AJ^ elderly Whalley woman was found hanging from a silk scarf secured to her kitchen door handle. An inquest heard members
of Hilda Robinson’s family believed she had been dis tressed by the theft of money from her by another woman. The tribunal heard that 79-
year-old Mrs Robinson also name'd the woman in notes left before she took her own life, but a police inquiry had not resulted in any charges against the other woman.
Mrs Robinson lived in shel
tered accommodation in Rid- dings Lane, Whalley, and staff went round to check on her when she didn’t respond to her morning call on a Monday morning.
The weekend newspapers
were still behind the door, which was slightly ajar, although subsequent inquiries showed the door had been locked when the papers were delivered on Saturday and Sunday.

A THEATRE workshop has been used to raise local awareness about homelessness. Youngsters from a number of Ribble
Valley schools took part in the event which was run by the Cragrats theatre group. The event was organised by Rachel
Stott, Ribble Valley Borough Council’s Housing Strategy Officer, after statistics showed that a significant number of indi viduals who found themselves homeless last year were in their teenage years. In a bid to address the issues the council
commissioned the Cragrats team to work with Year 10 youngsters from Clitheroe Royal Grammar School, Rowland High School and Ribblesdale High School Tech nology College, as well as Longridge High School. Those who took part were asked to give
feedback on the session. This will be evalu ated before council officials decide to repeat the programme in the future.
• THE case against a former Mayor of Clitheroe who faces a benefit fraud charge has been adjourned at Preston Crown Court. John McGowan (54), of Ribble
Way, Clitheroe, is accused of failing to promptly notify a change of circum stances that affected his entitlement to disability living allowance. It is alleged th a t he was claiming the benefit between 2004 and 2006. The Depart ment of Works and Pensions alleges an overpayment of around £13,000. The case was adjourned for further
evidence to be served and McGowan was granted unconditional bail. 0 John McGowan has served for the
past four years as a Labour councillor representing the Edisford and Low Moor ward. He is standing for re-elec tion in th a t ward today, but as an Independent candidate.

told the inquest her sister had been upset because she believed another woman had been stealing money from her. When she took her sister’s birthday present round in Jan uary, Mrs Robinson had said: “I wish I wasn’t here”. “I t didn’t enter my head she
would do anything,” said Mrs Whittaker, who claimed her sister was terrified of the woman who she claimed had taken money from her bank accounts. “When I spoke to her on the
