of the Clitheroe Parish Church Amateur Operat ic and Dramatic Society, he wielded the baton in front of the orchestra for nine years, re-emerging as society chairman. A re tired teacher, he

taught at the old Accring ton Road School in Blackburn, was head of English a t St H ild a ’s School, Blackburn, now St Wilfrid’s, and finished his career having been head of English a t Gawthorpe High School,

Padiham for 22 years. Music was his life-long hobby. He started to sing solos at the age of 10. He became a bass a t 15 and changed to tenor at 25 when he started to take lessons with F. W. Andrews, a well-known organist in the Blackburn area. His first tenor solos were in Handel’s Messiah in 1957. In 1963 he auditioned

for the BBC Northern Singers in Manchester and began a semi-profes

sional career which lasted 16 years and included more than 120 b ro ad casts. In 1967 he joined the

Clitheroe Parish Church society and played princi pal roles until 1986. In 1979 he took up th e baton with Burnley Light Opera Society and went on to conduct at Black burn, Accrington and Clitheroe. He conducted 200 singers and 55 musi cians in a Voices for Hos pices “Come and Sing” performance of Haydn’s “Creation” in 1991 - one of 110 simultaneous “Come and Sings” being held throughout Britain. In all he conducted

four performances, two of “Creation” and two of Handel’s “Messiah,” over a period of years, which went out on radio and tel-, evision. In 2000 he took up singing lessons again, with Francis P rice of Whalley. .

Mr Parker married his

wife, Eileen, in 1951. The couple moved to Twiston in 1963, painstakingly converting two cottages into one. Twiston was his home

for the past 43 years. It was an area he loved and his cottage was regularly the scene of memorable ch a r ity fund-raising events. Mr Parker’s ill ness was diagnosed in August. Just weeks before, he

had celebrated 60 years as a Blackburn Rovers’ supporter by taking a group of friends to a pre season friendly against New Zealand. He was a respected member of Clitheroe Probus Club and of Clitheroe Choral Society. The private cremation

took place a t Skipton yesterday, and was fol lowed by a service of thanksgiving in Down- ham Church.
