A SPECIAL birthday celebra tion was held at The Manor House in Chatburn to mark the 90th birthday of Mrs Edith Davies. The Mayor and Mayoress of
the Kibble Valley, Coun. Peter Ainsworth and his wife, Thirza, presented Mrs Davies with a gift and everyone enjoyed birthday cake, chocolates and
sparkling wine to toast the birthday girl. Mrs Davies then went on to
spend the afternoon at The Calf’s Head in Worston where her family had arranged anoth er celebration with friends and family. Our picture shows Mrs

Trade worries over plans to cut parking
CUTTING parking spaces by half on a busy town cen tre street will only drive cus tomers away from
Clitheroe. These are some of the fears
expressed by concerned Moor Lane traders if limited parking on Moor Lane, Clitheroe, is given the go-ahead. Highway officials at Lan
cashire County Council are exploring proposals to intro duce loading bays and disabled parking spaces in the busy street - slashing the number of parking spaces currently avail able by half. The move is designed to ease
traffic congestion and improve access for pedestrians - partic ularly for people with disabili ties. Officials claim it will also stop heavy goods vehicles and careless motorists from parking on the pavements and save the county council thousands of pounds a month normally spent to repair damaged foot paths. However, the plans have
prompted a backlash from angry traders who claim the introduction of limited parking will force customers to “aban don” Clitheroe and shop in other market towns where parking is available. Now a “special” meeting is
to be held at the end of the month enabling traders and residents to voice their con cerns about the controversial plans to find a solution to the traffic problems on the street. Mr Jo Harding, who runs
Clitheroe Books in Moor Lane, claims looking at parking facil ities in one Clitheroe area will not solve the problem. He commented: “Lancashire
County Council cannot just look at Moor Lane and cut the parking facilities by half. Motorists will be forced to park on other streets in Clitheroe, which are already cluttered with cars all day. This proposal is not solving the problem, it is shifting it. The county council does not understand the traffic problems related to Moor Lane and highway officials are try ing to implement solutions, which will not address the problems. “The people that live and
work in Moor Lane strenuously oppose any moves to reduce parking in the town centre street by almost 50% as it will impact greatly on their lives and livelihood. Letters of objections have already been sent to the council and the traders are soon to meet with Ribble Valley councillors in a bid to solve this matter once and for all. Parking in Clitheroe is a real problem and the council needs to do some thing about it. We are losing customers to places like Skip- ton because of the lack of park ing in the town and this has to be dealt with as a matter of urgency.” Earlier this week. County
Coun. Chris Holtom said: “More consultation time has been given to the traders until the next meeting. A decision will almost certainly be made on October 4th, at the next Ribble Valley Lancashire Local meeting to be held at Clitheroe Royal Grammar School. “Meanwhile, we will meet
with the traders at the end of August to discuss any issues they have regarding the park ing problems in Moor Lane.”
