Ciitheroe Advertiser STimes, Thursday, January 5th, 2006 19 I I / - . L e t t e r s t o t h e I d i t o r ^ From restaurant to night
club almost over night I WRITE mainly out of concern regarding the application for a provisional statement in respect of licensing for the old sorting office in King, Street, Ciitheroe.
■ Planning permission originally obtained for a .
restaurant, opening between 8 a.m. and mid-, night, now appears to he developing into a fully- fledged bar, tvith the prov^ion of alcohol, music, dancing and live entertainment until the early
hours. According to my understanding, the applica . . ■
tion seeks that these premises be open from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. from Sunday to Thursday and until 1-30 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. While acknowledging that Christmas and New
Year are times for celebration of various kinds, it appears that clients will be able to occupy these premises, as late as 2-30 a.m. on Christmas morn ing. During next New Year, permission is sought for hours of opening extending over 37 hours. Present concern and objection, are not borne
merely for the sake of complaint, but are based on experience and observation over the years. During the 40 that I have lived here, the more recent years have given the greatest grounds for
concern. The close proximity of this present venture,
seems to pose the greatest threat to the enjoy ment of a trouble-free existence here and I guard
jealously, the comparative tranquility of my hearth and home, albeit in the town centre.
The principal areas of concern for myself and m i '
other occupants in the vicinity relate to noise lev els from the establishment generally and to the escalation of noise, litter, vandalism and criminal damage, in part experienced, although not from
n& ^
the proposed development, as recently as last week. Over the years, experience has shown that to immediately obtain the services of an under resourced police force or evidence from CCTV camera footage, have not been possible at least vvith regard to criminal damage. ■ I know that it is possible to control licensed: premises in terms of noise-nuisance, vandalism and criminal damage. Those in my experience relate to examples in London and abroad and also involve cultural considerations. If similar measures can be respectfully and responsibly applied in this case, then hopefully, my present concern and those of my neighbours will be rec
onciled. RICHARD COWMAN,
King Street, . Ciitheroe
Come on, Britain, it’s
hardly rocket science! HAVING lived in Ciitheroe until I was 25,1 wit nessed the problem weekly of drunken yobs and gradually felt unsafer going out to socialise with
friends. I emigrated to Canada and have been here two.
years now and feel safe when out socialising. I am amazed that Canada and the USA have
come up with a simple solution to drunkeness - ID anybody who looks under 30 upon entering a
bar. '
; Nobody minds being asked for ID as they realise that this act alone works to control peo
ple. ‘Why does Ciitheroe think that getting radios
wll help? Surely it would be better to stop the drunkeness before it happens rather than to be in

to think about our famous slogan: “A dog is For Life, Not Just For Christmas”, and that they
' remember it all year round. The early part of the year is often a hard time
■ for dog welfare charities as they are under pres sure to care for the many thousands of unwanted dogs given as presents at Christmas and discard ed when they become a nuisance as the novelty
wears off. • We would also ask that owners make a New Year’s resolution to ensure their new pet has the best start in life and think about booking train- ing classes.
- Organisations such as “Dogs Trust” are the
ones that have to pick up the pieces when last year’s Christmas present becomes this year’s obligation. So please take that time to train your new dog and make sure he stays with you for life,
CLARISSA BALDWIN, Chief Executive Officer, Dogs Trust - A Dog Is For Life.
Good luck as Chris looks
forward to coming home I WAS so pleased to receive a Christmas card from Chris Egan who was jailed in Thailand and his parents requested that people should write to him. He thanks me and everyone else who has been in touch for all the kind words and support. He tells met th a t he is shortly moving to Kirkham Open Prison, and should be safely back home by April 2006. I am sure Chris and his family will be counting the days. Good luck for the future.

IN this week’s super competition we have 10 copies of Claire Sweeney's keep- fit DVD up for grabs. Like many of us, if TV presenter and
actress Claire Sweeney does not keep fit and watch what she eats, she puts on weight fast. That is why she turned to WeightWatchers Online and successfully lost weight. Finding that this programme fitted into
her lifestyle well, Claire then developed a fit ness workout with her trainer in order to help her stay in shape and keep the weight off. It combines two key elements - a highly flexi ble and effective exercise plan with a flexible eating plan developed by the experts at WeightWatchers ' "I’m in the best shape I’ve been in years, thanks to flexibility of Perfect Fit,” says Claire. “I love food and find exercise boring, so I
needed to find something that would fit into my busy lifestyle. Comhining exercise as lit tle as twice a week with the WeightWatchers programme will give you the results you’re after. I lost a stone and dropped a dress size in just five weeks - so can you!" Perfect Fit is the first celebrity interactive
fitness DVD that allows you to choose how much exercise you want to do each day. Whether you want to spend just 10 min
utes or a whole hour. Perfect Fit moulds itself to your schedule. "You can do as much or as little as you
