ENGLAND had yet to win the World Cup the last time • Clitheroe made it through to the third qualifying round of the FA Cup. Neil Reynolds and Pete

Smith’s men matched that 1965 achievement on Satur day thanks to an impressive all-round performance against Spennymoor Town. Two goals apiece for

Gary Jackson and Will Exton, coupled with tine individual strikes by Sam Heap, Craig Sargeson, Dave Dempsey and Ryan Fisher, saw the Blues overpower their Northern League First Division opponents to book their place. Goals haven’t been free-

flowing in the league this season for the side, but the Blues blew away the cob webs with this display. Pace was the winning

ingredient for the Shaw- bridge side, as Heap was on

the end of everything, with strike partner Jackson also possessing too much speed

Spennymoor struck a sec

drew 0-0 with Nantwich Town on Saturday, only to overcome their UniBond opponents at the second attempt, to host the Blues on Saturday, October 13th.

^ ON Sunday, the finals of the Floodlit Singles took ^ place atSabden Bowling Club, before the green was

shut for winter. A very good crowd was in attendance to see C. Livesey

beat 2005 and 2006 champion J. Metters 21-7 in the final. Livesey had earlier beaten D. 'Walker 21-5 in the semi

final, while Metters saw off J. Barlow 21-11. Losing quarter-finalists were S. Gale, J. Whittaker, P.

Brett and V. O’Donnell. Event organiser Alan Whalley thanked all who attended,

and the members of Sabden BC who had assisted in the smooth running of the competition.

The club president presented all the prizes and the cup to the winner. All raffle prizes were claimed.

Thrilling finals at Whalley Five-goal derby success By Edward Lee

THERE was a thrilling cli max to the Postlethwaite Cup at Whalley Golf Club. Danny Liles made a

birdie two at the 18th hole to force the gairie into a sudden-death play-off. There he conceded shots

at each of the first two holes to John Haworth, but man aged to stay level as he did after the 21st hole. But the 22nd proved one

conceded shot too many for Liles, and Haworth emerged as the winner. Roy Ellis and Rob Hilton

were also forced into extra holes in the final of the Fourball Knockout, eventu ally winning at the 19th against Craig Gornall and Dave Wetton. And in the President’s

Putter Final, Andy Wray made a two at the 18th to secure success alongside his father, Paul, against Colin Elliott and Trevor Thorn- her. The latter made up for

the disappointment of los ing out in the final by win

ning the Brandreth Trophy with a card of 83-9-74. Graham Hill returned a

score of 89-19-67 to win the Ultima Trophy as Andy Wray carded 77 for the gross prize. Division One prizes went

to Nick Preston (81-10-71) and Dave Wetton (83-12- 71); Chris Thompson (85- 17-68) and Mark Tuley (83- 13-70) were the pick of Division Two and Eric Lord (91-19-72) and Andrew Walker (95-19-76) topped Division 'Three. Three dropped shots on

the last three holes did not stop Clitheroe’s Andrew Bennie winning the Jubilee Plate on Saturday. The six-handicapper held out by a shot from the quar-

•tet of Mike Ainsworth, Dave Foster, Mark Ash worth and Phil Leaver with Rob Andrew returning 75 for the gross prize. Sunday’s Fourball saw

the formidable Malcolm Brown and Ted Speak run away with the top prize with a healthy 45 points. Wayne Townley and Derek Marsh posted 41

points for second spot, just one shot ahead of old favourites George Stoddart and Ray Taylor. Gary Speak got the bet

ter of Carl Drinkwater in the semi-final of the men’s knockout competition and then overcame Dave McKenzie in the final to win by a narrow margin. Gill Eddlestone incurred

a two-shot handicap reduc tion after returning 39 points in the Ladies’ Stable- ford at Clitheroe. Barbara Thornton was

runner-up with Maureen Cox in third place. Jean Ddarden was a one-

shot winner of the LGU Medal at Whalley. She carded 98-21-77 to

win from Julie Stephenson (97-19-78), who took second on the card from Joyce Andrew (96-18-78). Back at Clitheroe and

Harry Lambert continued his downward spiral in the handicap lists. . His nett 68 in the junior medal was two shots too good for Robert Ashworth as Jack Mercer returned a creditable 72 for third prize.

Clilheroe l i e ................. 5 Blackburn Norlhern . . .0 CLITHEROE Hockey Club won their second Pre miership game of the season against local rivals Black- bum Northern on Saturday. The locals came out of

the blocks with purpose, with strong passing moves across the defence and up into midfield. The first half was goal

less, despite Blackburn get ting the ball in the net five minutes from the break, only to have it ruled-out for an infringement. In the second half,

Clitheroe were rewarded within the first minute when Worthington provid ed O’Donnell with a pin point pass to play a first time strike at the keeper, who saved well, parrying the ball to her left, where Hadfield was on hand to slap the ball home. Clitheroe grew in confi

dence and mopped up all the loose balls, and within three minutes, O’Donnell linked up with Hadfield and Horsfall to sprint clear of the Blackburn defence.

round the keeper and strike home a second goal. Again Blackburn took

the centre pass, and it was intercepted by Box-Mor- ton, who found Hadfield, and she skilfully beat the defender and crossed the ball to O’Donnell, whose shot came back off the keeper for Horsfall to slot home. Blackburn withheld the

Clitheroe pressure for the next 15 minutes, forcing a couple of penalty comers of their own, but solid defence from Hough, Dugdale, Allen and skipper Laverty,' with some fantastic saves from Simpson, kept Clitheroe’s 3-0 lead intact. The local ladies were not

done, as Worthington hit home a clinical penalty cor ner in the 56th minute. And to wrap up all three

points, a final blow was dealt when Hadfield struck home her second of the game from a penalty comer. Soulhport 2nds.............1 Clilheroe HC2nds. . . .1 CLITHEROE’S first away game of the season reaped a •fine draw.

The locals started well,

retaining possession and making excellent penetrat ing moves on the Southport defence. Seven minutes in, Steff

Teece made an excellent run up the centre of the pitch from the halfway line, evad ing two Southport defend ers to draw the keeper off her line and pass within the D for Pauline Moorby to slot home. Southport made many

attempts to equalise before half-time, but Clitheroe took their lead into the break. Clitheroe had their

chances to score more goals but the Southport goal keeper and defence cutting out many attempts and moves, and, frustratingly, in the last couple minutes of the game, a short corner was given against the locals, which was cleared, only to have the umpire decide on a re-take, whoch produced a leveller. Player-of-the-match was

Becky Whitwell for an excellent game, with great, accurate passing.

Wolves progress in cup

Clilheroe Wolves Under 15s................................. 3 Poullon ....................... 1 WOLVES came from behind to reach to LFA Youth Cup third round. The visitors took the lead

on the break with a long- range shot. From the penalty spot,

Max Harrison brought the Wolves level before half time. ' Dane Meyler was on hand to give the locals the

■lead, and when the keeper was unable to hold a shot from Sam Langford, Harri son put home the rebound. Barrowford Cellic . . . . .5 Wolves Under 9 Reds . . .0 WOLVES continue to work hard, but couldn't turn their chances into goals. Goalkeeper Ben Ibhotson

was man-of-the-match. Wolves Under 11s Red . .7 Clayton Park Rangers . .2 CLITHEROE stretched their unbeaten run to eight games with a convincing win..

A hat-trick for George -, ,

Bicknell, a brace for Matthew Farnsworth and

back of a 3-0 victory over local rivals Clitheroe Wolves Blue, which put the Reds second in the league. Brierfield Celtic............7 Wolves Under 11s..........0

IN an evenly balanced first half. Wolves did not convert their chances and conceded two late goals. And in a luckless second

half, everything that could go \vrong, did. Wolves came close on

several occasions but failed to get the ball in the net as Brierfield took their chances well. Man-of-the-match was

Ruben Hirst. Wolves Under 8 s .......... 7 Accrington Stanley Yel

ous free-kick, and they increased the lead through captain Jack Orrell before the break. The second period saw

Clitheroe dominate, with well-taken goals for Ewan Jackson and Will Lancaster to increase the lead. Before a further goal

from Charlie Dewhurst and a double strike from Frankie Jackson gave the young Wolves side a com fortable and well-deserved

, win. Wolves Under 7s...........7

Akzo Yellow.................0 THE young Wolves bounced back from defeat at the hands of Akzo Green rfh'' the prevoius week to inflict a comprehensive defeat over the Yellow team. Goals came from

Matthew King (2), Thomas Smith (2), and a goal a piece from Oliver Pallister, Sam Pickles and Joe Briggs. The score could have

been greater had it not been for the players going for glory rather than passing to their better placed team mates!
