Ramsgreave and Wilpshire Station to L
Clitheroe. We walked from Clitheroe Station to the
main Castle entrance and there we became “Explorers and Detectives”, looking for clues as we set off on a trail which took us up and around the Castle Keep, through the rose garden, to the Ijandstand, tlie bowling green, the skateboard park, tlie volleyball pitch and led us to the maze. Having extricated ourselves from the
maze we ended up in the children’s play area, where we played and had a really good lime. We left reltictantly to go and find that familiar local land mark, the “Golden Arch-

deer with peanuts, horses with grass, while the sheep carried on munching and geese, peacocks, snakes and rabbits did whatever it is that they do. There was space for the children to run and jump, to cross streams and to explore, all out in the fresh air, which is the main reason they have come from
Kill years ago THE third annual fete and gala organ
ised by tlie Billington and Whalley Indus trial Co-operative Society Ltd was a great success despite bad weather. Members from Barrow, Whalley, Wiswell, Billing ton and Langho, with their wives and children processed to Whalley Cricket Field where sports, games and Maypole dancing was enjoyed, along with refresh ments including coffee, pies and buns. 9 An advert offered a 60-day free trial
of the Evans Vacuum Cap for the “culture of hair”. It said that without the use of drugs or chemicals this practical invention would aid hair growth if only worn for three to four minutes per day. Anyone not seeing a gradual new growth of hair would be able to return the cap “at no expense”. 9 At the annual finance meeting of
Clitheroe Central FC players wages were given as £271 19s 4d and average gate receipts were £12 per match.

SINCE the appeal was made two
months ago for money to pay for a new face for the clock in the tower of St James’s Church, the Rector, the Rev. J.S. Parry, has received about £18. Of this amount, £10 came from a col
lection on Sunday during the dedication of the Women’s Standard of the Clitheoe branch of the British Legion. The clock, believed to have been dam
aged by stones fired from catapults, was repaired at a cost of £24. O Pupils of St James’s School gave a
concert on two evenings which raised £45 for church funds. Each class in the school contributed
some form of entertainment. ® Country and Maypole dancing by
the children of the village school was one of the highlights of Tosside’s annual vil lage festival and children’s sports held in bright sunshine.

ON May 27th, Christian Churches all over the world cel- ebraled the Feast of Pentecost, recalling how God's Holy Spirit came down on the apostles and disciples gathered in the "upper room" in Jerusalem. ’I'he event is recorded in the
second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles in the Bible. The results were dramatic - imme diately the apostles rushed out and started preaching about Jesus to tile crowds who were in Jerusalem at that time, crowds

Mogilev under the umbrella of the BLack- burn Group of the Friends of Chernobyl’s
Children. My point in writing this is to say that in
planning this day I liad experienced noth ing but helpfulness, at the railway station, at McDonalds, at Lords House Farm. And on the actual day there were friendly smiles and greetings every step of the way for out group of little seven-year-olds. So if you are looking for a good day out.
then there is plenty to see and do right here on our doorstep, for which the children would like to say “spacebo bolshoie!” (thank you very much). 9 Sheila Goodman is a member of

25 year.s ago VIOLENT thunderstorms in many
parts of the Ribble Valley brought flood ing - and criticism of motorists whose speed caused waves of water to flood into homes. Parts of Taylor Street, Bawdlands,
Whalley Road and Railway View Road, in Clitheroe, were among the areas most affected. Matters were made worse by the speed
of traffic. At the time, Mrs E. Whitham, of Railway View Road, said: “Drivers would not slow down and they sent waves crashing up to my house as they passed through the floodwater.” 9 Prospects of finding permanent jobs
for at least 150 school leavers in the Clitheroe area this summer looked gloomy. Rather than joining the dole queue, many of them were now opting for spells of six or 12 months on Government work experience programmes.
Open up the Spirit
who were there to celebrate the Jewish feast of Weeks. But do Christians expect the
Spirit to act in same dramatic way today? Most of them probably don't, but why shouldn’t he? Jesus Christ promised to be with his follow ers, his Church to the end of time: so shouldn’t the Spirit be always there as well? And there is no reason why the action of the Spirit should bo confined to one day in the year. It is certainly hard for us to
picture or to understand the nature of the Spirit. We can picture Christ, for he was a human being, but the Spirit is not so easy to categorise. But there are many Christians who would claim to have experi enced the Spirit directly, empowering them to go and do things which they would other wise never have thought of doing. Many Christians worry all
the time about how they stand with God - are they doing
right, does he approve of what they are doing? Other Chris tians are always asking God for things and often feel he does not answer their prayers. Per haps it would be better if each day each one of us asked the Lord for outpouring of the Spirit on ourselves for that day - I am sure that if we really opened ourselves to the Spirit, then dramatic things would happen.

the majority of which were for mer members of St Mary’s Youth Group, which was formed by the then vicar the Rev H. A. Bland. The event was organised by
former members Fred Johnson (75), his wife, Jean Johnson (nee Aldersley), Pat Cunning ham (nee Ellse) and Helen Waggett (nee Catlow). Mr Johnson, who lived in
REUNION for members of a youth group that was
Clitheroe for 30 years, but now lives in Houghton, said former members of the youth group travelled from far and wide to attend the reunion. He said: “The youth group
was great fun and provided us with somewhere to go every night of the week.” Entertainment at the youth
group included numerous games such as table tennis and snooker and activities such as amateur dramatics and danc
ing. “We used to run it along the
same lines as Parliament. We had a prime minister and a minister for transport. It cer
tainly got you thinking about politics doing it that way,” Mr Johnson added. The group also used to meet
up every Sunday evening at St Mary’s Church where during the winter time they would enjoy talks from local speakers and in the summer time walks in the local countryside. When the Rev. Stanley
Birtwell later took over he introduced holidays for the group, the first of which was a week-long trip to Castleton in Derbyshire. The youth group eventually
became the 55 Society, so named because it was formed
in 1955. This later disbanded, but members of the original youth group have been so keen to keep in touch th a t this year’s reunion was the fourth of its kind. Organisers are hoping to hold another in the next three
to four years. Mr Johnson, who explained
that only maiden names are used at reunions, added that it was great to see so many old faces. Our picture shows a reunion
for former members of St Mary’s Youth Group at Clitheroe Cricket Club. (T060507/9)
