Help me good Samaritans
by Kate Grieves
A WOMAN is searching for the festive good Samaritans who rescued her from a
; deserted country lane on Christmas Eve. I t was Christmas Eve morning when Mrs
Pat Spurin, pictured, found herself stranded a t the foot of Pendle Hill. Her car failed to s ta r t due to a jammed
steering wheel after she had been showing a visiting Taiwanese family around the area between;Barley, and Downham in the Kibble Valley. She managed to flag down two men who
were passing and who tried to fix the problem. They then phoned the AA, but could not get a signal, so they walked into Downham to use a public telephone there.
- A peaceful start to the New Year
AN invitation to start the New Year with a difference is being extended by Blackburn Bud dhist Centre. . I t is invjting people across the
Kibble Valley to visit its new centre a t 16 Strawberry Bank, Blackburn, to learn more about
, Buddhism and meditate. The centre, a registered char ity, is running a “Three Jewels
Foundation Course on Bud dhism and M ed i ta t io n ” on Tuesday evenings (7 p.m. to 9- 30 p.m.) beginning on January 10th. There is also a Tuesday evening drop-in class, giving an introduction to three tradition al meditation practices. For more information or to
book, a place, call Valerie on 01254261270.
They returned after half-an-hour and said
there had been a delay because the AA had been trying to find them in a Downham near Billericay in Essex following the first, broken- up phone call. The rescue vehicle arrived shortly after
wards and was able to s ta r t thd car. Mrs Spurin then drove the car into Burnley fol-, lowed by the AA vehicle where the steering wheel was fixed. ■ Mrs Spurin, of Rosemourit Avenue, Burn ley, said: “I am just so grateful to those two men. They were so kind to go to all that trou ble for complete strangers. I t was just over whelming and I want to say a huge thank- you. I have no idea how long we would have been there if they had not come along and helped us. “The two children in the car, who were aged.-
■ seven and 10, were getting very worried and concerned about it, and the quick action of the two men meant they were not stranded in an unfamiliar place. They helped us enor- mously.” : . Mrs Spurin, who has students or a family
visit from overseas every year as part of the HOST UK programme, said th a t the men who helped were father and son and were from
’’Clitheroe,.but she does not know their names so can not get in touch with them. • She said: “I t would be lovely if they could
come forward so I could say a proper thank- you. I really can’t thank them enough for the help they gave us.”. ' Are you the good Samaritans who helped Mrs Spurin? If you are please get in touch with Kate Grieves at the Burnley Express on 01282 426161 ext. 606. :

Donkeys greet
ramblers’ party DONKEYS wintering in Rowland were among the highlights of a festive walk enjoyed by Clitheroe ramblers. The party of 18 started out from
Slaidburn, walking to the church and turning right along a track, south of Battersby Barn.
- Here, seven donkeys, possibly seaside animals spending the winter in the area, trotted towards them. The walkers continued to the point ■
.where five footpaths converge and turned south to Newton.
•'■ From Newton, home of another don key named “Maverick’^ they walked south along the river to Foulscales, crossed the road and turned east to Storth and Slim Row, following littled used paths to Wlndygate. ' ■ . Up the fell road, they turned left ■
towards Smelthwaites. -. The weather had been fine, but heavy

FAMILIES are being warned by United Utilities to be on their guard agains t bogus- callers posing as employees from the “water board”. • - Tricksters may seize the
opportunity to target homes in the region in the belief families
'may have more cash and new gifts in the house. Jean Leslie, from United
Utilities customer team, is urg ing householders to check ID closely before allowing any-
.body in their home. V ; . She said: “These days bogus
callers can be extremely con- ■vincing and often seem to have a plausible excuse for gaining access to the house.
. “At this time of the year, the
thieves know only too well that many of us will have gifts and perhaps extra money in the house and they will not think twice about stealing it.” All United Utilities employ
ees carry ID cards and if unsure customers can check the caller’s identity with the com pany. Jean added: “Our engineers
will not mind waiting while you check they are who they say they are and our message is quite simple ‘if in doubt, keep them out’.” -

Cash will honour golfer’s memory
by Faiza Afzaal
RELATIVES and friends of a much-loved golfer have honoured
■ his memory by raising ■vital funds for a deserving charity. Mr Bill Shepherd (82), of Bolland
Close, Clitheroe, died in April after a battle with cancer. He was one of the
• oldest and active members of Mytton Fold GoF Club, in Langho. His family and friends ha-ve kept his
Water company warning over bogus officials
Below are some tips on pre
venting bogus caller crime: ® Ensure that all doors are
locked at all times even when a t home; if you have one, always put the chain on before you open the door 9 Always ask to see an iden- ■
tification card and then ring the company concerned,to check that the caller is genuine 0 Never think you are being
over cautious - it is always bet ter to be safe than sorry 9 EnsureThat-you know ■
what to do if something goes wrong with your w'ater or gas supply 9 Always ask the caller to
call back later when you have someone with you if you are still unsure 9 United Utilities has a pass
word scheme, which is available for . anyone-who feels they would like extra protection in their home. Customers can reg ister their chosen password by calling the company on 0845 7461100. 9 Remember bogus callers
can come in all shapes and size - women, men, pairs and chi- dren. There are well-document ed cases of bogus callers even posing as policeman, council officials and charity workers.

memory alive by raising money for North West Cancer Research Fund. A very successful charity golf day
was held at the hotel in the summer, which raised funds for a number of good causes. From th e money collected, a
cheque for £500 was donated to the cancer charity in memory of Mr Shepherd. • Mr Shepherd’s daughter, Mrs Janet
Webb, of Moor End, Clitheroe, said: “I am really pleased with the money
raised. At the funeral we requested donations instead of flowers and raised £300: • “My dad was quite an active mem
ber of Mytton Fold GoF Club and I would Fke to thank Frank and Lilian Hargreaves and the senior section of the golf club for helping to raise the money.” The ch arity ’s aim is to provide •
grants to support research into the causes of cancer and the mechanisms by which cancers arise.
