Mayor hits out at vandals causing trouble in town

by Tracy Johnson

VANDALISM in Clitheroe has prompted the Ribble Valley Mayor to speak out. Coun. Mary Robinson, whose

term as Mayor finishes on May 9th, is calling for new measures to be put into place to tackle the problem caused by youths in the town. The Mayor, who lives close to

Henthom Park, believes the bridge between Victoria Road and the’ park is being used as an “escape

route” for vandals. “They always chase along a route where they can not be pursued,” she said. “So by heading for the bridge

they know that the police vehicle can’t chase them and once they are over it they then have easy access to head back into town.” Coun. Robinson said that closure

of the bridge was not necessarily the solution.

She would prefer to see a security

camera installed, which she hoped might deter vandals from heading in that direction.

Speaking about the Mayor’s com

ments, a Clitheroe police officer agreed that the area was a trouble spot.

However, the Mayor is quick to

point out that the vandalism being caused, mainly to cars, is only being carried out by a minority. “They are not Henthom youths,

they are from all over the town and not one area in particular. “I feel they are a minority in this

town and that the majority are upstanding members of the com munity,” she said.

Reunion date for former hospital staff

STAFF at the former Whittingham Hospi tal, a Victorian mental hospital on the edge of Preston, are being in-vited to a reunion on Saturday. I t will take place at the hospital’s old

staff club, now the Whittingham and Goos- nargh Sports and Social Club, in the grounds of the former hospital at Guild

Park. The hospital site is likely to be trans formed into a large housing development in the coming years, so there could be few opportunities in the future to go back and take a last look! . Tickets include a buffet, and are avail

able from the club (01772 865339) or by telephoning 01772 865630.
