Swim coach Barbara is named ‘Unsung Hero’ at BBC sports awards night

______ by Adrian Capstick

CLITHEROE DOLPHINS’ coach Barbara Jones has been recognised for more than 20 years’ involvement in jimior swimming by the BBC Sports Personality of the

Year Awards. On Monday the retired Clitheroe

librarian won the North West's Unsung Hero Award at the BBC North West Sports Awards held in Manchester. She beat two other nominees and

now travels to Birmingham's NEC on Sunday in a bid to win the national award. The Unsung Hero Award is present

ed to a volunteer who has made a real difference to a sports club or team. It was first awarded in 2003 and was

won last year by fellow swimming coach Trevor Collins, who had spent more than 25 years coaching swimmers on the Isle of Wight.

Mrs Jones gives her time freely on a

Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Sunday to the Dolphins, as well as helping both Brookside and Pendle Primary Schools with their swimming lessons. She qualified as a swimming coach 22

years ago and, between her charity shop work, the swimming pool and her former part-time job in the l ib r^ , has led an active life in the community. Mrs Jones said: "I just love it. Hun

dreds of people give their time like me and they do it because they enjoy it. I'm no hero really because I wouldn't do it if I didn't enjoy it. "I've been involved since Ribblesdale

Pool was built. They were just going to build the main pool without a teaching pool and I was one of the people who went around at the time collecting money campaigning for it to be built. "My son joined and it quickly

. became obvious he had the potential to become a very good competitive swim mer. It's because of Peter th a t I'm involved today."

She added: "It was a complete sur

prise. Mandy Dewhurst, who has four children at the club, nominated me and I didn't think I'd make the final three. "Presentations aren't really my thing,

I'd much rather be in a tracksuit on the pool side than getting all dressed up for awards." Mrs Jones will be in good company

at the show, presented by Sue Barker, Gary Lineker and Adrian Chiles, which is being held outside London for the first time in the event's 53-year history. The Clitheroe coach will be among

this year's leading sports stars nomi nated for BBC Sports Personality of the Year, including racing driver Jenson Button, equestrian star Zara Phillips, golfer Darren Clarke and tennis player Andy Murray. Some 3,000 tickets went on sale to

the public in October, and sold out in less than 50 minutes. BBC Sports Personality of the Year

Awards is live on BBC One at 7 p.m. on Sunday evening.
