“THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE”, performed by Ribchester Amateur Theatrical Society (RATS)
THERE is a calendar of events in Ribchester you can set your watch by. Two are the RATS Pan tomime in February and the Field Day in June. By a sleight of hand
Chris Freeman, who wrote this marvellous script and the original lyrics, brought both these events together to delight and entertain the local audiences in seven per formances in February. Posters around Ribch
ester proclaimed that this- was a “traditional pan tomime” and indeed The Sorcerer’s Apprentice met ail the criteria and then added a few more. Instead of just one Dame, we were treated to four manifesta tions of “Bertha Bunn” (played in various guises by Rob Hindle, Bryony Frost, Keith Flood, Robin Simmons and Tam Dibley). We had a kindly wizard
(Mick Flynn) and a wicked witch (Sue Cron- shaw); we had a principal boy and girl (Rachel Rud
dock and Helen Charlesworth); a commu nicative cat (Mary Mori- arty); a dopey, love-struck boy (Will 'Thomas): a very naughty apprentice with a (well hidden) good side (Laura Frost); a com edy duo (John Royle and Dave McGarry) and a splendid young chorus (Hannah Williams, Nora Moriarty, Gabby Mori- aty, James Watts, Emily Watts,
George Charlesworth, Lottie
Fendall, Jonathan Walter, Emma Walter, Rachael Dickinson and Isobel Austin) - every possible ingredient for success. What the players also
managed to do was to perform two types of pan tomime. The matinee per formances were appropri ate to younger audiences and the last night per formance, played to a full house comprising mostly adults, was a rollicking, hilarious, energetic.

scripted and ad-libbed knockabout comedy. Everyone is to be praised for his and her contribu tion to this team effort. Produced by Dave
Proctor and directed by Keith Flood, this was a lively and entertaining, show which showcased the young talent of Ribchester and drew on the considerable strengths of the regulars of the soci ety. This annual event requires real team-work.

age of two trips per year for the past 28 years is partly attributable to the fact that he lived for peri ods of time in Bangladesh and Beijing and partly due to having worked for OTT Expeditions and Karakoram Experience. Tom has lived in Sheffield since 1983 and has climbed with many of the mountaineering world’s household names, includ ing A1 Rouse, Joe Simp son and Andy Cave. If you are thinking of a tr ip to the Himalayas
and fancy a quick tour around v ir tu a l ly the whole range in an hour- and-a-half, the club wel comes members and non members alike. The venue for the
