FO OTBALL-playing Clitheroe GP Dr John Zak proved a safe pair of hands at the 2007 World Medical Football Championships in Australia last month. Trading' his post at.
Clitheroe Health Centre for an appointment in goal with the British Medical Team, the Pendleside prac titioner helped the side to third in the annual eight- team competition. This is the second time

Dr Zak has kept goal on the world stage, having first linked up-with the fledgling team little over 20 months ago to enter last year’s com petition in Germany. The. team finished last in
that event, so to beat Ger many 2-0 and Australia 3-1 to face reigning champions Brazil in the semi-finals 15 months later, just proves how far the team has come. And what’s more, tha t
decisive game for a place in the final went to dreaded penalties, as the British team held the South Ameri cans to a 1-1 drawl
Unfortunately, ?5r; the
Clitheroe doctor couldn’t do much about the spot kicks as Brazil won 5-3 on penal ties to reach the final, suc cessfully retaining their title by beating Catalonia 4-3 on penalties following another 1-1 draw. But Britain did enough
to take third spot, by beat ing hosts Australia 3-2 in the play-off.

league win on Tuesday night - and a history-mak ing performance in the FA Cup on Saturday - have made for an electric atmosphere in the Shaw- bridge dressing room. The Blues’ have netted
CLITHEROE’S first
15 goals in their last three games, addressed their league performance with a rallying 3-2 win over Mossley, and made the third qualifying round for the first time in 42 years. Now manager Neil
Reynolds wants to take that spirit into more cup competitions, starting with Saturday’s FA Tro phy game at home to high flying Ossett Albion. He said: “We’re all fit
amazing how a dressing “The turning point was continued on page
for the FA Trophy and looking to have another good run. Just on the back of Tuesday night, i t ’s
scratching our heads not long ago about where we were going with the sea son, people were making comments on the terraces and on websites, but where are the doubters now?
More midweek mayhem!
Clitheroe F C ............ 3 Mossley.............. .. ..2 IT'S been a long time com ing, but Clitheroe scooped their first league win of the season against Moss ley on. Tuesday night thanks to a last-minute Paul Osbourne strike and a gamble that paid off. Tuesday night games
have been eventful to say the least this season. The last four fixtures have seen floodlight failure, succes sive cup games go to extra time and penalties, and now, to add to the list, an injury to the referee call ing for a replacement from the crowd and a 20-minute delay to the game. The Blues were 2-1
down when the man in black pulled up with a calf strain after 60 minutes played, and if a qualified Mossley fan hadn't stepped up to run the line, and Clitheroe agreed to it, then the locals would have had to forfeit the game. So when second half
substitute Will Exton equalised, five minutes from the end, and skipper Osbourne stuck the ball away moments from the
whistle, Clitheroe were overjoyed at pulling off the implausible. Clitheroe had started
the game well and truly in control, taking the lead through Sam Heap as early as the fourth minute thanks to a defence-split ting pass from Joel Byrom and a clinical finish from the forward. However, a contentious
second half got off to a bad start when Mossley equalised through Gareth Hamlet, the striker's shot taking a wicked deflection off Gregg Anderson to beat James Mann at his nearpost. 1 . Russ Clarke was kicked
while on the floor in the subsequent moments after this goal, and, along with his assailant, received a yellow card for the trouble. Then Osbourne was
stamped on in full view of the linesman only to see it go unnoticed - so the refer ee being forced off injured
.with 30 minutes to play proved no bad thing. But before Mr Brabin
limped from the field, Mossley netted once more from a corner, the initial
THP3
effort tipped on to the bar by Mann only for the sec ond attempt to be tucked away by Lee Connor to
- piit the visitors in control. . The final 30 minutes could have seen Mossley easily extend their lead by two more goals but for Clitheroe keeper Mann, but chances were also missed at the opposite end.
Ryan Fisher had a great
chance to draw level after being put in by Heap, only to fire over, Exton had a good shout for a penalty judged outside the area, and David Dempsey curled a 25-yard strike against the bar. However, thanks to
Byrom finding Exton in space and the striker hav ing two attempts to find the back of the net, Clitheroe pulled it back to 2-
2. Renewed confidence
was seen in the side in the final few minutes; player- manager Neil Reynolds was on as Clitheroe's final substitute, and after sus tained pressure, Osbourne headed home following a Byrom corner.

room can change, it was like we’d won the FA Cup. “We’ve got goals in the
side and I ’m looking for ward to Ossett Albion. They’re a good side and i t ’s going to be a tough game. They’re flying at the moment but the fact we’ve scored 15 goals in three games will keep them on their toes.” He added: “We were
against Colwyn Bay where we showed charac ter, and we took that in to Saturday, where our attacking football was sec ond to none. I’ve been say ing all season that some one was going to get a hid ing, and it just happened to be Spennymoor.. “We’ve got Harrogate
Town in the next round, but I wasn’t concerned about who we played as just to get there is an achievement. We’ve got nothing to fear and hope fully we will pull off a result.” Tuesday night’s league
ley were a big physical side who kept on lobbing balls in to the box, which we defended well. “The two goals we con ceded were sloppy but we
win showed their dogged ability to get a result against the odds. Reynolds said: “Moss-
John races to European glory
By Adrian Capstick
CLITHEROE’S John Holden and passenger Andy Winkle were crowned European Side car Champions in Germany on Sunday.
The motorbike and sidecar
racers topped their class in the final stage of the eight-race, four-stage competition to scoop the F2 challenge title, as well as finish second overall in the FI against much more powerful bikes. Riding his Suzuki 600,
Holden finished fifth in both the six-lap and nine-lap race at Ffohburg to take the hon ours, following his previous performances at tracks in Ire land, England and elsewhere in Germany since June. The British pair were the
fastest 600cc outfit a t the track and across the champi onship to take the F2, and
despite finishing behind four lOOOcc bikes in the final stage, they also proved the second fastest overall partnership in Europe, behind fellow Brits Ken Knapton and Jason Miller’s lOOOcc Suzuki. The local rider has had a
season to remember, as this title follows his best-ever fin ishes at the Centenary Isle of Man TT in June, where he achieved second in both Bavaria Sidecar A and B races, as well as second in the eight-round FSRA British F2 Sidecar Championship. And he would have finished
British champion too, but for a renegade stone.
Holden said: “I t ’s been a.
fantastic season, what with the Isle of Man TT and the European Championship. “We were leading the
British Championship by 26 points going in to the final race at Cadwell Park until
mechanical problems forced us out.
“A stone got into the
engine through the air box and damaged a valve, there was nothing we could do about it, but we still fin ished second overall.” Holden added: “I’d like
to thank all the people who have supported me throughout the year. Dave and Alice Walmsley, Proflex Shock Absorbers, David Johnston Builders, Tony Holmes Engine Tuning, James Alpe Ltd and all my family and friends.” John is pictured with his motorbike and sidecar, (s)
