■ MEMBERS of the Women’s Institute throughout the Ribbic Valley turned out in force to support this year’s annual handicraft and produce show. Exhibitors and visitors could not fail to be impressed by the
extremely high standard of produce, crafts and confectionery on display. Great Harwood institute took the prize for most points, with
Hurst Green not too far behind in second place and Fence were in third position. Below, we print more pictures from the event, held at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School’s Chatburn Road site.

Ramblers walk
in Calder Valley SEVENTEEN members of Clitheroe Ramblers enjoyed a high level walk in the Calder Valley. The meeting point was the Shepherd’s
Rest Inn for a ramble above the villages of Mankinholes and Lumbutts. On a summer’s day, and with Stoodley
Pike Monument in view from the outset, the group ascended Langfield Edge to a well defined plateau of moorland. At the top of a low banking, the group
was confronted with a reservoir known as “Gaddings” dam which was built to main tain the level of water in the Rochdale Canal 900ft below. After walking a further quarter of a

mile across moorland, the walkers turned on to the Pennine Way where the views opened out to Withens Reservoir. The ro u te then followed a popular
course towards Stoodley Pike which was erected in 1815 to celebrate peace after victory over Napoleon. I t later collapsed and was rebuilt in
1856. After lunch, and proceeding to Stoodley
Pike, the party descended the moor and walked to Mankinholes, an old handloom weaving settlement. Then, following a stone paved track, the
ramblers arrived at Lumbutts, ^hich is dominated by a former water wheel tower. The group returned to the starting
point after completing a seven mile walk. Need Explorer copies?

THE little village of West Bradford will be invaded by colourful creepy crawlies this weekend. Buzzing bumble bees,
giant butterflies, spiders, beetles, bed bugs and cater pillars will take over the village as residents host the second bug festival. The one-day event,
which appeals to both the young and old alike, will be staged on Sunday and will be run in conjunction with the annual craft and pro duce show in the village hall and the car boot sale on the car park.
During the past few
weeks villagers have been busy trying their hands at decorating weird and won derful creatures to be dis played in their gardens. Organised by members
of the West Bradford Play ing Field Committee, pro ceeds from the event will go towards purchasing a new safety surface for the exist ing children’s play area. One of the organisers,
Mr David Sharp, said: “All the villagers are very excit ed about the festival, which \vill end in a competition - one for the children and
one for the adults - to find the various bugs around the gardens in West Brad ford. “We staged the festival
two years ago for the first time ever and 40 house holders took part in it. We are hoping people will join in the celebrations once again and help make it a success.” Cur picture shows organ
