weaving erratically across the road and when you overtake, there is the driver immersed in an “important” phone call on his or her mobile. It begs the question: What kind of call is important enough to risk your life, the lives of other motorists and a £1,000 fine? Even the latest law making it illegal to use’


a mobile phone in the car does not seem to deter drivers from taking that call. It will probably take a concerted advertis­


ing campaign over many years similar to the one that has changed the public's view of drink driving to change people’s behaviour.

[HE news that Lamborghini was going to be swallowed up by Audi led many fans of the


marque to feel this was the beginning of the end.


The truth was it was merely the


end of the beginning. Wipe away the dewy-eyed nostalgia and history will show that Lamborghini’s most suc­ cessful period and their best cars have come from the Audi era. Cars like the Murcielago, the Gallardo SE and the car we have here, the Gallar­ do Spyder. This car could so easily have been


an abomination, and were it built 10 years ago it would have been. Nowa­ days, savvy brand management has retained the extreme feel of the Lam­ borghini marque but has managed to rid Lamborghini of the excesses that characterised some of its earlier pro­ prietors. The Gallardo Spyder is a very clev­


erly pitched car, insofar as it man­ ages to retain much of the look and feel of what many customers would expect from a “proper” Lamborghi­ ni, "while blending in a healthy dose of German build quality. Normally, I am dead set against lopping the roofs off cars that started

out as saloons or coupes. The results are often bodies without adequate torsional stiffness, a problem exacer­ bated when a 520 b.h.p. engine is part of the mix. In the case of the Gallardo, the


chassis was designed from the outset with an open-topped car in mind, and hence has an incredible resist­ ance to twisting. Even with the metal roof lopped off, the Gallardo is still a good deal stiffer than many supercar coupes.
