BOSS LOOKS BACK AT

with your sports team of Edvvard Lee, Chris Boden, Phil.Simpson and Adrian By Adrian Capstick

CLITHEROE’S end-of- season presentation night saw the honours shared throughout the team. .Joel Byrom edged the

most awards with the man agers' player-of-the-season, p a l of the season and lead ing goalscorer - a remark able achievement given he only joined the club at the end of .January. But a number of trophies

went to vice-captain Gregg Anderson for both his over all endeavour and committ ment at the centre of defence, as well as the come dy value he brought the fans in his quest for a goal. Both the .Supporters'

player of the season acco lade and the Smilie award for the most memorable moment of the .season went

his way. Partner in crime Kris

Matthews, the other half to what player-managers Peter Smith and Neil Reynolds called the "best defensive partnership in the league", was presented with the players' player of the season having earlier announced that he had played his last game for the Blues due to his move to Derby. . Anthony Daniels pipped

Will Exton to the young player of the season for his almost ever-present place in the side having swapped from the centre of midfield to full-back without issue. And both Craig Sargseon

and captain Simon Garner were acknowledged by the Blues in the Corner. Off the pitch, gateman

Jan Rimmer received the clubman of the season award and groundsman

Keith Lord was acknowl edged for the sterling work he has done with the pitch this season, for the first team, Blackburn Rovers Ladies and all the other teams that have played at Shawbridge. Clilheroe ........................5 Shepshed Dynamo . . . .0 CLITHEROE capped off the 2006-07 UniBond league season with a resounding victory over Shepshed Dynamo. Two goals apiece from

Joel BjTom and Ryan Fish er, following Chris Ward's opener, guaranteed the club its joint-highest finish in the First Division, but with a superior 60 points. The first half saw the

Blues dominate from the off to go 4-0 up by half-time. Ward was put through on

goal inside five minutes to see the striker lob the

advancing keeper with an instinctive effort from the edge of the area to set the scene. Byrom went close to

adding a second minutes later only, to catch England Masters keeper Dale Belford full-on in the face with a powerful strike. And Kris Matthews went

close at the back post from a corner. But then, almost straight

away from the other corner, Byrom curled in an effort at the near post that looked to take the slimmest of touch es from a Shepshed defend er

So just 10 minutes in and

two goals up, Clitheroe were rampant. More was to fol low on the half hour when Craig Sargeson threaded a ball through to Fisher, and with one deft touch to take control and another to

stroke home, the Shaw bridge crowd was treated to the shaggy-haired player's Rod Hull and Emu celebra tion. However, the best goal of

the game came from Bjrom just before half-time when Russ McKenna played a ball over the top and, in one swooping move at pace, the former Blackburn Rovers player took it down and rifled home on the half vol ley.

Further attempts were

seen, but just one more strike from the head of Fisher fell for the side after the break, and again it came from a Byrom corner. The managers' player-of-

the-season and golden boot winner whipped the ball in, which the puppeteer-mim- icing midfielder glanced home. Sadly this was players'

ANDREW Wray set a new ama teur course record of 68 at Whal- ley on Saturday. Playing in the Spring Trophy,

his nett score of 65 was also good enough to see him at the head of the field. Paul Wray, Andrew's father,

.scored 78-8r70 to take first place in Division One after a card play off with Roger Altham (75-5-70). J^at Crawford (87-18-70) took

first place in Division Two after another card play-off with John Jobes (83-13-70). A third card play-off was

required to sort out the placing's in Division Three, with Dan Rodgers (96-24-72) edging Stuart Herd (92-20-72) into second place. Andrew's euphoria did not last

long however. As an avid Burnley FC fan, he played for the Clarets' side the fol

lowing day in the annual Clarets v Rovers match. For the second consecutive year,

it was the Rovers side which pre vailed by 3 'A points to 2 ‘A thanks, in part, to some excellent team selection by stand-in captain Rob Hilton. A number of Whalley members

recently spent a couple of days at Rudding Park near Harrogate. Played between eight-man teams in Ryder Cup format, it was the team lead by Philip Hilton, father of the aforementioned Rob, which prevailed over former Whalley captain Roy Broomhead's team - Gary Clough holing the winning putt in the on the 18th green in the final match. The Pharman Cup is always a

highly-prestigious and eagerly- awaited competition at Mytton Fold and this year was no excep tion. The blustery conditions made

scoring difficult over the two days of medal play, but, despite that, there were some exceptional per formances. Mark Davidson fol lowed up a superb first day 64 with a solid second round of 71 to take the trophy by four clear shots with a combined total of 135. Neil Osliffe excelled on the sec

ond day with a best of the day 67 to add to his overnight 72 - his overall 139 taking second place with a score that would have won in most years. The daily prizes were taken by

Mark Slater (83-19-64) and Paul Barrett (73-8-65) on Saturday, and Ray Standring (74-5-69) and Jeff Leathered (93-24-69) on Sun day, with divisional prizes going to David Clegg (80-12-68), Duncan Rogers (86-15-71) and David Hal- sall (97-23-74) on Saturday. Sunday's divisional winners

were Frank Tunstall (86-14-72), captain Tony Cross (89-15-74)

- . S

and Jim Bridge (96-23-73) in Divisions One,Two and Three respectively. "The previous weekend Mytton

Fold held the ELGA Handicap qualifier and Steve Cunliffe (85- 17-68) emerged victorious after a card play off with Paul Earnshaw (82-14-68). Divisional awards went to

Garry Davies and Ray Standring in Division One, Gary Ashton'and Matt Walsh in the Second Divi sion and Gary Keogh and Chris Czyzyk in the third tier. Cunliffe, Earnshaw, Davies and

Ashton will represent Mytton Fold in the ELGA Final at Black burn on May 12th. Clitheroe members were also in

action in the ELGA Handicap qualifier. Ian Lambert (88-20-68) led

them home and also topped Divi sion Two ahead of Steve Credie (84-14-70), captain Richard

Baker (84-13-71) and Dean Braithwaite (84-13-71). Carl Drinkwater and Gary

Speak both carded 73-4-69 in Division One, the former getting the nod after a card play-off. Tim Stanley (76-7-69) was third ahead Ralph Postlethwaite (78-6-72). A. Clarke and G. Cartledge (90-

18-72) won the LUGC Foursomes qualifier by the narrowest of mar gins from J. Wetton and C. Mus- toe (83-10.5-72.5). Lauraine Wall (34) won the

Duckworth Cup at Clitheroe by a point from Tracey Bentley and Sue Madden. Lady members at Whalley con

tested a five-club team competi tion with Anne Prior, Julie Stephenson and Fran Gierat scor ing 74 points to emerge victorious. Lesley Lohou and Jennifer

Eastwood (70) were second ahead of Janet Sharp, Bridget Rees and Jean Tasker (69),.
