Clitheroe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, April 13th, 2006 17 H in P F 51 1*111 l l V i^ c Activity weeks for children r wealth of talent

AROUND 100 prints were entered into Ribblesdale Cam era Club’s annual print compe tition, demonstrating a wealth of talent among its enthusiastic members. The competition was judged by

the secretary of the Lancashire and Cheshire Photographic Union, Christine Widdall, a brilliant cre ative photographer in her own right. In the portraiture class, Steuart

Kellington gained first place with “Camel Driver”, while Trevor Marklew’s “Indian Man” was sec ond and Denis Kendal’s “Chinese Shepherd Girl” third. Jeff Cowling ‘s “Collared Dove”

and “Wood Duck” were placed first and second in the nature prints sec tion, with Steuart Kellington’s “Grey Heron” third. Stephen Robinson won the open

black-and-white section with an extraordinary, almost abstract, nature picture called “Starling Flock”. Jeff Cowling’s unusual and

attractive green-toned pictures, “Early Morning Flight” and “The Path to Hull Pot”, were placed sec ond and third. The top colour print was by

Leslie Marklew, called “Train at Ooty”. This was a scene that created a

vivid impression of an Indian rail way station in strong directional light, creating shapes and patterns from the billowing steam from the engine, echoed by the swirl of pas sengers in front of the camera.

An extraordinary picture and a

worthy winner. Joint second places went to Jeff Cowling’s “Reflec tions” and Raymond Greenwood’s “Stairway Tunnel”. A special award, the James

Abbot Trophy, was awarded to Steuart Kellington for his breath- takingly beautiful picture of the “Quiraing, Isle of Skye”. The John West Rosebowl, for the

most creative picture, was awarded to a colourful print by Ken Geddes called “Spanish Dancers”. This image was unusual because the creation of the image was in-

camera, using a slow shutter speed to blur the picture and create a feel ing of movement. Colour slides and projected digi

tal images, to be judged separately, will be the subject of this week’s meeting. Prospective members are always at the camera club and more information can be obtained from chairman Jeff Cowling on (01200) 440868 or secretary Ken Geddes on 423474. Our picture shows Ken Geddes’

evocative print “Spanish Dancers”, which won the John West Rosebowl for the most creative picture.
