Ramblers are first to complete walk

N IN E T E EN walkers have become the first to officially complete the new 27-mile Hod- der Way. Over the Easter weekend, the inaugural walk

of the new route, devised by Clitheroe Ramblers, took place. Chairman Jane Donnelly welcomed the walk

ers, officially declared the ro u te open and launched the new book of the same name. The walk starts a t Cross of Greet, follows the

course of the river from its source in the moor lands near the head of the valley, to its meeting with the Ribble. The idea of the Hodder Way was born on the

realisation th a t the source of the Hodder had become accessible to walkers, following the pass ing of the Countryside and Right of Way Act 2000, which came into effect locally in September 2004. Thirty ramblers set off on the first stage, fol

lowing the infant Hodder down from its gather ing grounds on the high fells into Stocks Reser voir, then along the eastern shore of the reservoir and into Slaidbum, losing more than 1,000ft. of height in the process.

On the second day, 25 took part on the middle

Hodder section, following the river bank from Slaidburn to Newton. Two swing bridges were crossed as the river meandered on its way to Dunsop Bridge, then on to Burholme Bridge, Whitewell, Stakes and Doeford Bridge. On the final day, 27 walkers left Doeford

Bridge on the lower Hodder section. They con tinued through the ancient natural woodlands of Limes Wood and Paper Mill Wood, over the “Roman Bridge” high above Mill Brook, up Aig- den Clough, along the river from Higher Hodder Bridge to Cromwell’s Bridge at Lower Hodder. Then they passed Winkley Hall and went down to the waters edge a t Hodder Foot, where the Hodder merges with the Ribble. Here the ram blers were able to dip their boots in the two rivers, the final refreshment stop and site for photo graphs. Jane Donnelly congratulated the 19 walkers

who had completed the entire route. They were later presented with a commemorative Hodder Way badge. She thanked Ben Brown, the walks leader, who

had co-ordinated and planned the event. Lan cashire County Council was also congratulated

on some excellent new stiles and footbridges installed on the route in time for the walk. For the naturalists, it had been a bonanza, with

50 species of birds recorded, including red breasL ed merganser and green woodpecker, specialist birds of the Hodder, as well as swallows, sand martins, common sandpipers, wheatears, willow warblers, blackcaps and a cRiffchaff - all summer migrants. Thirteen species of wild flowers were

The Theme of this year's Deaf Awareness Week, from May I-7, is to seek to improve understanding of different types of deafness by highlighting the diverse methods of communication used. Nearly 15% of the population have some degree of deafness. For every 10,000 people, 10 will be bom profoundly deaf. They'll probably get little or no benefit from hearing aids and mainly will use sign language to communicate. A further 20 will become profoundly deaf. They may use sign language and probably also lip-read. One hundred will be partially deaf. They may have difficulty following what's being said, even with hearing aids. Mostly they will lip-read. Some will use sign language as well. Around 600 will be hard of hearing. They'll follow what's being said with a hearing aid and will use an amplified telephone or one designed to be used with a hearing aid. About 800 will be mildly hard of hearing. They'may have difficulty following conversations particularly in large groups or in noisy situations. Many will wear hearing aids and many will find lip-reading helpful. About 2million people in Britain wear hearing aids; maybe another million would benefit from doing so. For more information, contact the UK. Council on Deafness at www.deafcouncil.org.uk or e mail info@deafcouncil.org.uk. The full range of amplified telephones and modem private digital in tlie ear hearing aids is available at The Hearing Centre, 35 Hammerton Street, Burnley. Rayovac Hearing Aid Batteries, this years Deaf Awareness Week sponsor, and The Hearing Centre is offering 2 for 1 on all sizes, up until Friday 12 May 2006.
