AN early morning phone call to the home of 21-year-old Pamela J. A. Wilkinson, of Hawthorne Place, Clitheroe, from an American multi-millionaire staying at the Dorchester Hotel, London, invited her to an audition to find a Jane Eyre to play opposite Errol Flynn in a forthcoming Broadway production. The call came from the American grocery magnate Hunting don Hartford III, the man helping Vivien Leigh to save St James's Theatre. Wakened by her mother Mrs Greta

Wilkinson, Pamela spoke to Mr Hartford, who asked her to send a photograph and copy of her handwriting - he studies graphology as a hobby. Last year Pamela had played the lead

in her mother's production of Jane Eyre in Clitheroe Parish Church school and pho tographs and cuttings from the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times, of herself and the cast, were sent to Mr Hartford through the Daily Express, by Mr Kenneth Tay lor, of Downham, who played Rochester. , • The Clitheroe catalyst factory of

The fifth series of “Strictly Come Danc

ing” - or “Strictly” as we lovers of the show refer to it - is just days away. If you have ever read my blog -

www.clitheroeadvertiser.co.uk - you will have some idea of just how big a fan I am of this show. ; I love it all, the glitz, the glamour, the music, the costumes, the judges and the fact that we can sit down as a family to watch the show, without worrying about the children having nightmares later or about the use of bad language etc. etc. As I ’ve said before, and as I will say

again - “Strictly” epitomises good family entertainment. There is no pretension of people trying

to be something they are obviously not o r ' a plethora of would-be stars showcasing their lack of talent. Instead you get people who have

A s I s e e i t . . . b y N a t a l i e C o x

already made their name doing something else, having a bit of fun entertaining the rest of us. Since learning that the new series was

scheduled to start, I’ve checked my social calendar to ensure as many Saturday nights are kept as free as possible, as you simply have to watch this show live. But I have just learnt that I am going

to have to clear Sunday nights too. As, according to the BBC website, the results show is being moved to Sunday evening. Despite being a massive “Strictly” fan

(sadly, even as I say the words, I can hear the theme tune playing in my head) I

think trying to squeeze seven nights new TV out of the programme is bit too much. In my opinion it would be best to keep it all on one night -

live show, followed an

hour or so later by the results. Even in the old days (ie last series) you

could get a seven-day fix of “Strictly" with the edited re-run on Sunday evenings and “Strictly Come Dancing - It Takes Two” every weekday night for the real anorak. I am sure it all comes down to trying to

attract viewing figures, but why the con stant need to change a winning format? That aside on Saturday evening we

“Strictly” buffs got our first taste of what is to come over the next month or two, with the competition proper due to start this weekend. And I am not ashamed to admit I will

be sitting there come Saturday evening, with a glass of something sparkling to hand, ready to live my ballroom dreams.

FEARS of another whooping cough out break in the Ribble Valley in two or three years if more parents do not have their children immunised were this week expressed by the District Medical Officer, Dr D. G. Williams. “Less than half the new-born babies are now being immunised and the number needs to be between 70 and 80% to keep the disease under con trol,” he said at the time. • Say no to strangers... that was the

message being given by police this week to hundreds of Ribble Valley schoolchildren as the half-term holiday approached. Offi cers visited schools at Barrow and Whal- ley, armed with a 15-minute film which highlighted the dangers that surrounded and threatened children. They were also planning to give talks to youngsters at Downham, Chatburn, Grindleton and Clitheroe. • The Moorcock Inn, Waddington, was

bought by a 32-year-old Lancaster busi nessman who aimed to put it well and truly on the map. The businessman, who did not want to reveal his name or the price he paid for the hotel, planned cabaret with live acts, an extensive restau rant and a disco. • A public meeting to gauge interest in

the proposed building of a £ 220,000 sports hall at Clitheroe’s Roefield site was going to be held later in the month.

others and to do nothing our selves. And yet our communities

are simply groups of us. In Saint Paul’s second letter to Timothy, he makes it abundantly clear that “God’s gift was not a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and self control” . God has given us the power to

stand up and face the evils we meet in our lives, whether of international terrorism or the abuse from youths in the streets. All very well in theory, you

might say, but what do I do about it right now? Perhaps the first thing is to pray about it, to

. deepen the spirit of God within me, that the power and love and self-control is more active with

in us. We must pray for increased

holiness so that we demonstrate by lives of love, self-control, self lessness that our way is the way of love, not hate, the way of Jesus, not Satan. We must join together with

all men and women of good who will oppose violence and desire peace in the many organisations and societies dedicated to this cause of peace and justice. Finally, and perhaps most dif

ficult of all, we need to enter into dialogue with the violent, the terrorists, the carriers of knives and guns, the vandals, to speak with epathy and under standing with them about how they have come to be as they are. A constant barrage of criti cism and condemnation will only entrench them in their atti

tudes. We can start with trou blesome young people in Clitheroe: they are not from another planet. Their background is very

similar to ours. But their expe riences of life have had a differ ent effect on them - the quality of their parenting, their educa tion, their lack of jobs. They need our help and understand

ing. Finally, we must not lose

heart or live in fear. We know that Jesus is with us and in the end will conquer death, sin and evil. We must always keep this thought in the forefront of our minds.
