A stand of 70 between

Andy Lambert (36) and man-of-the-match Andy Booth (54 not out) proved enough to ensure victory with four overs to spare. The previous day, Chat

burn enjoyed a 38-run vic tory over Glusburn. The locals made 210-7,

with opener Lakin led the way with 49. Steve Bowker added 22

Clitheroe move third

CLITHEROE Tennis Club A moved third in the table with a 3-1 win against Accrington A. Phil Mileham and Steve Pym were in commanding

i form as they overwhelmed the top pair 6-1,6-3. On the other court, Derek Parrott and debu-

!§j| tant Andy Todd took the first set 6-2, but faced a 4-0 scoreline in the third set,

In the return rubbers, Mileham and Pym

■jfe wrapped up victory, but the second pairing lost to Accrington’s top duo. The same teams then

$ met in the cup. Mileham and Roger

Ravenscroft made light work of both Accrington

pairings, and Peter Bell and Ian Brown played some determined tennis to win the vital set against the Accrington second pair - and although they eventu ally lost their two rubbers, the vital set enabled them to go through. Also in cup action, the

Clitheroe A Mixed team, were drawn at home against Blackburn Northern. Mileham and Louise

Burrill lost the first set on a tie-breaker, but the pair dug in and won the second set easily to draw 1-1. Paul Ainger and Jennifer

Holgate beat their first opponents 2-0, but lost their second match. Mileham and Burrill eas

ily won their return match 2-0, giving Clitheroe an overall sets victory of 5-3.

6 WHALLEY B tied

with Parkwood B on sets and games won in their Sec ond and Third Division Knockout Cup clash. David Walters and

Robert Houseman narrow ly lost their first match 6-4, 6-4, however they beat the visiting second pair 6-4,6-3. Peter Heyes and Adam

Pimperton also had prob lems against the impressive Parkwood first pairing, securing only four games, but showed good form to secure a 6-3, 6-2 win over the second pair. With two wins each and

four sets apiece, the match would have been decided on games won, but with this also equal, a replay will have to separate the teams.

WHALLEY suffered a com prehensive defeat at The Arbories on Saturday to in form Padiham. Martin Davies' side failed

to rack up enough runs, despite the captain showing the way with a determined 61.

A score of 213-6 should

have been defendable, but Padiham cruised to victory with 13 overs to spare with the h elp of dire bowling and fielding. Things got off to a desper

ate start for Whalley when professional Bradman Ediri weera fell second ball to Nesir Mehmood, caught at gully by Naveed Ashraf. John Rain did not hang

around as he made 21 off just 19 balls, only to then be run out at 24-2. Neil Cordingley (24)

joined Davies, and they looked comfortable before the former was caught and bowled by Mehmood for 24 at 36. Lee Kearsley fell for 18

when he looked set, but Davies progressed to his 50, before being fifth man out for 61, including nine fours and a six. Richard Palmer added a

valuable 36 including four fours, as Mark Fallon looked to attack the bowling and move the score past 200. His splendid cameo pro

duced came off 25 deliveries, including four maximums as the innings drew to a close. However, run machine

Kashif Siddique wasted little time after the break, and motored along with some fine pull shots in a quick fire start that saw his opening partner Kevin Hitchon fall for 18 with 55 on the board, before the danger man went two runs later, caught behind off David O'Neill for 37. The Padiham paid man

was soon joined by Michael Hawke, who failed to trouble the scorers, and another dis

Anna’s a sporting superstar!

CLITHEROE athlete Anna Griffiths showed her all-round sporting ability to win the Loughborough University Superstars. In a competition remi

niscent of the 1970s and 80s television show th a t pitted elite athletes from different sports against one another - including rowing, gymnastics, hock ey, netball, football and

basketball out on top.

- Anna came Loughborough is one of

the top sports universities in the country, full of Great Britain representa tives, so she was up against stiff opposition. Competing for the Uni

versity Athletics Club, Anna was second in the 100m and long jump, won the shot, where she threw

11.47m, and was fourth in the 800m, before, two days later, moving on to basket ball shots, where she fin ished fourth, a win in the 50m swim and a second place in the 60m canoeing. The top four points win

ners went to the final in Hey Ewe, where Anna emerged victorious after gym tests, held a t mid night.

Lying equal first, Anna

did 66 press ups and 53 squat thrusts in a minute to take the overall title. Anna was awarded a

trophy and special crown, and won £200 for the Athletics Club, and free membership for herself at th e Powerbase weights complex, which last year cost her £220.

missal would have made Whalley favourites. But Umar Saddique and

Anthony Hall had others ideas, and a fine partnership of 100 put the home side in control. Hall fell two short of his

50, while Saddique kept going with Mehmood, who wasted no time in wrapping up the victory with 35 off 17 balls, including seven fours and a six, with his partner on 68 when stumps where drawn. Whalley will look to make

amends when they entertain Clitheroe at Station Road on Saturday. The Station Road side

start their Twenty20 cam paign with a home game against Edenfield tonight, wickets pitched at 6-30 p.m. Read skipper Will Driver’s

unbeaten 117 inspired Read to victory at Oswaldtwistle Immanuel. Driver smashed 11 fours

and four sixes, as the Whal ley Road side totalled 211-5. There were further contri

butions from Nick Marsh (27), David Swarbrick (23), professional Thomas Odoyo (11) and Oliver Newby (21). In reply, Frank Barden

proved chief wicket taker as he ripped out the middle order. Odoyo disposed of danger

man, opposing professional Ahmer Saeed, leg before, having

seen the

Oswaldtwistle player take his team to 134-5 with a knock of 71. After his dismissal, Read

looked set for maximum points, but Paul Dignan and Imran Abid hung on, with the latter dropped in the penultimate over. Odoyo returned 2-49,

Rushton 1-32, Eastham 1-30 and Barden 4-26. This Saturday, Read are

at home to Great Hanvood, with wickets pitched at 1-30 p.m. Ribblesdale Wanderers

lost by 124 runs at Cherry Tree.

With Joe Scuderi still

away on international duty with Italy, he was replaced by Hans Christian and the sub professional took 4-58 as Tree were put in to bat and totalled 228-6. Openers Mark Hadfield

(37) and Ahmer Mirza (23) got the innings off to a solid start. Professional Zahoor

Elahi built on that as he hit 96 in a 165-run second- wicket partnership with Hadfield, after Mirza had been trapped leg before by Christian. The paid man struck 13

fours and a six for his 96, off 88 balls, taking the score from 39-1 to 204-5 by the time he too exited at the hands of Christian. His innings formed the

backbone of Tree’s 228-6. In reply, Ribblesdale's

batting struggled to get close to the pace set by their hosts, as Nigel Robbins ripped through the order with 6-31, cleaning out the top four. Opener Alastair Marsh

was first to go, caught by Sudnik, for Ribblesdale's top score of 25, closely fol lowed by Christian with 24. Their partnership of 45

for the first wicket was the best of the innings, as after Christian's dismissal the side lurched from 54-2 to 59-4 with the wickets of Joe Bunyan and Martin Briggs. Craig Hall (17) and John

Braithwaite (10) offered up a little resistance, but the Church Meadow side were all out for 104. This Saturday, Ribbles

dale Wanderers are home to Settle, wickets pitched at 1- 30 p.m. Peter Dibb's century

wasn’t enough as Clitheroe lost out by sic wickets to Lytham in Sunday's ECB Cockspur Cup q ua r te r final. The Chatburn Road side

failed to build more than two decent batting part nerships.

Only Matthew Coulter

(22) and Dan Glover (26) could provide any real sup port for Dibb, who hit 104 off 88 balls, including 15 fours and a six, as Clitheroe edged the score to 200. In reply, Clitheroe strug

gled to contain Lytham. Opner Nick Knight

managed 32 runs, the majority of which came in his second wicket partner ship with G. Roberts (40). But it was the la t te r ’s

stand with the undefeated Lee Hilton th a t set the ground work, doubling the side's efforts from 62-3 to 115-4, before Alan Flood added another 40 runs to put on 89 for victory. Neil Bibby returned the

best figures with 2-32. The previous day,

Clitheroe returned to win ning ways than k s to bowlers Josh Marquet and Mark Hargreaves. The Chatburn Road side

picked up maximum points as they edged out Ribbles dale League rivals Black burn Northern by 18 runs. The locals welcomed for

mer players Naeem Ashraf and Farouk Butt back to Chatburn Road for the first time since helping the club win the treble last sea son, but neither player made an impact on the game. Opening batsman Peter

Dibb (46), professional Michael Papps (16), Dan Glover (36) and captain Simon Coulter (23) top- scored for the locals as they were dismissed for 162. But it was the bowling

combination of Harg reaves and Marquet that sealed victory, ripping through the Blackburn order. Australian pace man

Marquet finished with 5- 68, while Hargreaves returned 3-38. On Saturday Clitheroe

are away a t Whalley, wick ets pitched at 1-30 p.m.
