CLITHEROE FC witnessed it all in 2005. From the depths of the Uni- Bond table and the threat of rele-
Blues see it all! Adrian Capstick’s 2005 Blues’ re\ iew
• gation, to the joys of leading the First Division and enjoying sever- al successful cup runs, the Blues have seen a remarkable turn-, around over the last 12 months. Nothing stood still at Shaw-
bridge for any length of time as yet-again there were several
. changes behind the scenes. Paul Byron started the year at
the helm with a 1-0 defeat at Eastwood Town, in what was only his third game in charge at the
. club. In all he won nine, drew seven ■
■ and lost 15 to stave off relegation. League consolidation had been
the original aim of the 2004-05 season, but as the final game against already-relegated Roces- ter loomed, Clitheroe were drawn in to a relegation battle with Rossendale. In the end, though, Clitheroe
ended their first UniBond season on a high by recording the league’s
• biggest scoreline of the season with a 6-0 home victory over the doomed Staffordshire side and fin ished the season six points above the relegation zone. . However, this was to be the for
mer Bamber Bridge boss’ last game in charge, as having been at the club for less than seven '
months he was forced to leave due to work commitments. The hunt for a new man in June
threw up some familiar names but it came as a pleasant surprise for many when former Prescot Cables chief Tommy Lawson was named as Byron’s successor. He took to the training ground,
with former Witton Albion and Mossley boss Benny Phillips, and the pair set about strengthening the side. As a result a lot of new faces •
have graced Shawbridge since August, as well as some old favourites leaving the side too. Clitheroe’s all-time leading
goalscorer Lee Cryer ended his association with the club to become Lee Sculpher’s assistant at • Ramsbottom United. Stuart Todhunter called time
on his playing career, as the ex professional made the Rocester game his final swansong before retiring from the game. And both Jason Jones and Neil
Spencer moved on to fellow Uni- Bond outfit Bamber Bridge.. The current season started with
a 2-2 draw at home to Brigg Town in August and Clitheroe ended 2005 with a 2-1 win at Bishop Auckland. Lawson’s men won 14, drew six and lost 11 games during that
period, topped the division in October and marched through the
. qualifying stages of the FA Tro-; phy to earn a big money tie
• against Conference North outfit Barrow. ■ They narrowly lost that game,
but it was an influx of several new players that made this possible, with the likes of Tony Evans, Ian Kearney and Tom Hardwick : arriving on loan from Southport, ex-Accrington Stanley forward Gary Williams injecting some much needed trickery on the wing,- and two goalkeepers sharing the duties between the sticks in Andy' Paxton and Peter Collinge. ' - Left-back Simon ■ Garner
returned to Clitheroe from Con-' ference North side Hyde United, ex.-Arsenal and Crewe trainee Adam Birchall arrived in midfield, and both Chris Clark and Brad Clegg moved across from Rossendale. However, going in the opposite
direction were Ryan Parr, who left for Fleetwood Town, and Russell Clark, who left for Rossendale via Colne, only to be replaced by Prescot Cables’ Brian Holmes. In fact just six players remain
from last season - Gary Jackson, Paul Stansfield, Craig Sargeson, Neil Reynolds, Chris Whitting- ham and John Paul Fagan - as
m m : -
players continue to come and go, but Clitheroe have not once been j found to be lacking. / ^ ^ ^
^ ^ ■Phillips made a shock decision
to leave the club back in October to become assistant boss at his old club Witton Albion, and former Goole a s s i s t a n t - ' Mark' Smitheringale stepped in to the breach.
Injuries have hit the locals quite
hard too. Knee injuries seem to be a problem at the moment, as it appears Gary Jackson will not be making’ a return to the side before • next season having damaged liga-' ments, Chris Whittingham is suf fering from a similar condition, . and Neil Reynolds has recently undergone keyhole surgery. So, Clitheroe may be out of the
FA Trophy and have their injury complaints, but there is still plen ty to look fonvard to in 2006. Victory over Burscough in the
Lancashire Co-operatives Chal lenge Trophy tonight would defi nitely be one highlight, as a plum home tie against Accrington Stan- . ley awaits Clitheroe in the third round if they are successful. And although they currently
reside ninth in the UniBond First . Division, victory in their games in hand would soon see them chal lenging again for promotion, and an exciting climax to the season at the opposite end of the table to last year.

. ■
■ following their draw against Craven College Old Boys over the festive break. Following on from .their recent run of results in the
1^ .., league, this .was a much- '■ improved team perform ance from Waddington. - -The locals took-control • of the game from the kick
off, and, as usual, created several good' scoring chances which were not converted. After 20 minutes the ■vis itors scored completely
•against the run of play • when their speedy right wingback outpaced the Waddington defence to place, the ball wide of Leach in the home goal. ■ For the remainder of the
half, both sides had the opportunity to score more: goals, which were denied
■ by both goalkeepers, mak ing good saves., • The second half followed
the same pattern as the first, with Waddington in complete control. Defenders Cane and
Hindle were in superb form, and the Waddington
. midfield players continual ly made chances for both themselves and the for-: - ward players.
, , , ; . Waddington equalised
w i th 20 minutes left when : ■ Dean and Tierney chal- .
lenged the visiting defend ers for a high ball, the ball' fell to the latter, and he' made no mistake.
. In the remainder of the game, Waddington had. several good chances to win the game but failed t o " take any of them, while at ■ the other end, the visitors created a'superb chance to ■win the game in the dying minutes, only to be denied
by a reaction save from Leach. : .Overall this was a good
team performance from
Waddington, with each player showing a level of commitment which has been missing from p’revi-
’ous performances, and this hopefully bodes well for the second half of the sea son.
.Waddington FC would
like to take the opportuni ty to wish all their sup porters and sponsors a;:

New Year setback in dour derby loss
CUlheroe ...........0 Charley .............. ..........1 AS thrilling derby games go this fixture was as far
' removed as it gets. Bank Holiday Mon-,
day’s home game was. poor, and only a weak 58th-minute goal separat ed the two sides in what was a truly forgettable encounter. The first half had start
ed promisingly, with efforts from both Paul Rogers and Tony Evans going close, only to be denied by the Chorley keeper, while Gary ■Williams proved a real threat on the wing. There was no cutting
edge or killer movement, though, nothing worthy of a goal or any sign of the kind of play the Blues have Been capable of in front of goal recently. Chorley passed the ball
around well, but they hadn’t threatened the
Andy Paxton in the sec-y ondhalf.
. . Clitheroe barely had a
shot on target after the break, with only a Paul Rogers shot over the bar
. being of any note. U til ity player Paul
McNally made his debut, coming on for Tony Evans to freshen things up, only to no real effect, as the former Warrington Town player made mini mal difference to the Clitheroe attack. And apart from a „ .
Simon Garner corner forc- ^ ing the Chorley keeper to come off his line, veteran defender and one time Burscough player-manag er Shaun Teale kept Clitheroe in check. • Clitheroe Reserves
