SUNDAY saw the grand opening of Clitheroc Rugby Club’s clubhouse by the Lord Lieutenant of the County, Lord.Shuttleworth JP. The building has been in use for a few seasons now, but as the club has

just entered it’s 30th anniversary year, it was felt a good time to mark the occasion. Pictured (I-r) Lady Shuttleworlh, Colin Silcock, Lord Shuttleworth and Andrew Thornber. (S2280907/1)

FOLLOWING their first win of the season, a 34-13 success over Chorley the pre vious weekend, Clitheroe travelled to Carnforth in good heart. Any win at Camforth is to

be savoured, as Clitheroe’s results at this ground have been less than impressive in recent seasons. Glitheroe started with a

bang, immediately camped out in the Camforth 22. Then, after a protracted

Skiers land title double

PENDLE Ski Squad won the North West Ski Federa tion Dry Slope Champi onships on their home slope nearSabden. This success follows on the

back of an All England Championship-winning per formance in Sunderland at the beginning of the month. Pendle had several trophy

winners in the special slalom event. ' There were wins for Dougie Whitelock in the Under 10 males, Marcus Orrell in Under 16 males, Katie Adams in the Under 19 females and Andy Roose in the Under 19 males Brad Morgan finished sec

ond to Roose, and Martin Lomax took the over 50s’ male accolade. Fourteen teams contested

the team relay event, pro gressing'through league and then knockout stages, to a final between Pendle’s first team and Ski-Art A. This promised to be an

exciting encounter, but in the end Pendle ran out clear win ners by completing two out of the three legs ahead of their, rivals. In all, Pendle skiers

scooped 13 first places of the 19 on offer, including those for their youngest racers Josef Huppach (5) and Cor- rine Side (6) in the Under 8s categories, as well as overall North West champions Emily Whitelock (13) and Andy Roose (16). Anyone interested in join

ing this award-winning team should contact Pendle Ski Club on 01200 425222 or see the website www.pendleski- club.org.uk

series of close-quarter drives, lock forward Ted Thornber burst clear and galloped past the defence to score his sec ond in as many weeks, under the posts. Martin Lafranceschina was on hand with extras. If Clitheroe thought they were on for an easy after

noon, they were gravely mis taken when the home side pulled a score back straight away. The conversion was

missed, but shortly after a penalty was conceded, put ting Camforth 8-7 up at the turn round. Clitheroe were undaunted

and knew they had enough to score more tries. After some good interpass

ing down the right hand side among the backs, the ball was taken almost up to the try line, then just when it looked like the move may run out of steam, up popped veteran loose forward Ralph Rigby, to take an easy scor ing pass. The conversion was

missed, but with their tails up, Clitheroe pressed again. This time i t was Lafranceschina who cut

through the defence and used his long reach to ground the ball.

' He was on target with the

extras and also with a penal ty shortly afterwards. At 8-22 , Clitheroe

thought they had the game wrapped up. Not so. Camforth refused

to lie down and a loose pass in the Clitheroe back line allowed them in for a deserved score. With the conversion over,

i t was the Littlemoor men who had to survive a tense final 10 minutes, running the clock down with some leg sapping driving mauls. On Saturday it is derby

time a t Littlemoor, when Cone and Nelson are the vis itors, in another tough exam ination for the town team.
