Bettie Page the pin-up sensation

“THE NOTORIOUS BETTIE PAGE” (Ccrl 18); screenings on October Kith, 18th and 19th at 7-30 p.m., Stage & Screen @ St Mary’s Centre, Churcli Street, Clithcroe.

THEY might seem tame by today’s hard core standards, but half a century ago Bet tie Page’s exploits made Jordan look like a convent girl. Page was the ultimate girl-next door and

one of the most popular Playboy centre folds, but her move away from “accepted” softcore pornography into the darker world of fetishism caused a Stateside sex scandal. She challenged the conservative 1950s,

posing as a fierce dominatrix and earning both a cult underground following and Sen ate Committee investigation on juvenile delinquency - a witch-hunt orchestrated by a senator from her home state of Ten nessee bent on exploiting her as a stepping stone to the White House. At the height of her popularity she dis

appeared, but in 1979 and 1982 Page, by then a diagnosed schizophrenic, tried to stab several people and was institution alised. Featuring a largely unknown cast, this

biopic highlights society’s changing atti tudes to sex as well as revealing the unseen side of Page’s own, often tragic, life.

Even so a very enjoyable

time was spent in Brighton with memories of Red Slump

and good friends. As Dish of the Week has not appeared for a few weeks, my family and

friends won’t know where I’ve been!

Ingredients.. 8 at a pinch)

(Serves 6, but will stretch to -

For the fruit 1 kg red summer fruits 150g

(10 tbsp) sugar, or to taste 4-5 tbsp water or suitable

liqueur (creme de cassis, creme de mure or an orange liqueur)

For the dumplings' '

• 120g self-raising flour • 30g caster sugar • 1.5g ground almonds'

• 75g unsalted butter • milk to bind

Method 1. Put the fruit in a dish - use

one of those oval, old-fashioned cream stoneware bowls, but any pie or baking dish that has a capacity of about three litres should do. Sprinkle the fruit with sugar to taste, about 6-8 tbsp. Add the water or suitable liqueur and put, covered (with a lid or foil) in a preheated oven (gas mark 5/190°C); If you haven’t got fresh fruit, use frozen

■red berries (not strawberries) and don’t use framboise or fraise liqueur, either. 2. Leave in the oven while you

get on with the dumplings (though you could have made them earlier and left them in the fridge). Sift the flour into a bowl, add a pinch of salt, the caster sugar and ground almonds. Stir them together then throw in the butter, chilled and cut into small dice, and rub into the dry ingre dients until the mixture is crum bly. You could do this in a free standing electric mixer, but not a processor. 3. Pour enough milk to bind

the dough, it should be soft, but not too sticky to form into balls the size of small walnuts (reniember they will swell while cooking and then they should grow-up into the size of proper walnuts, this quantity of dough should make about 24 little dumplings. Take the dish of fruit out of the oven when it is simmering, about 35 minutes if frozen, 15 if not. Stir the fruit and taste for sweetness, adding more sugar if necessary. Put the dumplings in the dish, cover again arid bake for another 15 - 20 faiinutes by which time the dumplings should be cooked, beautifully swollen and no longer doughy. 4. Serve with icecream or lots of runny cream. .
