mas mood far earlier than the rest of the UK new You Gov research commissioned by cus tomer communications special ist Broadsystem, reveals. Six per cent of Northerners
take advantage of the January sales and start their present shopping at the start of the year, this is double the amount of Southerners who tend to wait until October (26%). The research revealed
Northerners to be more tactile when buying presents. 57% want to see or touch the prod uct before making a high end purchase (over £100), in com parison to 48% of Southerners. Furthermore, almost a third of people in the North would only buy over the web if it was from a company with a high street presence. Interestingly, in terms of
charitable giving at Christmas, the North is more likely to support children's charities, with a third naming charities such as NSPCC as their prefer ence, 9% more than their Southern counterparts. The South on the other hand is more concerned by health related, animal, third world and environmental causes. Finally, children living in the
South are more likely to try and contact Santa Claus with
their Christmas list than those in the North. Despite this howeven Northern children are more inventive, with 1% even trying to contact the main man by telephone! Comments Caroline Wor-
boys, CEO, Broadsystem: "Does
the famous
North/South divide actually exist? In terms of Christmas it most certainly does. The research shows that the North gets more Christmassy earlier and are less bah-humbug." Further findings from the
research include; ■ 68% of consumers leave
their Christmas shopping until the last quarter of the year ■ Scotland will be having an
online Christmas ■ 1% don't start shopping
until Christmas Eve - all of these are men! ■ Writing a letter to Father
Christmas is still the preferred way to log a Christmas list with Santa despite the techno logical know-how of today's children - only 2% email him ■ TV advertising is no
longer a major influencer - only 38% of consumers gain inspiration for Christmas gifts from the TV ■ Shopping in-store is the
preferred purchasing method for presents over £100 (54%)

Clitheroe Advertiser &Times, Thursday, December 7th, 2006 35 Strategies to adopt to help you cut down on festive drinking
• Continued from page 32
Decide how
much you're going to drink before you go to a party and stick with it. Try to eat before you go out to slow down the effect of the alcohol and have a soft drink or water between every alcoholic drink. Never have your drink topped up, as you will lose track of how many units you've drunk. Don't join in
rounds - make a financial excuse, ie the cost of Christ mas. Practise not drinking. Have alcohol-free nights or commit to driv ing home - the more your mind goes into situations sober the easier it will become.
Before you go
out, rehearse your reasons for refusing to drink more than you want. Practise saying to yourself 'thanks, but I'm pacing myself so I won't have another just now...'. It's fine to tell
little white lies like saying you're on antibiotics, recov ering from a big
drinking night the previous evening, or can't afford a hangover before a demanding meet- ing/moming the next day.' "As your confi
dence in your abili ty to drink less grows, you'll even tually be able to straightforwardly explain to friends that you're limiting alcohol.
Georgia says:
"We often uncon sciously choose

friends who drink as much as we do to justify our own drinking. Also, people encourage each other to drink because they don't want their own drinking habits exposed. "Initially, if
you're starting to cut back on your
drinking it's better not to say so, as friends (maybe worried about their drinking) may find it uncomfortable and won't encour age you. "Your drinking
less may put their drinking into sharper focus, but don't be bullied
into drinking to keep them happy." Georgia says all
drinkers have a strong inner critic telling them they won't fit in unless they drink. Keep a chart
recording what emotion you feel before you drink. This helps you
recognise your drinking pattern, what makes you override your desire to reduce drinking and who you are with when it hap pens. By under standing your drink- j ing you will be more able to control it.
