Hospital A & E about to move to a new site
by Duncan Smith
P E O P L E in the Ribble Valley needing to use the accident and emergency department in Blackburn are being warned that, as from next weekend, these will be at a new location. Along with other hospital serv
ices, Accident and Emergency Services is due to transfer from Blackburn Royal Infirmary to the brand new Royal Blackburn Hos pital over the weekend of July 8th and 9th. The new hospital combines and

Hospice draw winners

extends the services previously provided at Blackburn Royal Infirmary and Queens Park Hos pital! The £113m. development has taken place on the site of Queen’s Park Hospital, in Haslingden Road. It has Iseen massively extended and improved to house existing and new hospital
services, including accident and emergency, on a single site. The new Royal Blackburn Hos
pital accident and emergency department opens at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 8th, and the Black burn Royal Infirmary casualty department will cease receiving new patients from that time. As well as being one of , the most
significant events in decades for local health care, this is a big weekend for football fans, when the final matches of the World Cup are being played. Accident and emergency activi
ty went up considerably bn the weekend when England played Paraguay. That weekend the department at Blackburn saw 585 patients, while Burnley saw 458. Many of the attendances were alcohol-related. A spokesman for the East Lan-
cashite Hospitals N H S Trust said: “We are asking people to be sensible about alcohol consump
tion during World Cup celebra-
. tions and also to use accident and emergency services appropriately, particularly during this weekend when the complicated task of moving the department at Black burn over to the new hospital is taking place. “It is a fact that many people
arrive at accident and emergency with common ailments and condi tions which could be treated by their G P during their normal opening hours or by the GP out- of-hours service (during evenings or weekends).” Mr Tom George, lead consult
ant for the move to the new department, said: “All our plans are now-in place for transferring Accident and Emergency Services on July 8th. “We have staffed appropriately
to ensure that we can continue to treat acutely ill and injured peo ple. Obviously we don’t want peo ple with genuine emergency or
health needs to be discouraged from attending accident and < emergency, but we would like to ask people to use the service sensi-' bly and appropriately. “In particular, we would ask
patients to use the GP Out-of- Hours Service and NH S Direct that weekend for ailments that do not need hospital attention.” • N H S Direct, the 24-hour
advice and health information service, is available by calling 0845 4647, while those wanting the out- of-hours doctor service should dial 08452 262626. People are also encouraged to seek advice from pharmacists, who are well quali fied to give expert advice on a range of ailments including sprains, headaches, ear aches, colds, sore throats and stomach upsets. • For anyone seeking directions
on an Internet-based mapping site to the new Royal Blackburn Hos pital, its postcode is BB2 3HH.
Villagers have become crimefighters! Party marks
C R IM E -F IG H T IN G residents in Read and Simonstone have joined forces with the police in a bid to improve community safety.' Hundreds of householders in the
two villages have signed up for a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. The move is designed to crack
down on the amount of criminal activity in the area and enable resi dents to work together and promote safety in their community. The areas covered in the scheme
include Singleton Avenue, Master- son Avenue, Beaufort Close, Berke ley Drive, Woodhead Road and Patrick Avenue (al l Read) plus Clough Lane and School Lane, Simonstone. Spearheading the initiative is PC
Peter Wareing, of Clitheroe police. He said: “The recently-launched Neighbourhood Watch Scheme will allow a group of neighbours to band together and look out for their own
Watch out for horses!
SIGNS warning motorists of the presence of horse riders have been erected around Waddington as part of a new road safety initiative. ■ Spearheaded by bridle
ways officer Cosima Towneley, the campaign aims to educate drivers to be aware of horse riders using the Ribble Valley’s rural road network. It follows a series of
accidents and near misses involving motorists and riders, which were brought to Miss Towneley’s atten tion by riders who use a local livery yard. “We all know how popu
/tfr.
lar the Ribble Valley is with motorists. What peo ple tend to forget is that they are not only people
using the roads, and due to a relative lack of bridle ways and off-road routes, there has been a growing number of incidents between riders and cars, which has resulted in acci dents and near misses. “We want people to
realise that when they approach a bend they should drive as if they could expect a horse around that bend.” Miss Towneley, whose
initiative has received the backing of the police, is now formulating a data base of accident reports. She would be very inter
ested to hear from anyone who has been involved in an accident or near miss in order to add those details to her database.
Facts needed include the
time and date of the acci dent or near miss, the loca tion of the incident; if the incident has been reported to the police as well as the accident number, and the age of the animal. Miss Towneley, who acts
as bridleways officer for Burnley and Padiham and writes a regular equestrian column in the Clitheroe Advertiser’s sister paper the Burnley Express, can be contacted on 07817 725976 or through her e- mail address mail@cosi

property, keep a watchful eye over their neighbours’ properties and gen erally be aware of any suspicious vehicles in the area. It is simply neighbours looking out for each other.” PC Wareing explained that he did
not expect the scheme to combat anti-social behaviour and does not require members of the public to patrol the streets of the villages. The initiative has been welcomed
by Read and Simonstone councillor Mrs Christine Bartrop, who believes . villagers have to look out for each other to beat crime. “If we work together and immedi
ately report any suspicious activity to the police, we can beat the crimi nals,” she said. “I have lived in Read for 15 years
and feel for years there has been a need for a neighbourhood watch scheme. I ’m absolutely delighted. We need to look out for each other -
it’s the whole point of being part of a village. To have a watchful neigh bour is very reassuring and an effec tive method in preventing crimes such as burglary.” The area’s community beat man
ager, PC Paul Sherratt .will be in regular contact with the residents in order to monitor the success of the scheme. He said: “These schemes are proven and work very well. Local people know their area and know who is out of place. This information can then be passed to the police for follow-up inquiries. “The scheme in Read launched
last week has already produced some very valuable intelligence to us about possible bogus officials. These schemes give the pubhc confidence in contacting the police at a local level.” Anyone interested in setting up a
similar scheme in their area should call PC Wareing on 01200 458711.
