FINAL preparations are under way for a “Back to School” disco in Whalley


tonight. The charity disco, which be held a t the


Rendezvous nightclub, has been organised by members of the Whalley Playground Action Group to raise money towards state-of-the-art children’s fun equipment at Proctor’s Field play area. The evening of non-stop fun will give guests an opportunity to rediscover their


forgotten youth by coming dressed in school uniform and dance away to classic pop, rock and disco anthems from the ’70s. ’80s and ’90s. Attractions during the evening function,


tuck shop and plenty of entertainment. The disco is the first of many planned

events designed to raise money for the vil­ lage play area. I t follows the launch of a campaign earlier this year by local parents to raise a whopping £30,000 to replace the existing outdated play equipment. - Mrs Suzanne Nutter, treasurer of the

STAFF at Calderstones NHS Trust were honoured a t a special ceremony for suc­ cessfully achieving professional care qual­ ifications. The presentation, a t St Luke’s Centre


a t the Whalley-based hospital, celebrat­ ed the achievements of those who have completed th e “Learning Disability Awards Framework (LDAF)” induction and foundation units and various NVQ awards in care. In total, 200 people have completed the


qualifications during the past 12 months and a selection of those were presented with their awards by Mr Russ Pearce, chief executive a t the hospital. In addition, staff who have successfully


become NVQ assessors were also reward­ ed for their outstanding efforts in gaining the qualification. LDAF is a set of qualifications split


into different units which are appropriate to people with learning disabilities. All new employees to Calderstones,


which provides specialist care to people with learning disabilities, are required to complete the LDAF qualifications and demonstrate tha t they are knowledgeable in each different area. Commenting on the presentation, Mr

A SUMMER festival guaranteed to a t t ra c t thousands of visitors to Whalley is being organ­ ised. Talks are currently being


held between members of Whalley Chamber of Trade, the parish council, manage­ ment at Whalley Abbey, the Pickwick Committee and other local organisations, for the first-ever summer fete cel­ ebrating what the picturesque Ribble Valley village has to offer. The vibrant two-day spec­ tacular, entitled “A Celebra-


■ tion of Whalley”, is planned to take place during the first weekend in September at the historic Whalley Abbey site. The grounds will be filled with a wide range of stalls


selling local goods. A treasure hunt, a sponsored Whalley Nab run, balloon race, tug-of- war and a sausage-tasting competition, are just some of the dozens of ac tivitie s planned for the summer extravaganza. The outdoor event will also


give adults and children a chance to take p a r t in the “Whalley WOW factor”. The X-factor-style contest will enable the competitors to take centre stage and hit the high note just like th e ir favourite pop stars. Judges will be looking for competi­ tors with happy, outgoing per­ sonalities, with a fine voice and lots of talent! I t will also be an opportunity for the local pubs to join in on the fun and host competitions. The star attraction on the


launch will be a celebrity guest - although organisers are remaining tight-lipped as
