Diana tickets to benefit hospice

TICKETS to the hottest concert of the new millennium are being auc tioned to raise money for the East Lancashire Hospice. It has a pair of tickets for the “Concert

for Diana”, to be held at the new Wemb ley Stadium on Sunday, July 1st, and fea turing the biggest names in pop. A local family acquired the tickets

from Clarence House as a way of saying thank you for the care given to a much loved husband and father who was cared for at the hospice when he died from can cer in July last year. In March, the family received a letter

from the Duchess of Cornwall which came with her heartfelt good wishes and a cheque towards the family’s fund-rais ing efforts. And, on May 4th, Harry Grayson, head of fund-raising at the hos pice, received an e-mail from 10 Downing Street with an attachment from Clarence House explaining that Princes William and Harry were delighted to offer two tickets for the “Concert for Diana”, which the hospice could use to raise funds. Stars lining up to take part in the con

cert include Elton John, Take That, Natasha Bedingfield, Duran Duran, Tom Jones, Rod Stewart, Status Quo, Bryan Ferry and Will Young.

The charity concert - marking the

10th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death and held on what would have been her 46th birthday - was an instant sell out and tickets are highly prized. All the stars are performing for free and proceeds from the televised concert will benefit charities supported by the late Princess. The East Lancashire Hospice is work

ing with local radio station 107FM The Bee to run the auction throughout next week, beginning on Monday, June 11th, and ending on Friday the 15th. Mr Grayson commented: "I would like

to take this opportunity of thanking the family for their foresight in writing to Clarence House and to thank Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall for the generous donation. I also want to extend our very special thanks to Their Royal Highness’s William and Harry for their generosity in providing the tickets for the concert in their dear mother’s memory, which I am sure will raise much- needed revenue for many worthwhile causes.” To take part in the auction, call the

ticket bid line on 01254 708107 and tune in to the radio to keep tabs on how bid ding is progressing. The deadline for the final bid is 5-50 p.m. on Friday June 15th, with the result announced at 6 p.m.

THE setting is East Berlin, the date November 1984. Five years before its downfall, the former East-German government ensured its claim to power with a ruthless system of control and surveillance. Party-loyalist Captain Gerd Wiesler hopes to boost

his career when given the job of collecting evidence against the playwright Georg Dreyman and his girl friend, the celebrated actress Christa-Maria Sieland. After all, the “operation” is backed by the highest polit ical circles. What he didn’t anticipate, however, was that sub

merging oneself into the world of the target also changes the surveillance agent. His immersion in the lives of others - in love, litera

INTERNATIONALLY acclaimed film and theatre actor Pete Postlethwaite is starring in a magical new production of William Shakespeare’s late great mas terpiece The Tempest a t Manchester’s Royal Exchange Theatre. He will take centre stage as Prospero, leading an

impressive cast in a production which continues the Royal Exchange’s 30th Anniversary Season. Shakespeare’s final play bursts into life as myste

rious magician Prospero conjures up a mighty storm. A ship flounders and leaves its passengers washed up on an enchanted island. Their miraculous survival leaves them to ask: “Why are we here?” “Who is Prospero?” And “What is the purpose of his magic powers?” Filled with beautiful poetry, surreal comedy and

deeply felt emotion, The Tempest, which is directed by Greg Hersov, transports its audience from the real world to a mystical place where something rich and strange lies in store. The production will run until July 7th. For ticket
