Wife of ex-editor dies at 87

THE wife of a former editor of the Clitheroe Advertiser and Times has died in a Wigan nursing home at the age of 87. Mrs Betty (Elizabeth)

Loynds died on April 15th in Douglas Bank Nursing Home. She had moved there with

her husband, John, after his ill health made it impossible to continue in their Southport home. Mr Loynds trained as a

reporter on the Clitherpe Advertiser in 1938. He succeeded Bryan Cowgill

as editor in 1955, leaving after three years to become the assis

tant editor of The Universe. Mrs Loynds came from a

family of Irish Catholics from Kells, Co. Meath. She left Ire land in 1941 and during her time in Clitheroe worked at Trutex. The couple were active and well known members of St Michael and St John’s RC Church, Clitheroe, and involved in various Roman Catholic organisations. The funeral takes place

today at St Bernadette’s RC Church, Shevington. More details are available from J. Maguire Funeral Services: 01942 825554.
