S ’ S ’ j Nerves jangling

HOW are your nerves standing up? Watching England in the World Cup is

never straightforward. But they are now within touching dis

tance of a shot at real glory. A s th e World Cup nears the business

end of proceedings, the nerves begin to jangle - both on and off the pitch. The quarter-final line-up is now decided,

and it is a Europe-dominated one with England up there with the best of them. Well, we expected that didn’t we? That is the part of it that has been pre

dictable. Anyone asked to name the two non-Euro

pean sides in the last eight will undoubt edly have plumped for Brazil and Argenti na. Sure enough, they are both there. But that is the only predictable thing

that this enthralling spectacle has thrown up.

& P.irtnors

Who would have .thought Ukraine would reach the last eight?

PHIL Si reports. Who would have thought Ecuador would

give Poland a pasting in the group stages, and run England mighty close in the first knockout stage.

That game, of course, was settled by

our very own captain. Beckham free kicks used to have us all

on the edge of our seats in anticipation. But he had not bagged one for England

for so long that they appeared to be a thing of the past.

An hour into this one he proved that he

can still hit the target as well as play the role of provider.

And in doing so he c re a te d his own
