Biker Ben storms to great grand prix win

by Vivien Meath

TIGHT bends, high speed and lots of lycra came to Clitheroe in the second cycling grand prix and attracted thousands of spec

tators. The drama on the track was

replicated by that in the dark skies above, but rain held off and the event was hailed anoth er success. Winner of the elite race was Recycling’s Ben Green wood, who marked his imminent departure to I ta ly where he spends the second half of his season, content with a good night’s work in the Clitheroe event. Following a couple of laps led

by Science in Sport’s Ian Wilkin son, the young Lancaster rider stormed ahead, making the race his own as he lapped some of the country’s best cyclists in amaz ing style. Following a photo-fin

ish, Wilkinson was declared sec ond and Recycling’s Robin Shar man third. It was a good night for Brock-

hall-based Science in Sport, whose managing director Tim Lawson also finished the chal lenging 50-lap town centre course which saw many pull out. His parents and company

founders were there to cheer the team on, and must be gratified by the knowledge th a t their products are already used by many of the competitors, includ ing the legendary Malcolm Elliott, who was racing for the Plowman Craven team. In his mid-40s, he is certainly proof that age is no barrier. The night however belonged

to Greenwood (22), who, ironi cally, has supported Clitheroe’s Grand Prix from the onset, trav elling to pose for promotional pictures for the two events despite regular competitions at national and international level

in a successful season. Estimates put the spectators at around 3,000. Although the numbers were down on last year, several town centre shops stayed open to take advantage of the extra trade, public houses noticed an increase in customers and fish and chip shops reported a boom in sales. Nelson man Alan Ramsbot-

tom (70), who finished in the top 20 in the Tour de France in the 1960s and spent much of his working life at Clitheroe’s Tru- tex Mill, waved the riders off. The event began with a VIP

reception hosted by sponsor Johnson Matthey Catalysts, with Castle Cement, Houldsworth Solicitors, TU Sports and Pedal Power repre sentatives in attendance along with civic dignitaries and guests. The support race attracted a

good junior field and was won convincingly by Jack Pullar, of Lune RCC, with Matt Wallace,

of Ribble Valley CRC in the chasing group of six. Barnoldswick factory Hope Technology and race organisers Pennine Events donated prime prizes for specified laps and sprint laps and the winners received bouquets courtesy of Sainsburys and Champagne thanks to Threshers. First home took £300, with

£225 to the second and £180 to the third, with additional mone tary prizes down to the 20th placing. The winner of the sup port race received £75. The event was p a r t of a

National Elite Racing Series Grand Prix event which visits towns throughout the country ensuring that the country’s top cyclists not only compete on challenging circuits all year, but which is also designed to raise the sport’s profile and give mem bers of the public a chance to watch top cyclists in action - for freel
