AMBITIOUS plans are in hand for the formation of a Clitheroe Jazz Club. Local Jazz fans Paul Ellis
and Geoff Jackson are holding an open meeting at the St Mary’s Centre, in Church Street, at 7-30 p.m. on Tuesday', May 15th, in anticipation of a groundswell of support for the initiative. ' Local jazz pianist, Eric
Ainsworth, will be playing during the evening and the centre’s bar will be open. Paul and Geoff will be
proposing the formation of a .lazz Club and are looking for enthusiasts to sign up for membership on the evening. They will also be presenting the idea of regu lar monthly jazz sessions to the meeting, and will be
confirming the first evening gig for Saturday, June 23rd, at the St Mary’s Centre. Paul and Geoff have been able to sign up two popular North West bands for this date. They are “Harold Salisbury & Pinto Beans” and “The James Harg reaves Quartet”, both of whom will be appearing at the Wigan Jazz Festival in July. It is hoped that regular
monthly jazz sessions will follow the June event. Anyone wanting to find

Wine bar wars in town? by Natalie Cox
COULD wine bar wars be com ing to Clitheroe? Work is almost complete to trans
form the former Ethos Gallery build ing in York Street into the latest Olive Press bistro for local super chef Paul Heathcote. Now, a planning application to
change part of Clitheroe’s Nat West Bank building, just yards away, into a wine bar and cafe has also been given the green light. This means the two businesses will sit side by side on York Street.
The proposal for the bank site in
York Street was given the go-ahead on Thursday by Kibble Valley’s
Planning and Development Com mittee. Plans to change the use of the
upper floor offices, once home to the Enterprise Agency, to a wine bar and cafe with extensions and a lift shaft were both granted, as was the sepa rate application to install the lift. A report to councillors stated that
the area in question is part of the first floor and second floor, with the remainder of the building continuing to be used as a bank. The external appearance of the building would
not be altered, except for the addi tion of a lift shaft on the York Street elevation.
The report continued: “It is envis
aged that the wine bar will be open in the evening and the cafe open in the daytime to serve drinks with some pre-prepared snacks. It is not the intention to serve meals, or cook food on the premises.” It added: “It is considered that the
proposal will contribute to the town centre’s vitality” and that it “would not add significantly” to the “exist ing night time background noise”. A report from the planning officer relating to the lift application

Spellbound through
glass! “THKOUGH a stained glass win dow” was the title of the talk enjoyed by Clitheroe Civic Society. Guest speaker
Margaret Edwards informed a well attended meeting about the different types of stained glass seen in buildings and illustrated her talk with slides. Sue Holden and
John Lambert will speak at the next meeting on Clitheroe’s old street names. The venue for
Monday, May 14th, has been changed to the meeting room at Clitheroe Library. The meeting
starts at 7-30 p.m. and visitors are welcome. There is a
charge of £2 to include refresh ments.
HEARS QUALITY DISCOUNT FLOORING
described an original scheme for “a fully glazed structure” as being an “incongruous feature” and “detri mental” to the street scene and char acter of the building. However, a revised submission
which is “predominantly stone with a stone parapet roof on the top floor” could not be seen as a “visual ly discordant feature”. Councillors gave both plans the
green light subject to a number of conditions, one relating to the restricted use of the premises - between the hours of 8 a.m. and mid night, and another which states that it should only be serviced between 7
and 9 a.m. Monday to Saturday. © In a separate application. So
Bar, in King Street was seeking ret rospective consent for the use of a garage as a general store, to use an area under a balcony as an external seating area, as well as using an open area as additional external seating. Comments from three letters of
objection were included in a report to committee which raised concerns about increased noise disturbance and problems with vehicles unload ing. Although the application was rec
ommended for approval, councillors refused the plan.
