Mourners pay tribute to sports-loving father
MOURNERS packed Whalley Parish Church to celebrate the life of a sports-loving Wiswell man. Described by his family as a man
who lived life to the full and loved a challenge, Mr Harry Stephenson died suddenly while out jogging - just one of his many hobbies. The father-of-two (pictured) who
was born and bred in Sunderland, left the North East at the age of 16 to become an apprentice with Black burn Rovers. A promising young goalkeeper, he
played at youth and reserve team levels before going on to play for var
ious amateur clubs including Great Harwood and Rossendale. . Staying in Blackburn, Harry
began an electrical apprenticeship with W. H. Smith where he met his friend and future business partner Peter Dawson. The pair set up D. and S. Engineering Facilities, now based a t Clayon-le-Moors, in the early 1980s. While studying, Harry worked
part time at Shadsworth Sports Cen tre where he met his wife, Julie. They married in 1978 and moved
to Oswaldtwistle, then to Clayton-le- Moors before settling in Wiswell just over five years ago with their chil
dren, Scott (21) and Becky (18). After an injury prevented him from continuing to play football, Harry
became a member of Wilpshire Golf
. Club where he played for 19 years. He had a buzz for skiing and 10 years ago developed a passion for cycling. A member of Oakhill Clarion
Cycling Club, Harry took part in challenging races for charity and fun. Recently he took part in the 138 kilometre Cape Argus Pick ‘n’ Pay Cycle Tour in South Africa. Although his passion for Sunder
land Football Club never waivered, he and his wife were season ticket holders a t Blackburn Rovers and he was a long time corporate sponsor of the club.

Weather was fine and mild
%
DECEMBER started with reasonably mild wet weather, which soon changed after the first week when northerly winds lowered daytime temperaures with night time frosts. This cold quiet weather
continued to the end of the third week when a few mild days broke the pat tern. Christmas Eve saw the
return of night frosts with northerly winds reducing temperatures until the coldest night of the 28th when 11 degrees of frost were recorded. There was just a slight recovery at the end of Decmeber. Total rainfall 75 mm = 3
inches (below average). Total rainfall for 2005 -
■43 inches drier than 2004 - 52 inches, similar to 2003 - 41 inches.

MASCOT Mr P in , . from Accrington Superbowl, made a guest appearance at Chatburn • Primary School during the fes tive season. The special visit was aimed
at rewarding hard-working pupils for. their excellent behaviour. For the past few months,
youngsters have been taking part in a “Green Light’’ scheme.' The fun project is part of their on-going incen tive scheme, put to'gether by Accrington superbowl’s sales and marketing manager. Miss Debbie Thomas, and head
teacher Mr Robert Maude. It is to reward children for their outstanding efforts at school together with their excellent behaviour, with a fun prize and trips to the superbowl. Miss Thomas explained:
“Ten-pin bowling is something that appeals to the whole fam ily and acts as a real incentive to the children to try harder at school.” Commenting on the success
of the initiative, Mr Maude, said: ” This is a marvellous way of rewarding our pupils for their excellent behaviour. . '“ We run a ‘Traffic Lights’
behaviour policy in our school. All pupils who have stayed on green for the whole term had a chance to receive a bowling ticket. “As there were so many of
them, the winning names had to be drawn from a bag for the 12 tickets.” “Mr Pin presented the tick
ets and proved very popular. We will do the same next term and all pupils who stay on green will have the chance to receive a free bowling ticket. We look forward to the return of Mr Pin.”
