Black belt

o f card s _ o f success

A CLITHEROE karate centre is celebrating black belt success. Two members of the

Shutkokai club, which meets at Lee Carter’s, suc cessfully completed a three- and-a-half hour exam to gain the top belt. Bonnie Holmes and Rus

sel Piercy are the latest of instructor Andrew Holmes' students to gain a black belt. During the exam both

had set combinations to demonstrate, along with their fighting ability, impact work and set bunkai moves

to show with a partner. The club, which also

meets in Burnley, Colne and Hyndburn, has 35 members in the Ribble Valley aged from five to 50. Anyone interested in finding out more about

karate can either go along on either Wednesday or Fri day evenings between 6 and 7 p.m. or ring Lee Carter’s on 01200 424475. Our photograph shows

Danny sets new Whalley record

By Edward Lee

THERE can be no better time to post a new ama teur course record than in the first round of the Club Championship. And that is exactly what

Danny Liles did at Whalley, posting a 66 to beat the old course record, held by Andy Wray, by two shots. A second round of 78 saw

him claim the title by six shots from Craig Gornall. Stuart Herd returned to

winning ways, taking the June stableford with 38 points after a card play-off. Neil Pollard (37) took

first place in Division One from John Jobes (36). Steve Shoreman (38)

took top spot in Division Two from Stephen Brown (37) with John Harvey (38) claiming first place in Divi sion Three from Jonathan Palich (36). On Sunday, the club host

ed the Jubilee Open Four- ball Trophy. This time a card play-off

did not deprive Shoreman of victory as, partnered by Simon Pilbin (Mytton Fold), he took first place with 46 points. Mytton Fold's Malcolm

Heyworth and Mark Green (45) took second place after a card play-off with Alan Strange and Andrew Har vey from Whalley. Former Whalley Presi

dent Les Dearden had an excellent individual round and, with contributions from partner Peter Palich, took fourth place, after another card play-off, with 44 points. Roger Altham and Craig Gornall took the gross prize (73). Alex Rigby stole the

headlines at Clitheroe’s Invitation Day on Sunday. Partnering guest Robert

Brown (Darwen), Rigby and his eight iron scored an ace on the 143-yard par-

three fifth hole to earn him self a good prize for his first- ever hole in one. The Nightingales are on

song at the moment. Club member Paul took

second prize in the Tom Morris Putter 36-holer on Saturday. And brother Andrew,

from Rishton Golf Club, teamed-up with Clitheroe’s Peter Greaves to claim first prize in the Invitation. Andrew took a five-shot

handicap reduction the pre vious week, but, with the in-form Greaves, scored an impressive 46 points to fin ish three-shots clear of a trio on 43. Clitheroe’s Steve Credie

found a useful partner in Rochdale’s Mark Jones to claim second spot after cards with Brian Edmond son and John Kirk (Stony- hurst). Michael Heaps, not for the first time, visited the prize table with playing partner G. Stobbart (Black burn). Malcolm Brown and Darwen’s Andy Walker were well-pleased when their 42 points took fifth places from captain elect Andrew Walmsley and Andrew Samuels (Burnley). Peter Pedder’s 68 earned

him top spot in the mid week medal, but it was a close call as Peter Catlow finished on the same score, only to be beaten on cards. Scott Thompson and the enthusiastic Gordon Roth- well both had nett 70s, Thompson getting the nod. The 36-hole Tom Morris

Putter takes place over two weekends and, unfortunate ly, the first round leaders had other commitments on day two. Andrew Wetton came

good to pick up the Divi sion One prize with a sparkling nett 67, two shots clear of Alex Taylor, who had a three-shot advantage over Dean Braithwaite. Jim Sprint took Division Two from Dave Warner,

who polished up his game to finish a shot ahead of Jim Gibbon. Paul Traynor was on fire

for the second leg, and his nett 65 added to a first round 73 gave him top spot. The left him four shots

clear of the aforementioned Nightingale (142). Dave Foster showed con

sistency with two 72s for third place ahead of Michael Heaps, John Paw- son and Garry Thompson. The experienced Denis Greenup took the gross prize. The Founder Captain's

Trophy at Mytton Fold was fiercely contested. Following a card play-off,

club president David Harg reaves just took the honours with a score of 83-14-69 from Graham Plant (90-21-69). The divisional prizes were

also close, with Mark Green (83-13-70) taking Division One from Chris Chadwick (75-5-70), and Division Two went to Paul Hayton (91-19-72) from John Atkinson (87-15-72), also on a card play-off. Nick Avino (98-28-70)

just ousted doubles partner Chris Czyzyk (94-23-71) to take the Third Division honours. Karen Stanworth (74)

won the Jane Panter Shield at Clitheroe by a shot from both Sue Johnson and Chris Stokes. And Daphne Dawson

(76-7-69) was the clear win ner of the Margaret Light- foot Trophy at Whalley. Marilyn Bulcock (100-

28-72) was runner-up ahead of Vivien Birtwell (99-24- 75). New junior member

Scott Redfern is settling in nicely at Clitheroe and the five-handicapper’s net t 76 earned him second place in the junior medal. William Kenyon posted

a winning 71, leaving the keen Harry Lambert to fin ished third on 77.
