Colleagues’ birthday surprise for Dick (80)

FARMERS from across the Ribble Valley and beyond joined in a cho rus o f “Hap py Birth day” when Gisbum Auc tion Mart worker Dick Chew turned 801 Mr Chew, who is still

going strong 15 years after most men retire, has worked in the farming com munity all his life, and for the past 25 years in the dairy.department at the busy auction mart. Two of his colleagues

there, Rachel Allison and Martin Leverton, organ ised a surprise birthday presentation, which took place in the main sale ring during the October Dairy Show and Sale. They presented Mr

Chew with a Border Fine Arts ornament and display, plus various other gifts.

August was a cooler and

wet month AUGUST’S weather was a complete contrast to the fine warm, sunny weather of July.

Not only was it cooler

with less sunshine, but it had more than average rainfall of five inches. A wet start to the month

was followed with a taste of better weather on the 6th and 7th.

From then on, however,

westerly and north-wester ly winds kept the tempera tures low with heavy downpours right to the end

after a collection among the yard staff, auction mart directors, the cafe and auc tioneers. Auction mart chairman

Mr David Moorhouse made a short speech in praise of Dick and the farmers thronging the sale ring joined in a rousing

chorus of “Happy birthday to you”. Posters and bal loons also decorated the

dairy department for the day. Our picture shows Mr

Nigel helped put the TV spotlight on local produce

BBC television pro gramme “Inside Out” fea tured local chef Nigel Haworth of Northcote Manor, Langho, this week. Mr Haworth is a cham

pion of using local produce in his restaurant at North cote Manor and also at The Three Fishes, Mitton.

• In the documentary series, which focuses on stories and people from the North-West, actor John McArdle, who lives in Bolton-by-Bowland, inter viewed Nigel and went out-and-about into the countryside with him to places where he sources his local produce. Nigel paid a v is it to

_ . _

Clitheroe fishmonger Giles Shaw at his Wellgate Fish eries, where he selected beautiful wild sea bass and some Morecambe Bay shrimps together with some samphire to make a dish for Mr McArdle. He also visited Jim Cur- wen, at Marshaw Farm,

Abbeysteads, where the rare breed British White Cattle are fed oh the local meadow and are also treated to bucket-fulls of Bowland Brewery beer, giving the meat a wonder ful fresh and succulent flavour. Matured and hung for

five weeks, the beef has a uniquely mouth-watering flavour and is exclusively available to Mr Haworth. The next port of call was

Leagram Organic Dairy, where Bob Kitchen has been renovated from an old cow shed to creat a dairy where Mr Haworth could indulge in his pas sion for using Bowland organic milk to make chee.se. The chef created a meal

for Mr McArdle using all the ingredients featured in the programme, finishing off with a cheese ice-cream and, of course, a drop of Bowland Brewery beer from Bashall Barn.
