Ribchestcr Field Day Queen,

Taya Ormisher, left, with her attendents

(G170606/5b)

SCARY Ribch- ester residents, right, dress up during the

parade at the festival

(G170G06/5) Field day festival is given top marks ___________ by Faiza Afzaal___________

CROWDS of people descended on Ribchester to enjoy the village’s annual field day celebra tions. And the event was declared a fantastic success

by new Field Day chairman Gill Turner. She was delighted to see so many people enjoy

ing themselves a t the fun extravaganza, which boasted a bumper entry in the parade and a spoilt- for-choice number of attractions on the show field; “A fantastic number of people turned out to .

watch and join in activities,” she commented.. “There was so much to do and see. The Ribchester Morris Dancers were brilliant as usual, the Pendle' Dog Agility team was superb and the wonderful display by Lancashire Owls and Hawks provoked a lot of interest.”. The village got into the party mood with the

help of the Red Rose Band, the City of Preston Pipes and Drums Band and the Blackburn and Darwen Brass Band. In addition, Whalley-based drum and percussion group “Slap Happy” gave children the opportunity to try out instruments and provided entertainment on the showground. Memorable float entries ranged from “Ice AGE

2” and “Strictly Come Drinking” (an adaptation of “Strictly Come Dancing” complete with the top of Blackpool Tower!) to “The Sun Alwas's Shines on Ribtots” and St Wilfrid’s CE school’s entry, “ Curse of The Wererabbit”.

Villagers showed their ingenuity with entries

ranging from cardboard racing cars and a batmo- bile (“We’re bats about Ribchester”), to a toddler walking in a papier mache teapot. A Desperate Housewives’ float carried ladies

who longed for leisure rather than housework and there were topical references too - with one entry featuring mobile phones which couldn’t get a con nection in Ribchester! Acrobatic clown Siobhan Lough-Scott kept the

crowds entertained with her entry “Just clowning around”. New Field Day Queen Taya Ormisher received

her crown from retiring queen Laura Frost. Taya, who thanked all who had helped with her prepara tions for the day, was attended by Hannah and Lauren Bridgeman, Millie Clash, Alice Miller Jones, Eleanor Robinson, Millie Seed and page boy Callum Kershaw. Laura’s attendants were Megan Bennett, Megan Crossley, Katie Hayes, Katy Hinkley, Fiona Lofthouse, Stella Robinson and Jessica "rreacy with page boys Samuel Chatbum and Ben Gavan. Meanwhile, marquee judges Colin Cunliffe, Julie

Green and David and Sheila Royle had their work cut out judging entries ranging from a model play ground and home-made toys to seaside treasure and a world cup trophy. Attractions on the field ranged from hoopla and

donkey rides, to “Have a Go In A Digger” and the usual lucky dips. The day ended with children’s races organised by Chris Bennett.

The sun shone gloriously, but for the villagers’

Sunday tea party the sky was overcast. Neverthe less, despite some rain football and rounders games went ahead, Raikes’ Paraders Dixieland Jazz Band entertained the grown-ups and children’s enter tainer Mr Jolly had youngsters rocking with laugh ter.

Thanking everyone who helped make the Field

Day weekend such a success, dill added: “Thanks to everyone who supported the event. Now we’re looking forward to Keld Day 2007! ”

Abbey was host to 'Comedy of Errors'

S H A K E S P E A R E ’S most hilarious farce, “The Comedy of Errors”, was performed in the ancient grounds of Whalley Abbey. Despite some less-than-

hospitable June weather, with rain and strong winds buffeting players and audiences alike for several of performances, the outdoor production was well-received. Among those attending was a large group of pupils from St Augustine’s RC High School, Billington. The six performances

were staged over three days by n at ionally acclaimed yet locally- based Shakespearean pro duction company. Dean Taylor Productions. The Whalley shows formed part of a four-week North West of England tour of outdoor Shakespeare, sponsored by The United Co-operatives. The production is

enhanced by the addition of composer and conduc to r Chris Gill and his partner, Serenna Wagner.

wherever they have performed. Their latest tour includes various vanues in Belgium, Disney

land Paris and taking part in the prestigious Canterbury Inter national Choral Festival, singing in the city’s famous cathedral. Local audiences can see the Fair City Singers at Clitheroe

United Reformed Church next Wednesday, July 5th, a t the very start of their Euro-

pean tour. The choir’s varied
