a slightly smaller price tag to savings on fuel, insurance and servicing costs. Throw in easi er manoeuvrability and “chuck- ably” fun handling and the appeal becomes easy to see.
Cheap and Cheerful There is a huge selection of
pocket money candidates on the market, but few that are worth your while. Steer clear of older Minis (the ones without the catal ysed 1.3-litre engine introduced at the end of 1992). Build quality was particularly poor prior to the early ’90s and Minis were difficult enough to work on at the best of times. A more sensible choice that will
not be nearly as much fun is some thing Japanese. Something from the period in which the Orientals were making no effort at all to make their tiniest products appealing to the European mar ket. Not much is about from the
early ’90s, but you might you might find the odd Subaru Vivio, first generation Suzuki Alto or Honda Jazz. Later models such as the Suzuki Wagon R and the Dai hatsu Cuore may appear a little more tempting. For a mainstream European
alternative, you will need to stretch to something newer, assuming you do yourself a favour and discount Fiat’s straight-laced Panda, also rebadged and sold by SEAT as the Marbella: both are trouble. Much better is the design that replaced this one, the Polish- built Fiat Cinquecento, announced in 1993. The l;l-litre Sporting version
was a hoot to drive, although like many early city cars, crash integri ty was not the car’s strongest point. Kia’s wobbly-handling Pride was based on an older 1980s Mazda design and was far less fim, but at least draped slightly more metal around you. An updated version, the Perod-
ua Kelisa, is also available if own ing a very cheap car with a recent plate appeals.
Affordable Mid-Rangers The key player in this sector of
the market is Ford’s Ka. Ford had soon realised how Fiat’s Cinque cento was mopping up sakes right across Europe and while Vauxhall lagged and dithered. Ford launched the car which has come to symbolise the sector. Airriving in 1996 with futuristic
looks that flattered to deceive, since power came from a 1.3-litre Endura-E petrol engine with roots going back more than a decade, the Ka was an instant hit. SEAT followed in due course with the cheeky Arosa. Early P and R-pIated SEAT
Arosas and Ford Kas represent a good bet, particularly when you consider Japanese alternatives that are cheaper and better equipped, but in almost every other way inferior.

Stripped-out entry-level ver
sions of larger superminis like Peu- geot’s 106, Citroen’s Saxo and Renault’s Clio were all promoted as city cars by marketing depart ments denied by their design teams of the real thing. A whole slew of pretenders soon
followed, Vauxhall jumping into bed with Suzuki to bring us the Agila and Hyundai putting a toe in the water with the coolly received Atoz and Arnica models. Thanks to their Worthing
design studio, the Koreans at Dae woo showed everyone how it should be done with the Matiz, introduced in 1998. All right, so it was a little flimsy, but in every other way, it was the perfect city
car, with five doors and a price tag so low that rivals could not under stand how Daewoo could do it for the money (they could not: a loss was made on every car and the new Daewoo models now sport a Chevrolet badge).
Desirable But Potentially Pricey If you have got the funds then
you can afford some surprisingly sophisticated city cars. Late regis tration Ford Kas are still probably the default pick, but many will be tempted by the cheeky good looks of Volkswagen’s Lupo, introduced in 1999. With a range of decent power plants and rock solid build quality,
the Lupo commands hefty residu als. The late shape SEAT Arosa is a Lupo with a Spanish accent and many feel that the diesel versions in particular are the pick of the city car crop for the canny buyer.
What To Look For Since most of these cars will-
have been used only for short trips and urban use, you do not need to be too suspicious of low mileages. You do, however, need to look out for the usual parking dents and scratches, including grazed or split bumpers and kerbed wheels. The large, wide-opening doors
which tend to be fitted are prone to knocks. Be equally fastidious when checking the interior, since the quality of materials used is unlikely to be of the best and may well be looking and feeling fairly tired. The same goes for things like sunroofs (which often tend to leak) and electrics (check electric win dows, rear wipers and central lock ing where fitted). Engine-wise, it is pretty simple.
Bear in mind though, that the tiny engines fitted to most city cars mil in many cases have had to work over-hard on longer, fully-laden trips.
